Follow a typical day in the life of an architect. Part architecture vlog, part behind-the-scenes look at some of the tasks architects work on each day: from designing a set of elevations to managing projects in construction, to writing specifications, to managing an office, and how to deal with the inevitable creative blocks creatives face on a daily basis.
I intentionally structure my day to be divided between making in the morning and managing in the afternoons, with a mid-day transition break for exercise. Learn why this works for me and follow along as I work through some of the most common struggles an architect faces in daily professional practice.
For aspiring architects, architecture students, and those curious about exactly what it is that architects do each day.
In future vlogs I hope to be able to show more of the construction coordination and dialogue that happens outside of the studio as this is where so many decisions are made.

Sad thing these days young architects jumping straight into digital realm, forgoing sketching. Trying to think out of the box while using the box to do thinking. I know that's old talk, but well... Keep at it! Hope this will aspire more budding architects.

You don't NEED to be good at drawing. Most plans are done on the computer. Proficiency in artistic drawing is just an extra that can make you have higher marks in artistic classes at university, but there are very few of those. Regardless, it is always good to study artistic shadows etc for renders, as you will need to make them. Even if the computer does rendering for you, it still needs a human eye to correct/personalize details. But there is a difference with knowing how to draw and how to color. Because of time, you will mostly hand in digital drawings to your client too. For math difficulty you can ask what subjects will the course cover and fully learn them in your holidays/prior taking the course (to take the time you need to understand them). Ps: you can always improve in any area you want if you put the time and effort into it!

i’m on my second year of architecture and this video was extremely motivational yet intimidating at the same time. even though i know i’m only 18 and i still have an extremely long path ahead of me, the fear of not being able to get to this level always haunts me. i have the feeling there’s so much i don’t know (in terms of structures, softwares, technical details, materials etc) and i’m always afraid i won’t learn it all “in time” or whatever. but this very same intimidation i feel is what keeps me going. i really want to become the best architect i could possibly be and your channel has been an amazing motivation. thank you so much for the content and hugs from Brazil.

@Svendar
@Svendar 5 жыл бұрын
Cantrelatesister if you want to specialize in classical architecture, it’s required to be good at drawing, but if you want to do modern architecture, drawing tringles, squares and rectangles will do the job.
@MyCookielittleCat
@MyCookielittleCat 5 жыл бұрын
Well also it is important to draw but in the course of studying architecture most of the time you ALSO get to develop the drawing skill, maybe from REALLY basic to moderate or moderate to excellent, it's all practice, you can also have the gift of already being good at it but also by practicing and really trying is great, if you don't really want to do it you might find it too boring or annoying, but don't get discouraged just because you're not a pro already! Also may I suggest civil engineer? If you like calculus and numbers it's kind of in the field of house/building making

Just take drawing classes. It’s easier than t looks once you understand the foundational concepts you’ll realize your dreams. I am also on your path, I haven’t gotten accepted into my dream school but hope to do so by improving my art skills. Goodluck! And pray to god we realize our dreams ♥️

Svendar i can tell you are not an architecture student or an architect, just by your answer. Specialize in classical architecture ? Do not give people bad advice if you dont know what you are talking.You take drawing lessons, that’s it. I started mine when i was in 11th grade. If you work really hard, 2 years its enough to learn the basics and get you into the school you want. You will then learn everything you need regarding designing a home in the next 6 years of school. Oh and, things like drawing and understanding perspective are critical if you want to be a good architect. Trust me, drawing rectangles and triangles will not “do the job”.
@MyAura
@MyAura 5 жыл бұрын
You dont need to draw like Da Vinci to become an architect. As long as you know how to draw perspectives and scale of objects, youll be fine. Also, theres computer softwares such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds max, rhino etc. To help you with modeling and drawing.

Your life mirrors my own except you are a much better and more thorough architect. I work from my home that I designed in 2003 and built over a period of a couple of years. Moved in in 2006. I work mainly on residential projects in a rural area. I like to get out to. mostly on the bike. Great vid. I especially relate to the hassle and distraction of emails, texts, etc. We need solitude and quite to create and that can also isolate us. You are definitely not alone. Love this video. I've been at an impasse over the last 2 years. Struggling to decide if I should pursue an architecture career for myself. I know on a deep down level that it would be a great fit for me and I believe I have all of the personality traits and the work ethic necessary to be good at it, but I've had so many people discourage me from it. I've also done some research and found that it can be a very hard field to break in to. And I've heard first hand stories of people regretting going to school for it. But my heart is still telling me to give it a try. The logical side of my brain thinks it's most likely a huge risk. Anyway, sorry to be that weird anonymous person that spills there guts on the internet to strangers, but just wanted to thank you for making these videos, they're great insight and might help me along in the process of deciding what to do. Geez life choices. Lol

I've been Designing for 34 years and I'm still learning, so ! With Architecture you don't go to Varsity, Graduate and you know everything, when you graduate you will find out that you actually know nothing, it comes with experience and TIME. It's ART, and you are forever evolving, learning new programs, new techniques, new styles, you have to be a people's person, you deal with the deepest being of total strangers. You get quite intimate with your clients, because you are designing their living space, where they are going to live, sleep, eat, etc. I am 90% of the time friend with my clients after designing their homes, you create a bond during designing their dreams. BUT ! it's not all glamorous, there's lots and lots of paper work involved, red tape, laws , bylaws to deal with, which does not always go the way you want it to go. Frustration, when you've spent hours and days, to design specific details, and the contractor will mess it up in half an hour flat, or the client will decide the feature is too expensive and omits it.

Awesome idea I love watching this type of videos and I enjoy architectural content as well, I wanted to be an architect when I was younger I really enjoyed designing houses and sketching just for fun but I thought that it will not make me enough money for living so I didn't continue and started programming later on I started logo design and now I am trying to get my work on Behance and all social media and I want to start working on clients work but I think it takes time. I still do enjoy your videos a lot keep up ;)

This video was calming but also stressful for a 15 year old wanting to take on engineering or architecture. I am good at maths and drawing but I feel I’d struggle for time management. How do you find time to do little tasks you set yourself without becoming distracted or not doing anything? I love the life he lives and I strive to become as advanced as he is and have as much motivation as him. Thank you for this inspirational video! 🙌

Best advice I have is to not compare yourself to a professional with 26 years in practice. I have many years of school (5 yrs) + training (5 years of internship) and then passing licensing exams and years studying under others until I opened the practice you see in the video. This only comes from investing the time to learn, practice, and fail; repeatedly. Don't let the challenge of it deter you, instead let the possibility of it inspire you to action. Good luck!

@Oddwolf799 lop Which is great if you want to be a mechanic. I had 2 when I was 17 also, a toyota corolla and a datsun B210. I never put either on the road but sold the Toyota for 2.5 times what I paid for it after the muffler rusted off and gave the other to my younger brother for $100. You had to leave the block heater plugged in during summer and push start it down the lane, max compression 75 psi and no idle.
