well i'm sure they don't want to record the entirety of them working. that would be boring but it would also bother her co-workers, i'm sure. just an FYI, we don't normally code all day. that leads to burnout, fast. most of the day, at my office anyway, is spent in meetings. coding is important, but if everyone isn't on the same page, that pretty much makes your work pointless.

That's because unlike this fluke in the video - you're a real software engineer. The shit she produces, is given later to you to debug. You take one look at her 3 lines of code and comment out the entire thing before re-writing. That's the reality.

Many times it is essential to walk away and reset our brains to find an error. Additionally developers are constantly think about their code and what's coming down the pipeline, from the moment our eyes open until they close.

Maybe its a biased notion, because on those videos people don`t keep filming themselves while looking at a screen (work part/boring video). Instead, the takes of breaks and other activities are more interesting to watch... but still, I think I take less breaks then people on these videos too.

That's about all they can show you. This is an actual company she works at with proprietary code. There's no way they'd be okay with her filming her screen while working. And if you look closely at the times, most of those 'breaks' look like they last less than 15 minutes.

I appreciate this is a honest day to day video. I used to be in product design as a manager and although most days were made up of briefings and meetings, the structure and content was both similar but different all the same. These days I'm a D&C manager and its about 20 different meetings a week but I'm also out and about physically interacting, mentoring, helping my engineers where I can. I mentally couldn't be a software engineer anymore, I'm too fidgety and need too much stimulus but that's probably because life changes when you have kids

I really like this video. Yes, Luba does not shows you the actual work she doing in the computer because, like many companies, Airbnb has to keep that private. But anyone who is paying attention to the video close enough can see that she worked at least 8 hours or more. And she got to her office at 8am and left after 6pm, that's 10 hours in one place. And she does what a regular software developer does..She checks her emails and her tasks to know what needs to be done, she block her time to do code, she has the usual meetings that companies have and she does her service design at the end. This is a nice video.

Is 'code monkeys' supposed to be a sneering term for those people who are bright enough to be able to program? In any case, whoever it was who designed their site was inept: it would be extremely hard to create anything less functional. To be honest, I can't see much evidence of any coding expertise at Airbnb. However, you are right: as in most companies with too much money and thick senior managers, the IT department at Airbnb is obviously an environment where nobody is pushed to do anything constructive. A competent full-stack developer could do the work of that entire room of people, and do it much better.

This new "startup" culture is about having quite some free time from these breaks , but at the same time you get to work all day.

This video is a nice commercial for promoting AI to write code. It shows how horribly inefficient and costly humans are to maintain and get any actual work out of them. This precisely is why we will all be (and rightfully so) replaced by robots and AI.
@brinckau

Robots will make things but who will buy those things if nobody has a job anymore? That would imply making things to use them, not to sell them. But we could already do that, we don't need to wait until nobody has a job anymore. We wouldn't even need to produce useless things anymore, we wouldn't need marketing anymore, etc. So much less work to do, in the end.

Omg guys. Pls just look at the time🙄. Yes, the video is 90% eating. But if you take a look at the time it is 1.5 hours programming, 10 minutes break/eating and another 2 hours coding. The reason that she's showing us the breaks is because coding isn't that exciting to watch for others. Especially when you can't show code... So what do you want to see? A timelap where someone is sitting in front of the computer all day long or some breaks?

@@smoothemoveexlax yeah, no problem. This job environment is a pretty lie, but a lie nonetheless. It is a well thought designed space to misguide talent into an apparent paradise. This girl is just seeking for approval so she can rest assured that she is living a dream. But deep inside, we all know this is a lie, and she knows It as well. Just as she's about to sleep, she remembers about those damn cold spaghettis, or that one coworker that pisses her off during coffee time, or even those dogs that seem happier than what she has been throught during the last three weeks. In fact, I wouldn't even be surprised if she left this "wonderful" job.

In reality our industry is not like this. 99% of people will get up at 7am, be at work by 8:30 (assuming an average 9am start), work solidly till mid day, get a 45 minute lunch break, work solidly till 5:30pm, spend an hour commuting, eat something quick because your brain is frazzled, then watch netflix before falling asleep to do it all over again.
