On my trip to LA this past month, I had the opportunity to check out the Sling 2 LSA (Light sport Aircraft) in torrance. For those of you who are not familiar with this airplane, it’s the LSA version 2 seater airplane from the guys at Airplanefactory. I reviewed the four seater a while ago, video link here • A Day In The Sling 4 -...
Today we look at the Sling 2 LSA. The first thing that stands out to me is the design, both exterior and interior. Just like the sling 4, you have a very spacious cabin in this airplane and the sling 2 also comes with an electronically controlled prop which makes life easier on the pilot. Enough room in the cabin to fit 2 adults nicely. The cabin width is 44 inches and the Sling has a useful load of 500 pounds.
A nice feature in the Sling 2 is the sliding canopy for those hot summer days and also sliding seats. I’m about 5 feet 10 inches tall and I’m able to sit in this airplane comfortably. Now for someone a bit taller or someone over 6 feet tall, you can easily use the seat lever and push the seat backwards for more leg room.
Several options you have in the sling 2 includes a glass panel. You can opt for MGL, Dynon, or Garmin. The airplane reviewed in this video already comes equipped with the Garmin G3X touch. A superb avionics system that can be used for both VFR and IFR Flying.
Below are some of the basic specs on the sling 2:
Cruise speed = 120 knots
useful load = 500 pounds
climb rate = 900 feet per minute
engine = rotax 912 100HP or rotax 914 115HP
kit price = $83,000
used price = $125,000
New price = $155,000

My dad is a little older and is moving to light sport. I'm just getting to the point where I'm ready to start my pilot training, so the Sling 2 and the RV-12is are both on the radar. Thank you for putting these out. You're an amazing ambassador for aviation. Thank you!

Great overview. I learned to fly in a Sling 2, they are awesome, 2 of them that I have flown have the toe brakes. 2 of them hand brakes... I love them with the Garmin G3X, a big improvement over the MGL.

Hi Mike, I have been loving your videos. I believe you made a small mistake in this video. The Sling 2 can be built as either LSA or experimental. If it is built as experimental, it is allowed to go faster and allowed more weight. Keep making the great videos.

Is the Rotax the only engine option? I like the airplane a lot but would prefer an UL power engine option but I’m not sure if they offer forward kit for other engine options.
@kevinbutler9786
@kevinbutler9786 5 жыл бұрын
Rotax is the only engine option for the sling kit. However, if you don't care about the LSA cert and go homebuilt experimental, you could put whatever you want in it I think. But I fly a sling 2 with the rotax 912is and I don't know why you would want a dinosaur lycoming or continental in it. I have full EFI, no choke, no mixture control, it starts beautifully every time. Just my 2 cents anyways.

Great vid. How does the maneuverability compare to the ctls? Is it more agile or does it have the sporty look but same ability as a ctls? What I'm trying to get at, are all these lsa's the same performance wise? Thanks for the great vids, just subbed a couple days ago.

Having flown a 2006 CTLS before, I would say that the Sling is sportier and has better maneuverability.

I have flown both, the CTLS for 1 year and the Sling 2 for about 6 months. The Sling 2 is a more forgiving plane for sure, and this has to do with landings. On the Sling, you can do a normal round out and flare, and the plane will gently settle. It is also very easy to slow down with the large flaps. On the CT you need to really plan ahead or you can't slow down, with flatter approaches etc. (or you can slip). You also need to fly it right to the ground since it tends to plummet if you flare high. The Sling will just settle onto the runway. You can master the CT and it's a blast to fly, but it's just a totally different feel. You need to try both. The CT is much easier to get in and out of and has a very "solid" well built feel. Both are super maneuverable in the air and very agile.

What 'The Voice Of An Angel' said. in eco mode you can get the fuel burn down to 3.8 GPH. And yes ballistic parachute is available. I actually think it's standard with the kit but I could be wrong.

Hey Mike. Did you ask them about putting a 915 in Sling 2? If built as an EAB with the higher gross weight, I was wandering if that might be an option for us that can only go 2 place. I know the 914 is an option, but I would rather go to the 915 if I could. The 915 is really nice. I wish I could go TSI, but it is probably well out of reach for me.
@mojogrip
@mojogrip 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Keith, currently you can't. Would be too heavy for the frame of the Sling 2.

Is this due to the fact that it is a high wing vs a low wing? Are low wings more maneuverable?
@mojogrip
@mojogrip 5 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily but Low wings do always give you that sporty feel at least from an aesthetic view point. But all airplanes are built differently. As per the CTLS that I flew it was an older model and it felt a bit flimsy compared to the regular DA40 I was flying at the time

Yes, they can. Its just a turn to the right/left. Any aircraft can do that.
