What could be better than mudlarking in the rain?
Taking along an undeniable star of the mudlarking community, one whose videos inspired me to make my own!
In this video, I was mudlarking alongside Nicola White, and although I still haven't got the hang of proper collaborative film making, we had a lot of fun, found lots of cool finds, and got rained on a lot.
Nicola's video from the day is here: • Mudlarking with Nicola...

Makes me nostalgic ! When I was about 14 I saw a bottle in a field near my school and went into the field to look at it and realised that I was surrounded by bottles. I went to the farmer and asked permission and he said 'take all you want, they keep coming up and are a bother' . Over a year I must have collected over 1000 bottles, many were green or blue glass and lots and lots of inkwells and ink bottles. I even found a child's tea pot in one area and the spout in another ! When my parents separated we left the family home and I had to leave sacks and sacks of as yet unwashed finds. I still have some of the coloured bottles and the inkwells somewhere. The field is still there over an old victorian dump. There used to be a huge manor house near the dump but it burnt down leaving only the foundations. I would love to go back and dig around. Thank you, I did see Nic's version of this day out.

That sounds like a fantastic site, and a wonderful collection (I hope whoever ended up with the house, ended up with the bottles too and appreciated them. It's pretty good fun dump digging, I'll have to try and find out who owns a few sites so I can try and get some permissions 🙂 I'm glad you enjoyed this video, and sorry it's taken so long to respond.. Another great video with inspiring content 👍. Gabapentin (I’m sure your aware) is a class 3 scheduled drug and it’s advised not carry without a valid prescription. It’s amazing gesture to have removed it considering how harmful it can be. Great work for us and the environment 🙂.

Yes, I thought I recognised the name as one that's sometimes abused, but I couldn't remember the full details. Anti-convulsive, which gives a pleasant euphoric high when combined with something else I can't quite remember. Probably not hugely toxic when spread out over a river system, but could have killed some wildlife near where it first breaks open. Glad you enjoyed the video and my small efforts to take the harmful things out of the environment. 🙂

Hi Katie, thank you for your comment, and I'm sorry you're unable to get out for similar small adventures. I'm quite lucky to live where I live, most of the areas I go are fairly unrestricted; but the history we have here cannot compare to the many thousands of years of amazing history you have there in Greece. Dear tom burleigh, i found out about your channel through your recent joint venture with pipe extractor extraordinaire nicola white. I find your mudlarking adventures thoroughly enjoyable : pace, tone, nature, history, human demises and animal bits etc. they are like little capsules of contentment with bursts of wonder. You have inspired me to pay a visit to the river which flows very close by : there has been two floods this winter so , to reprise your own words, let's go and see what the river has found. Until the water levels are safe, i will take some time to work out exploration strategies and suitable apparel, not least some no nonsense footwear. Thank you for all your endeavors, i wish you some lovely muddy promenades in the future.

Oh my gaawwwwwwwd!!!!!!! I CANNOT believe the wonderful little lead bits (among many other things) you two found on this day! (I really can't believe you didn't take that seltzer....) I think the small, clear round scent bottle was fixed to a necklace. I also love the contract between the two of you as you react to finding lovely things. Really quite striking. Honestly, I think if you found a diamond-studded gold necklace, you'd say- 'Ah, gold. I think I'll take it home........' then be off to find a bottle or rubber stopper. And honestly too, that's part of your charm. And your 'persona'. Outstanding outing! Thanks for bringing us all along with you.

I know you have little free time, but I’m ever hopeful and patient to wait for you to sell your surplus finds. You've been such a great support to me through the history of this channel, I'd happily share the location with you if you and your sister would both like to go to it. The cliff might not be safe to get to, but the beach is if you don't mind brambles and nettles too much and a km walk from where cars can be parked. I'm glad you found this so enjoyable; and hopefully I can equal that level again for you someday... probably not easy, as the dump site was on top form, and Nicola is a rare visitor (she does want to return though). 🙂

What a treat two of my favourite channels in one ! The little lead frog you found is a Britain's Coco cub , these were a give away with Cadbury coco powder. They were designed by Ernest Aris who illustrated for Beatrix Potter . They were made in 1934 - 39 and there were 32 in the set , you have Freddy frog . The tank figurine is a piece of crestware probably made by Goss , very collectable for a time , lots of great finds thanks for sharing .
