1/24 Update: Like many others, I bolted awake this morning to the news that Brendon Urie is officially retiring Panic! at The Disco. I can't say that I'm at all surprised given his online presence disappearing, the content of the few interviews he gave for the album, and the album itself over the last few months, but there is still a part of me that can't believe it. To any Panic! fans who find this video in the meantime, know that everything I say in this comes from a place of deep love, because I wouldn't have made a 2-hour video about this album if I didn't care. This band and the music gave me and a lot of others a lot to love over the years, and it's refreshing to see a music artist step out to retire. Finally, congrats to the Uries! I wish their family luck and love and a relaxing life out of the spotlight.

1/25 update: I should have my film major status revoked, I just saw Boogie Nights for the first time and there is little to no way that it didn’t directly inspire the Sugar Soaker music video, with the Polaroid and the party and everything, THERES EVEN SOMEONE NAMED MAGGIE ! If only I had, you know, seen Boogie Nights 1 days ago.

It’s a sad ending to the P!ATD and it’s the first band I closely followed in my life that has announced its end. P!ATD had such a magnificent story that no band is quite like them and sometimes I look around and try to find something more about P!ATD. And then I stumble on this gem of content, and this will certainly keep my mind busy for a while, so thank you! :)

Well it kinda makes sense. He says how much of a fan he was of frank Sinatra and Queen. He made an album that felt like an ode to the kind of Music Sinatra did. His last Album was an ode of rock and bands like Queen. Plus he hasn't been kind to his voice unfortunately and as versatile his voice is its going to die eventually.

I am still BAFFLED by his decision to play the album in full. Panic! At The Disco shows used to be such high energy, people were almost in awe of his stage presence and as you said, it goes against what he’s said before. It’s a bold move to play any album in full at a show, never mind a new one that’s not popular with fans. I hope the setlist changes for the UK show I’m at.

Seeing this video after Panic's death announcement is crazy! Did the man write a bad (in my opinion) album on purpose, so people could leave him alone? Also, he announced the band's end through an album, and nobody catch it?!! I feel so dumb! Your theories are sooo amazing! They made me notice great ideias in this project, that I've never seen before. Looking back, Viva Las Vengeance clearly looks like a desperate letter of goodbye. It's chaotic, but now it makes sense, so thanks for making it make sense! I found the music videos kinda disturbing (even for Panic! standards). May Panic! rest in peace. Thanks for the masterpiece of a video! ♥️

I highly disagree that Brendon wrote this album intentially bad because tbh to some of us fans it’s not a bad album. Some songs yes are pretty weak but the music sounds so raw. It’s super fun to jam out too and also just fucking wild and everywhere to which I think makes it hard to listen to lol. I feel like the production of this album was a possibly fun time for those behind it. Buttttt it’s also possible the desire to create something easy for everyone to love was not considered at all and it was more of a fuck it attitude lol

Me and my best friend went to see PATD at their last ever concert. The crowd went INSANE at the first few songs, which were all the hits between AFYCSO and DOAB. Then he performed the ENTIRE Viva Las Vengeance album 💀. The crowd went mild AF. Nobody cared, people just wanted them to move onto the good songs. Then the last TWO songs were the songs we actually wanted to hear. The crowd again went insane for those, but it ended so fast. Everyone walked away disappointed

Something cool I noticed was the lines "Didn't want to kill the DJ / But it can't hurt to try" in VLV reference the very origins of P!ATD. The band name was inspired by The Smiths song "Panic", in which Morrissey sings the lyrics "Burn down the disco / Hang the blessed DJ / Because the music that they constantly play / It says nothing to me about my life" followed by him repeatedly singing "Hang the DJ". Brendon writing these lyrics serves as a sort of closure (Especially with it being the last two lines of the song like hello?? Genius). The DJ has finally been killed because the music no longer speaks to Brendon.

wow it took me like three days but i finally finished the video... i think like many other former diehard panic fans i listened to the album when it came out and then kind of disregarded it and almost never thought of it again... but something about it pulled me back at some point. after the anouncment i got so depressed thinking i'll never get to experience panic live again so i impulsively bought a concert ticket and a flight ticket to europe. i just know i'll regret it for the rest of my life thinking that panic! at the disco, the band that got me into music in the first place, just... ended without me. i hate all the hatered and toxicity in the fandom in the past couple of years, hate that we went back to this stupid division between pre-split vs post-split fans, ryan vs brendon etc when really we should be celebrating the band's entire discography and history. it's been almost twenty years. people change, and that's okay, as much as its sad for us, its gonna be okay.

