My explorations of mutable instruments' Plaits ventures into unknown territory. Before making this video I had rarely used the right side of the module. Whilst it's not as instantly gratifying, it certainly rewards exploration. Crazy noises, dark textures, a mini-rings and more will be unveiled in this video and I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

These are the most comprehensive vids I’ve seen on plaits, learnt so much, great idea about mixing the two outputs i’d previously just lived with the sounds being different levels! My plaits is definitely sounding better thanks to these videos, the music you create sounds awesome!

Love it! Particle noise is still my favourite mode. You can get the same effect pinging BP filters or phasers but Plaits is quicker and easier. For really mind-blowing sound design, you can patch the VCV version polyphonically and get up to 16 channels of that effect, which is absolute madness 😄

I recently discovered that you can use the Plaits oscillators on the Korg Minilogue xd and Prologue. Doesn't have as many parameters to mess with as the hardware module but still fun. Thanks for providing some insights on how to use them.

Yeah, the algorithms are open source so they're available in a few places, software too (obviously in VCV Rack and also the new version of Surge XT). Even better in software actually because you can use polyphony.

@@kjell_lundblad Every MI module is more than its stated aim. Frames, Tides, Stages for example - Each one does so many different things. Blinds is a vca, but does ring mod. Rings can act as a comb filter. Elements can do bass or strings or drums or a thousand other sounds. Warps does cross modulation but also delays. Even Links and Kinks and Ears have multiple uses. I started my rack with them, and they quickly became an integral foundation of the system. I but modules from others, of course, but my MI case is a jewel in the crown.

As grain length gets closer to the wavelength of the fundamental, the pitch gets more and more obscured, and it sounds noisier. This is what's happening with lower morph settings in granular cloud mode.

Shakmat dual dagger filter. It is a stereo filter with separate frequency knob for a low pass and high pass filter and one resonance knob that can be linked to either high pass, low pass, or both. It also has pan cv inputs for the high pass and low pass output.

Yea.. some algorithms were a bit too loud so I'm using Maths as a VCA/mixer
