Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home At 9 metres and 1.5 tonnes, Allosaurus was a formidable Jurassic hunter. But its bite was surprisingly weak - so how did it make a kill?
This episode focuses on the Jurassic period, a time when the first giant killers stalked the Earth and lurked in the seas - and the slightest advantage meant the difference between life and death.
In North America, the iconic allosaurus, an ambush hunter with a lethal bite, dominated. Not even the heavily armoured stegosaurus was safe from this killer, and incredible evidence reveals a glimpse of a vicious battle between these two giants.
Life in Jurassic oceans was no easier - in 2008, a fossil was dug out of a frozen island high in the Arctic. It was a colossal marine reptile, twice as big as most ocean predators at 15 metres long and weighing about 45 tonnes. This was Predator X. Its skull alone was nearly twice the size of a Tyrannosaurus rex's, and its bite force unmatched by anything in the Jurassic seas.

@J The reason why (in my opinion) Allosaurus is more interesting, is the fact that it didn’t have a strong bite force, instead it used its head like an axe. Tyrannosaurus however, had a simple case of a powerful bite force. I think how Allosaurus killed is one of the reasons I’m fascinated by it.
@user-gb7ho6pb4p
@user-gb7ho6pb4p 3 жыл бұрын
We are doubting Allosaurus’ axe-like usability because of the idea of it only being able to engage with the top of its skull, or it will smash the bottom part of the skull on the bones. Allosaurus would likely use its 79 degree gape to use it on much meatier sides as join its teeth for multiple rips, while also using its forelimbs and maybe toe claws. I personally like both animals. But, I find Tyrannosaurus more interest not just because of the 6 ton bone crushing bite, but also because it was an expert ambush predator that used its muscular, thick body to act as a fighting predator, too.

Honestly I'm just glad that Camptosaurus had some screen time. It was one of the most abundant dinosaurs of the Jurassic period, but it's not well known in pop culture due to it's mundane looks. The poor thing is overlooked by the general public because of all the other famous dinosaurs from its time period. Dinosaurs like Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus and Allosaurus overshadow Camptosaurus all the time.

Let's be real here... Tiger, Rhino or Cow. Allosaurus, Stegosaurus or Camptosaurus. It's obvious why, it's the same as the current modern day animals. No one really cares about Cows or Chickens but they're all madly in love with Tigers and Dolphins. No one cares about the thing that's at the bottom of the food chain, they never have and they never will. It's just fodder.

There are odd exceptions of course, but let's be honest here... Would the majority of people want to see some medium sized dinosaur that has no extraordinary feature, nor is it scary. There is no draw to it, where as Allosaurus for example, is fast, brutal and scary. It also doesn't help that the graphic designers always put mundane and bland colours on the "boring" dinosaurs but vibrant and loud colours on the "exciting" dinosaurs.

@ianjones7294

A fun fact: We live closer in time to the Tyrannosaurus rex than it did to the Allosaurus. T-Rex lived 66 million years ago, while Allosaurus went extinct 80 million years before the T-Rex came along. Allosaurus was a fossil in the ground when T-Rex was walking the earth. That really puts things into prospective for how massive a time span the dinosaurs were around.

I am 14 now. And I remember watching this when I was younger. I was obsessed with dinasours and how beautiful they are. I used to collect dinasour toys and making my room a dinasour forest. And I remember building a whole world, including dinasours, humans, mermaids, animals, unicorns, cities, wars, zoos, castles, forests, oceans, deserts, beaches, the north pole. Using my imagination and my toys. I even made a wall separating this world from the bigger world. And making a world full of monsters and gods looking on the smaller world. Just like earth and space.

