these guys certainly rehearsed like champions. rehearsal etiquette, performance/overall attitudes, everything. pretty surreal that a high school put out this show.

Man I wish my school had the same level of exposure as Tarpon. Like our drum line plays and looks just as good, if not better in some instances, but doesn't receive an recognition just because our band doesn't put in the same level of dedication and effort as the battery. And on top of that, our band director refuses to field an indoor percussion program, just because it wouldn't service the wind players during the winter, YET WE HAVE FOUR WINTER GAURD PROGRAMS. Man marching band can be frustrating.

Cameron Leonard Honestly if you record your Drumline and put it on the Internet you can get recognition! Post fire clips on Instagram and hit relevant hashtags and you will start to get a following. The community is always looking out for great lines, you just have to put yourself out there! 👊🏽🔥

So sick! especially basses at 7:45, hand to hand splits can be tricky! Side note: It's pretty awesome to have videos like this to showcase the percussion section's talent and dedication. It's also a great way for the students and the instructors to use for self-evaluation. Like at 7:45, Bass 2's playing position is above center but once adjusted to center it causes his forearm to fall below 90 degrees which could be fixed by raising the drum a little more. When bass 2 does play he hits the drum below center. This could be an easy fix for bass 2 if he spent some quality time in front of a mirror to review his sticks trajectory. All of these could have easily been missed by the instructor due to his viewing angle (eye level compared to camera view above) or the speed/duration of the lick which could have caused him to miss crucial instructional information. That's why I think reviewing rehearsal/show videos can be beneficial to all parties involved. This is by no means a stab at the instructor. He clearly is a very knowledgeable individual who knows what he is doing and quite possibly addressed these issues later on. This info may not be new to everyone but I just wanted to share something that I personally found helpful to other present/future educators that come across this video. anyways....these kids are crazy good and I should probably get off youtube and go practice now.

Hey Ricardo! Thanks for the feedback! Remember that this was shot with a wide angle lens, so angles of straight lines will be slightly distorted. This is also something that was addressed every day all season and was something that we continued to work towards until the last performance. Parallel forearms, wrist angle, elbow position, angle of the stick, rotation of the stick/mechanics, mallet placement in the hand, body posture, drum placement in relationship to the body, are things addressed every rehearsal. All of the drums were set to the correct height for each individual performer at the beginning of the season and sometimes were even adjusted if the student grew over the semester. With younger students, sometimes the retention level doesn't move as fast as the expectation, but this group of students worked very hard and did their best at every rehearsal. With that being said, you are 100% right! There is always more to learn and watching videos like this is a great way to not only critique the students, but critique yourself as an educator as well! This happens to be one moment captured in time, but I do these head cam videos all season and watch them to critique my own teaching. I do make videos for the students to critique themselves, and I also make judge tapes during rehearsal run-throughs, but many of these videos I make for myself to strengthen the way I communicate information to my students. Because we are all students on the field! Thanks so much for your kind words! Always working to improve at everything I do! Have a great day dude! Sincerely, Mark Perrett Battery Coordinator, Tarpon Springs HS

Dude I wanna be in this drumline. The energy level is high and I love it. This past year we played Caged by Frank Sullivan and we would strive to play at your level. This year we will be playing Pandora's Box and will try out for State. You guys are hands down the best band I've ever watched. Love, a Bass 3 from a border town in Texas ;)

How did you guys manage to put lights on your drums? What all did you need? Is there like a receiver for all of them?
@gridbooknation
@gridbooknation 6 жыл бұрын
It was a science project for sure! We had battery packs strapped to the drums with RGB switches. Each switch combination created a different color from the LED light switch. The performers had to switch the lights manually which was a challenge to line up together and go in and out of musical performance. The light company we purchased from is no longer around and a lot of it was re-wired by band parents. Maybe check out the Western Carolina University drumline in 2012 and see if they have any light specs!! Sorry, wish we could be more help! TheGridBookSeries what do you mean by "full battery"?
@Inspadave
@Inspadave 7 жыл бұрын
There was a year prior to the one featured in this video when they marched only a snare line. A full battery would include tenors and basses (and sometimes cymbals).

What does it mean when it said this was the first year they had a full drumline on the field?
@gridbooknation
@gridbooknation 7 жыл бұрын
2014 was the first year Tarpon Springs High School Band had a full battery on the field including Snare Drums, Tenor Drums, and Bass Drums. Before that it was a snare line only (2011-2013) and before that there was no marching percussion element on the field. Mark Perrett (Co-Author of The Grid Book Series) became Battery Coordinator in 2013. This footage is from Mark Perrett's Head Camera during BOA Finals Week rehearsal in 2014.
