A Day of Lobstering From Tenant's Harbor Maine

The wife and I spent the day on the lobster boat "Long Tail Duck" Captained by Victor Cole and his crew Mike and Bruce. We left Tenant's Harbor for a day of hauling over 400 traps. Check out our video and learn a little about how these lobsters get to your table.

Really glad to see Maine has such strong conservation measures in place. Lobstered out of Montauk Long Island in the 80's and New York state really dropped the ball on protecting the lobster population. Especially love that Maine lobstermen V notch the females so they can't be harvested, incredibly smart to insure healthy generations down the line. Really enjoyed the video!

Next time you go down to the Miller wharf talk with Dan he is a smart fisherman, great fella. I loved this video I earned my sea legs at that wharf, Dan taught me how to Stern.

Ive fished all over these areas I grew up in cushing and friendship fished there for years. Fished a few islands and now currently I'm fishing on ilseboro.. great vid brother stay safe

I do not eat any type of sea food. this doesn't mean I don't like watching the videos. I find it interesting to see how they are caught. Enjoyed this one. knowledge is key to everything. Thanks to all for the video.

The wife just bought two 1lb lobsters for $10 apiece in Oklahoma, which led me to wonder why lobsters are so cheap. Are the Maine lobstermen doing ok? Are they making a decent wage? Is there an over fishing, etc? Ive found out 2 things in the last 2 days: Lobstermen are REALLY the backbone behind conservation, meaning there are good lobster numbers because of self regulation (mostly through size limits and designed trap ineffeciencies). And 2, the buyers are becoming "Walmart" type corporations. Super buyers that are doing all the buying and in general keeping the fisherman from getting their fair share. The reason for the low price is the success the fishermen have had in the past 20 years at sustaining the lobsters, and they are therefore plentiful this year.

Btw, the lobsters I purchased were through Aldi.

Thanks for viewing and commenting. The going boat rate for lobster is around $4.00 per pound. I think most Maine lobsterman are doing pretty well. It is a really hard way to make a living with early mornings, long days and a tough working environment. They certainly earn every dollar. I won’t pretend to have a deep knowledge of the industry, Most of what I know is second hand from friends in the business. We learned a lot from our day trip with Victor and crew and there was a lot more rules than I ever thought. Far more lobsters went back into the water than they were able to keep. The size limit and the fact they cannot keep any lobster with eggs caused many lobsters to be returned to the bay to keep the population healthy!
