A captivating video to ensnare your senses. This Adze was given to me "FREE" just when I was looking for one. The head was completely rusted over but electrolysis revealed the makers stamp in perfect condition.
I made a conscious decision to leave the mushroomed head alone. Call me weird but I quite like it because it is part of the tool's history and if I ground it back then I would have also lost that beautiful black patina in that area and would have had to turn the whole thing silver.
The original handle was cracked but fortunately I was able to use that as a template to make an exact copy. The best timber I had on hand was some recycled merbau railing and it turned out perfect and has a really nice color too. Merbau is not a traditional timber for handles but was easy to work, has just the right amount of hardness and spring so not sure why it is not used more often?

Well I learnt a new tool today. Never heard of an Adz before. New merbau handle looks tops, great work Mat.

Thanks James, You would not think of using one unless you are building a rustic log cabin or something haha. But it turned out nice and i particularly like the blackened/used look of the head.

Beautiful and calm video. I'm always restoring old tools myself, and love making new handles for old saws, hamers, axes, chisels and adzes which I regularly find at flee markets. Only wood I use for these handles are Robinia and Mahogany, when sanded and oiled they feel so nice, and are very tough. Just a recommendation, try to find an old "shinto" rasp, or by a good quality one (only downside is the price of a good quality new one). A Shinto rasp works way better and faster than a traditional wood rasp/file, and they got a coarse and fine side to the cutting blade. Also, if it's possible, turn the handle 180 degrees to your adze, you will find out it swings way nicer (at least that's my opinion. Keep on restoring old tools, and enjoy the work with it.

Thanks. Good to meet others with the same passion. I have been guilty of using junk wood for my handles, I did use Australian Rosewood (rose mahogany) for a couple vintage saw handles though. Good tip on the rasp, such a useful tool, I am looking into the Shinto, the price actually looks reasonable.

Spoke shave and draw knife are great tools when it comes to carving handles.

Hi George, Seeing those sort of tools in action is very satisfying and I forgot I have a spoke shave sitting on the shelf. I also have an old draw knife that needs a sharpen and new handles.

Thanks. I just got one at a flea market and restoring it also. It has an owners marking that I traced back to a man born it 1850, so these tools have been around for some time.

That is super awesome ! Having the history of a tool makes it so much more valuable. Congrats on the find.

Congratulations on this restoration. I think a straight edge would be better for handling. The curved edge is certainly not original and is the result of a lot of sharpening. The handle has become perfect. By the way, a nice sound check at 0:51 ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed this video ! Im recording my process of redtoring two old adzes myself ! Today i will start making the handles . I will be using white oak for handle material because its what i have around my shop and i feel it will be plenty durable enough for its purpose! My adzes dont have any makers marks that are visible thats the only thing that bothers me . One says ALLOY on the bottom but thats all i can see

That's awesome, and Adz are awesome. Hope to see a vid on your channel soon and if I ever learn to use one properly, that would make a good vid too. As long as the head is good steel and holds an edge, that's what matters unless you are after a collectors item. Oak sounds like a good choice for a handle as it used for ax handles. We don't see much Oak timber in Australia.

it turned out very good looking indeed. good job on the handle! I need to buy a rasp like ours, but I can't find a good one online. what is the name of this tool? what is the purpose of this tool? I thought it was for gardening? or is it for removing bark from the fallen logs? what is the hammer end for? I ask as many questions as a little kid, I know...

The tool is an adze or just adz. It is the sort of tool a barn builder would have used to square up beams 100 years ago. It is a tool used before Jesus to rough out raw lumber and now obsolete. The remaining ones are often moved to the garden and used as a mattock. I guess people hit the head with a hammer if they were not a perfect shot and want to leave a nice scalloped surface with no gouge marks. A mushroomed head seems common and obviously often hit in that way, but it is never talked about or no one admits it. That part of the head looks like it it designed to be hit but it is probably just to give the tool extra mass and momentum. Some adze are specially designed with a hammer head but this one is not and you can see it is not hardened by the way it has mushroomed over. The rasp used in the video come from my Dad, seems like they are becoming less popular too but are very effective for handle making.

I’m of the opinion that an edged tool should be a sharp the work will allow it to be.
@Saw-IT

Thanks Greg, That's a perfect answer. A sharpening bevel will probably make it tougher at the edge too. I will wait till I have some real work for it, see how the edge holds up and then sharpen as necessary. Probably worth getting into leather work to make custom sheaths at some point too.

Years ago when l used to use one . The edge was sharpened at different angles depending the hardness of the wood being cut . The edge was allways finished on the finest oil stone l could get . The handle was allways made of ash wood to give a bit of spring .

Is the Adz ever attached to the handle permanently like an ax or is it made to be easily removed for re-sharpening?
@Saw-IT
@Saw-IT 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Warren, It is like a pickaxe or mattock. Easily removed by banging the end of the handle. So you need to shape the handle pretty close to the taper of the eye to make a tight pressure fit.

@@Saw-IT Thank you Mathew. You confirmed what I "thought." I have seen a lot of Adze and have never seen one with the wedge in the eye. Makes perfect sense now. Thanks again.