The majority of Allosaurus paratype specimens are 9 meters in length based on measuring Scott Hartman's diagrams. The largest specimen is assigned to Epanterias amplexus, however, there are no valid diagnostic differences between Allosaurus fragilis and Epanterias amplexus. The only obvious difference is the size difference (9-10 meters for A. fragilis and 11-12 meters for E. amplexus). "Epanterias" is likely just a large individual of A. fragilis. On the other hand, Saurophaganax maximus varies from A. fragilis in chevron and vertebrae morphology (Saurophaganax supposedly has a more robust centra and diapophyses, and the chevrons superficially resemble knives, hence their referral as "meat-chopper chevrons"). It's unlikely that Epanterias amplexus is a valid distinction from Allosaurus fragilis, but the possibility is open for Saurophaganax maximus. The "head-as an-axe" adaptation in Allosaurus is described by Bakker as a departure from earlier and more conservative Jurassic Morrison Formation theropod dinosaurs (E.G Ceratosaurus, Megalosaurus, Torvosaurus). The paroccipital process in Tyrannosaurines and basal Megalosauroids and Ceratosaurians is augmented laterally (which is consistent with prey restraint and such) but in Allosaurus is augmented dorsoventrally, allowing for more efficient up-and-down movement of the craniocervical section (Bakker RT et al. 1998). The attachment point for M. longissimus capitis superficiallis is relatively low and is also augmented dorsoventrally (Snively et al. 2013), and the animal's artiomandibular joint and occiput allow it to gape its jaws at roughly 90 degrees. This adaptation is consistent with attacking prey an order of magnitude larger than the predator itself and is referred to by Bakker as "Brontophagy". The paroccipital process is also augmented dorsoventrally in the related Carcharodontosaurids (particularly Acrocanthosaurus and Giganotosaurus) but not to the same degree of extremity as Allosaurus. It's possible that Carcharodontosaurids sacrificed a bit of the paroccipital strength in exchange for more cutting efficient teeth, which can severe muscle and other layers of soft tissue with minimal effort. The muscular augmentation in the head and neck of Allosaurus is consistent with axe-style biting and also pull-feeding (which the program didn't mention). See Bakker RT (1998) for craniodental mechanics and Snively et al. 2013 for the analysis on M. Longissimus capitis superficiallis.

Luigi Gaskell While I do agree with you on the placement of AMNH 5767 within the Allosaurus genus, I have some doubts on it being a large individual of A. fragilis. Though the specimen shows no autapomorphies, it is about 3 million years younger than other A. fragilis specimens (Tithonian age). Also, the famous `Big Al´ skeleton, although a subadult with a length of around 7.5 meters, is estimated to be 87% the size of a fully grown individual (Rebecca R. Hanna 1999), meaning that an adult would be about 9 meters long. However, of course, this is just my opinion, and I may be wrong. Also, thank you for your comments. Though relatively recent, Planet Dinosaur already has some inaccuracies, and it's good to have someone clearing them up for others. I suggest you comment on the BBC's Walking With Dinosaurs videos too, since they are causing some misconceptions too.

Thats a busted theory, only half true. It did use its neck muscles to inflict damage like a komodo dragon, but it didnt bash its head forcefully. Its something I dont like about these documentaries, they state like facts things tbat are only suggested and being investogated
@MrDioXIII
@MrDioXIII 5 жыл бұрын
@@eduardofreitas8336 Two points. 1) The theory on it having a bite as strong as a lion is also wrong. Those that proposed the hatchet theory compared it to numerous large cats. The lion was not one of them. It's bite is closer to a Tiger's (about 1000 vs a Lion's 600-700). 2) It was more likely that it used its strong neck muscles to thrash around its head after biting. It's teeth are unusual in that they are saw ridged on both sides of its teeth, so it's far more likely that it bit a vital point like the neck, then shredded it by thrashing around. That's far more plausible than the silly hatchet theory.

Its age does show a lot with the outdated science, like the long-legged Spinosaurus model, Sinornithosaurus having a venomous bite, and the Allosaurus swinging its head down on prey like a hatchet. I wouldn't say it's the best dinosaur documentary. I'd say Prehistoric Planet is better, partly because the CGI and animal designs are as good as they can get, but mainly because most of it focuses on multiple aspects of life. Not all of it focuses on just predator-prey relationships, there's also courtship, symbiosis, child rearing, power struggles, etc.
