The disinfectant is called Virkon. It's very common in the agriculture industry, like dairies, swine, & poultry farms too. Aquaculture has a specific, fish-safe Virkon formula.

A bachelors of science in Fisheries or other closely related field (biology, environmental science, or animal science) is what you'd want for most opportunities in this field. It can get you from Bioaide to Hatchery Manager. I would absolutely recommend a B.S. in Fisheries. It'll walk you through fish biology, health, management, conservation, and all aspects of Aquaculture. You'd be a high valued employee with better pay and better options 👍 If you're going for bottom tier employment (grunt work, temporary/part time, no benefits or retirement), all you need is a high school diploma. Although this sounds not so great, it's a foot in the door and grunt work is the same across all hatcheries. If you're wanting to work at a commercial or private production hatchery, they are now encouraging you to have at least an associates degree in fisheries. College of Southern Idaho has a 2 year program that is specifically built for working in commercial settings without as much research or science background. There might be others like it popping up in other states that are saturated with commercial hatcheries. I'd encourage you to go as fisheries-specific as you can if you know you want to make a career out of it. Hope this helps! 🙂
