Thanks for your quiet and thoughtful approach. As a retired American I've lived full time in Laureles since 2016 and only one time has anyone given me a hostile look for what I presumed to be my obvious typical gringo appearance. You could say that 99.9% of the time Colombians have been welcoming and cordial to me. I'm not here for intimacy with strangers, marijuana or cocaine and the neighbors here can sense that.

Such a wonderful, thoughtful video Dan! I was in Medellin in the 90s and it was quite dangerous. I know it has changed a lot. This is a wonderful area to walk and think and explore. Huge appreciation as always!! 🙂

Hello, nice video. As a native of Medellin, I can tell you there are 2 other nice neighborhoods, Conquistadores (just adjacent to Laureles, towards the river) and Calasanz. Also some parts of Envigado are quiet, green and walkable.

Laureles has beautiful tree canopies lining the streets that purify and cool air, shield UVA and most often hide the ever-present dangling black array of above ground hydro and internet cables. Surprised you never mentioned the amazing variety of decorative tile and stone work for sidewalks. Unlike in North America (or at least Canada) where sidewalks are cement and owned by city, here they must be owned by property owners. Why else spend so much on this beauty? Flowers and shrubs/trees on either side of sidewalks are gorgeous, too.

Hi Dan, Medellín is experiencing higher temperature than the usual these days for a climate phenomenon called "El Niño". Medellín is pretty green, lots of neighborhoods have those same beautiful trees and gardens you just saw in Laurels. Comuna 13 isn't a "good example" of a typical Medellín neighborhood. Great video! Good to see that you're enjoying your stay.

Excellent video/walking tour of an excellent part of Medellin. My favorite without a doubt. Hope to be back there soon. I just hope that the unseasonably hot temperatures will be gone. You comments are also excellent and relevant. This tour of Laureles is the best one I have watched and I’ve watched a lot of them as well as have been there myself many times. Thanks!

Hi Dan, great videos as always! Not too long ago my partner and I also came to Medellin - and staying in El Poblado definitely felt like a mistake after watching this. We didn't vibe with that neighborhood and its super party/westernification vibe (especially also being from MTL and valuing more comfortable streets). Watching your videos has made me excited to return to Medellin and experience it in a better way!

I love Laureles! During my last visit to Medellin (Aug. 2022) I stayed in Laureles. You can keep El Poblado. Laureles is the neighborhood in Medellin for me. It is a bit pricey compared with other places in Colombia. My Airbnb was the most expensive I've ever rented in Colombia (and I've rented quite a few). But worth it to be in a perfect location, a beautiful area with lots of great places to eat and lots of nightlife, though I don't really do that anymore. I'd like to put a plug in for Medellin's second airport Olaya Herrera (EOH). Unlike Medellin's large, international airport, located outside the city, this quaint airport is just a 10-minute drive from Laureles and downtown. The catch is that it's only domestic flights. But, if you're traveling to several cities in Colombia, flights to/from EOH are definitely worth checking out. They fly to almost any Colombian city you can think of. Your last few videos have really put me in the mood for returning to Colombia, which will be soon!

Would you say this area is safe for a mother and baby?
@josephpanzarella1417
@josephpanzarella1417 3 ай бұрын
@@Chiiirp3 That's difficult to answer. If you have a baby you have an enormous responsibility. As a rule, people with young babies do very little international travel.

Laureles is pricey because is getting dollarized, most of the places for rent are becoming Airbnb, most locals can't afford Laureles anymore, but hey, glad you enjoyed it.

I may just do a solo trip there in December. I hope it doesn't feel intimidating. Side note... Laureles kind of reminds me of Roma Norte

Dude, do some research on Laureles rent prices. You ballparked way too low. Try $1500 US for any remodeled 2B2B.

I walk all over Laureles in the day. Perfectly safe. Be stupid and show flashy wealth, party and walk at night etc, then yes, of course you’ll be a target.

Hello from Seattle - 😅. Question, so you would not live in Laureles because is noisy and also poblado is pretty loud. So which barrio or neighborhood would you rather live? Any nice beautiful neighborhoods like laureles but less noisy?

Super clean streets = low paid cleaning jobs and poor or no social security. You have the same in Europe in countries like Romania or Spain.
@frank4687
@frank4687 3 ай бұрын
False, the personnel in charge of cleaning in these neighborhoods are part of the state company called EEVV. Any public or private company in Colombia must pay its workers, by law, at least a minimum wage in addition to all the corresponding legal benefits: Health, Pension, etc.
@bidufree
@bidufree 3 ай бұрын
@@frank4687 It's not false. These workers get poor or no social security compared to countries with good social security. Middle and upper class pay additional fees for a better safety net. The streets get super clean because of low costs.
