If you tried crossing a road like the people in this video, in modern London, you'd get run over. Such a different world and everyone is wearing proper shoes.

Excellent video. I am from Uruguay, 85, started visiting London in 1961 and further on, thanks to my airline job. Yes, it has much changed over the years, specially the way people dress today. But London is still an ever charming city.

1940's London was WARTIME. Rhe blitx left many building in Central London in ruins. Sirens bombs airraid shelters. rationing of food clothes shoes even soap. Black out curtains I think you must all be thinking of sometime Post War. 1950's. I went to London in 1947.

From personal memory, there were still bombsites lying derelict behind wooden hoardings, in Central London into the mid 1960s. Where Centre Point now stands being one such location.

Surprises me how much traffic was around, I was living and driving around there in the early 50s, parking in the west end no problem.

Just to point out a couple of things as there seems to be a surfeit of nostalgia here. The roads wren't safer then - road casualties during the war and for years after were far higher than now. Shots of the center of London are not going to show the poverty that was wide spread at this time and would persist through the 50s. Outside of London you would find people would have shabby and patched clothes as these were rationed. Also baths were seen as a luxury and people smelt - plus we don't have the NHS at this point so illness among the poor would often go untreated. Looting and crime was a problem in poorer areas. I'm not saying this to attack the generation who made such sacrifices but to question people who think they would rather live then.

The "blackout" white line markings on kerbs, lamp posts, traffic lights and round the bottom of the lower panels on the trams are a dead giveaway. Ditto blackout coverings on road vehicle headlamps. Blackout restrictions were lifted 30th April 1945 There's one shot of an NS bus (open top and no windscreen) which looks pre-war. AFAIK, none of these ex-General buses ran in regular service after 1936/7, but the number of 'austerity' wooden bus bodies indicate wartime (or VERY shortly afterwards). Ditto the number of 'forces' registered vehicles.

Are people seriously looking back at the 1940's thinking we could go back to those times? London was a bomb site, rationing was in force, crime was at it's highest. Most commonly robbing corpses in bombed out buildings. Criminal gangs ruled the West End. Most of the city was a slum.
