But before your jump to conclusions and judge our ancestors for their brutalism you need to know that Romania (well, the 3 Romanian countries before they become one: Wallachia, Moldavia and Transilvania) have been under the Ottoman empire's vassalage for 500 years, and during those times the Ottomans were constantly kidnapping our kids, or taking them "for education" (read "indoctrination and assimilation") purposes back to Constantinople (current Turkey's capital, Instanbul), and Vlad the Impaler had just been one of those kids legally stolen from his parents to be "educated" at Constantinople, and that's where he first saw the impalement method. I wish I could link you to the source of my statement but I've learned this decades ago (actually I don't think I've learned it on the internet, but possibly in school, I don't remember but it's true) so I don't have / remember the source. Upon his return to Romania Vlad had become ruler and had to do something about the insanely high theft and criminality rates ruling these lands and back then these criminals never answered to anyone, never had anything to be afraid of, so Vlad - seeing how effective (brutal, yes, but effective) this method had been in Constantinople - went along with it in order to rid the country of all those wrongdoers. And he's succeeded. In less than 2 years word goes that you could leave a golden chalice imprinted with rubies on a bench outside and nobody would touch it for fear of getting impaled. That's one effective way of curing maladies like stealing if you asked me :)

Not at all. The guy was considered absolutely crazy even for that time standards. A lot of people killed by impaling or boiling in the water, most of them only because the idiot didn't like them. I know that our romanian history sounds very romantic, we are always the good guys and all, but checking facts we find out that most of these are only lies.

We didn’t have a car, so the tour was really the only option. We liked that we didn’t have to worry about transport, and we were able to see both castles and explore Brasov. But definitely doable solo if you have a car!
