Lost In Transit

2 жыл бұрын

The midnight sun took it's toll on us and for the first time in a month we didn't feel like picking up the camera. We can see why there's so much hype around these majestic islands! I can't believe they built a football pitch here!
We've driven all the way from the UK to Norway in our trusty old ford transit van!
NEW VIDEO EVERY DAY AT 5PM UK TIME. Welcome to the daily vlog series! We are attempting our biggest ever challenge on KZfaq; creating a daily video whilst we travel from the UK all the way to Estonia for six whole weeks (42 days). This is day 31 of our daily van life vlogs on the road, come join us as we travel into the unknown!

Who are we? 💁🏼‍♀️
We're Tom and Iz, who live and travel in our van La Bamba. We love nature and are currently traveling in Norway!!
You might find Tom in the forest IDing a mushroom, fixing something or starting an ambitious project with his laid-back relaxed approach whereas you could find Isabel cooking up a storm, sunning herself on a beach and being a busy, energetic bee with her endless enthusiasm and positivity! We are total opposites but it works!
How did we end up here?! 😁 ⏮
We met 10 years ago when we were both finishing our A-levels and had a whirlwind summer romance, hitch-hiking around France together before before going our separate ways to travel and to university. We've both always prioritised travel and adventure and have worked hard over the years in hospitality jobs to enable us to keep exploring.
Tom hitch-hiked across Europe and road tripped around Australia whilst Iz studied Environmental Science at York. Iz backpacked around South America with her sister whilst Tom studied Forestry at Aberdeen University. Little did we know we just weren't going to get each other out of our minds! Fast forward 4 years later, we found ourselves in campsite warden jobs, living in a bell tent in a wild flower meadow together! Maybe without realising this was the start of our van life journey!
Next, we both trained to be science teachers and during training, we bought a van, ripped out it's interior and converted it to live in it. Iz managed to get a remote work-from-home job that she could do from the van and Tom was passionate about starting up a KZfaq channel.
Since then we haven't looked back and when the pandemic allowed us to, we travelled to Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and around Cornwall. We are now on a big European road trip! We are giving it our best shot to do KZfaq full time. We have a dream of one day owning a little plot of land and building ourselves a cabin in the woods. If you're new around here you can check out our previous videos; we've been uploading weekly videos for the last 9 months and are currently releasing DAILY VIDEOS.
Our message on our channel is to inspire others to do what they love as life is too short! We love living simply, freely with less stuff but more time!
Thank you so much for watching! If you enjoyed this video please consider LIKING this video and SUBSCRIBING to our channel! It would help us grow our channel 🌻

I've visited that Viking longhouse. Definitely worth visiting. Drying cod doesn't stink. It smells of MONEY! Fun fact; Italy paid for their debt(from buying dried cod) before WWII with a couple of bombers. (Several Caproni 310, and a Breda 28 as a trainer.) Worst deal ever... Brazil... Know two things about Norway. 1. We always beat them in Soccer... which they forgive us for because... 2. We sell them drived cod which they need to make Bacalao.

Not sure where your route goes later, but if you're driving back down through Norway there's a great lighthouse called Tranøy fyr right across the fjord from Lofoten. Hamarøy and Steigen are what's across the fjord from Lofoten and honestly very underrated!

Incredible I will see Lofoten next time I really should had gone, next time I will take the car/van and stay there for a week t 10 days for sure, my friends moved from Bergen and now lives there, I remember when I was vegan in 2020 I though the giant Avacados were relatively the same price as the UK around £1.50 for a giant avacado, some things are comparable, tins of bonners / beans 70p a tin I loved the dry crispbreads they were cheap also 90p a pack, and barmix a mix of nuts peanotters, and savory snacks, and I think they had soya or vege mince alternatives, and tinned tomatoes were as cheap as the UK, but vegan alternatives are costly, but there were hardly any Vegan alternatives back then I could find, (I eat fish now, so I will be spoilt for choice in Norway next time) I did however fall in love with a vegan restaurant in Bergen we went to a few times the contrast of Organic fresh veg and salad and fruit in a huge bowl with zesty flavours

So pleased that you went to Henningsvær 👍 For a landscape-photography nerd like me it's a really famous location, especially because of the football pitch (by the way, is it astroturf or real grass) but I never thought the whole place would be whiffy with drying cod! Sadly you didn't go to Røst... You mentioned the italian merchant. His name was Pietro Querini and his ship got into a storm on the way to the netherlands, and lost rudder and sails. So for over a month they were drifting till they hit a reef outside Røst. They got into their light boats and found an island where there were some small shelters for sheeps. This was in the middle of the winter, so the sheds, which were made for sheeps, was empty. One of the young men did by chance deicide to take a trip out to see. Why? Not sure since my memory of the story isn't the best... But heard he had a "feeling" of something was wrong. He found the men and got some one the main island to go out after the rest. Some on the islands are remarkably dark in the skin, so some believe that some of the sailors did leave a mark on the island. In more than one way. As you mentioned: this opened up for trade of stockfish to italy. My brother is now working in Italy. Years back he did make "stockfish from Lofoten" a trademark. On the same level as lets say cognac and champagne. Since you both seems to be very "spiritual". Here is a song by the group Heilung. To describe the music, "amplified history" covers the most! Enjoy! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibySlsJ33MjYZWQ.html

Well, from Narvik toTalinn you can make it in 3 days, so still lets to visit to see on the Lofoten and Vesteralen or you decide to come back one day. I am sure you know the heads of the cod get sold to Africa. During the cod fish season from Jan-April the kids on the Lofoten earn a lot of money by cutting off the tongue of the cods. Its a delicatesse, same as the cod cheeks. Enjoy further more your time on the Lofoten.

Love this look into Lofoten, whose very name just makes me and everyone I know go "oh yeh, the fish place" :p Since I just jumped into your vlogs from the start of your Norway journey - How is it keeping a vegan lifestyle on the move like this? I'm admittedly pretty uninformed about the eating habits, but what little I do know was that it's a struggle meeting all the nutritional values the body needs without meat or dairy, and frankly.. Norway isn't great on vegan options. we're getting there, but it's slim pickings still and just as, if not more, expensive..

Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!

Lofoten is stunning but seriously under strain by the sheer number of tourists now visiting. If you really appreciate the beauty of Norway, perhaps driving the length of the country in a diesel van isn't the best way to show it. Driving home isn't going to be cheap either with current fuel prices around 27 NOK per litre..