I'm part of the minority that really enjoys the album and I love the change in direction that was made from PFTW , going from a more mainstream pop sound to the nostalgic 70s/80s glam rock/rock-n-roll approach that was done here. Brendon absolutely made this album for himself and it's brilliant to see such a personal side to his music, especially showcasing the rawness of his emotions, even down to the methods used on the album in comparison to DOAB/PFTW. While there are some icks with the album, the storytelling is so layered and the lyrics, while somewhat simple, let you underpin different meanings within songs: Are the characters in Something About Maggie/Sad Clown just characters used to tell a love story, or are they representative of opinions of Brendon in the real world? Who is Local God about? Is it even about anyone in particular? Does the focal character change between the bridge and the verse/chorus? Do It To Death is very clearly about burnout, but could it be to do with anything else? Trying to please fans who dislike the new direction? Struggling to express himself (and eventually exploding after bottling everything up, hence the video) after the events of 2020 which led him to go radio silent? MOAB/Sugar Soaker are very similar in theme but placed on different sides of the album; was Side B representative of a failed resurgence which happened due to the same damaging things repeating over and over again? The list goes on, and context is especially important when unpicking this album but the lyrics are simple enough to let you believe whatever story you want, if you even think there is a deeper meaning. I truly don't think you can really compare VLV to any other album because of just how different the themes and goals of the album are. The basically-zero promo (one interview and some Times Square posters) for the album could also be for so many reasons too. I think it's totally understandable when people say that this album can be the reason to turn them off from Panic!, but there will never be another AFYCSO, another Pretty Odd OR another VLV, and nobody is forcing anybody to listen to anything they don't want to listen to. If there is an 8th album, I'm looking forward to it because we know that it won't be anything they've done before.

i guarantee you we are not a minority. keep in mind that some people like to hate on VLV saying things like "uhhh its to self centered 🤓🤓" or "uhhh too selfish writing about himself" (btw, they say self centered, ego music is awful and selfish and it doesn't make you feel anything UNTIL Taylor swift makes it) just to fit in, dude, try saying "i like VLV" on twitter and you'll see what I'm talking about

Loving this video! I've seen P!ATD four times live, and the VLV tour back in September of last year was my last time. I had a feeling it would be the last tour. Or the last one for a while at least. Urie's silence on a lot of the album's details and the lack of press really made it seem like he wanted to quietly fade away from Panic. So glad I got to go since I figured the album wasn't gonna sell well and this would be my only chance to see these songs live. The only bummer was the lack of Vices & Virtues tracks in the set list, cuz like you, that's my favorite Panic album. Glad I saw Panic on the V&V tour as well back in the day. They played more than half that album and it was amazing.

ok but having a roommate you can theorize with?? that's so cool. like that's so fun. one of my theories is that so many of the songs sound the exact same because it's playing into the theme of "doing it to death" or repeating yourself over and over again. it helped me appreciate the album slightly more... not enough to say it's a good album but enough to be like Hey! that's actually a pretty cool way to do it if that was intentional!

I was at panic! show in summer of 2016, in Moscow. Back then we had a lot of foreign acts coming with shows, relatively often, I think either Twenty one pilots or Gerard Way had a concert in the same weekend. And the concert hall was full the the brim, lines were insane, I had a balcony seat because I didn't want to be in the crowd, but the pit/fanzone looked like a human ocean under me. And it was one of the biggest concert halls in Moscow. And Brendon was so alive during that performance, amazing stage presence. Sure, I think he was drunk, and he was wearing a jacket over bare chest, and became topless one song in, but he talked SO MUCH with the audience, made quips, had iconic backflip from the piano. It was great, and I'm so happy I went. And everyone knew all the words, and it was magical. I have to go back :(

What's interesting about local god is that people interpret it in one of two completely different ways, and both sides are pretty adamant that they're the "right" side. Either it's mocking, and about how he did better than the local god, or it's some form of admiration for the local god as they were satisfied with doing their own thing, even if it kept them small. I don't really like the album, so I've only listened to the songs a handful of times, but my interpretation of the lyrics has switched between these polar opposites almost every time. I guess it sort of depends how you're feeling when listening to the song or reading the lyrics. But I also think it's impossible for Panic! fans to listen to the song objectively as we all know too much about the band, what went on, and our opinions on the members.

Firstly, thank you so much for this video, I really enjoyed your analysis! Saw one of the UK shows a couple of weeks ago knowing that it was one of the last and was so glad I got to see it live. Was sad it was an album tour rather than a farewell tour though. Loved it but also very sad I didn’t hear some of the old classics. My take on all this. I feel that it was always going to end this way, and the timing/manner of the end of Panic! had been meticulously orchestrated to feel pretty abrupt and unsatisfying for many fans, even though VLV pretty much spells it out. It hurts like losing a loved one who had been ill. We all kinda knew it was coming but the timing wasn’t expected, and they left us sooner than we would’ve liked and without the last big farewell with all the classics. EDIT: But then I also doubt that would’ve ever been possible as the “band” has become unrecognisable from its inception, so maybe that was also why, because trying to do a farewell tour would’ve been a disappointment too. It’s a lose-lose situation. I wonder if it was an intentional decision to play the whole album through to show that Brendon has turned into something he doesn’t like? The fact he’s contradicted his original stance on live shows almost ties in with the album and his feelings about what’s been done to him as a result of the fame. The foreshadowing in this album is actually a masterpiece. In my eyes, the tour played out exactly as the album portrays. Brendon’s lower energy, not interacting with the audience, and not being able to tell if he was enjoying it, all rings true. The songs that were omitted would no doubt have left much of the audience feeling shortchanged. The album itself can be seen as an album too far, with Panic! being “done to death”. The lack of engagement in the middle of the shows mimicked the album petering off in the middle. The parallels are so strong, at least to me they are. That in itself makes this swan song a piece of art, even if it missed the mark and is not as enjoyable or memorable as previous work. I also actually really like Sad Clown… the chaos is so distracting I get lost in it! However, I totally get it could also be anxiety inducing (Probably intentional like you said)! EDIT: OR I’m completely overthinking it all and he was always planning on stopping when he became a father, and that’s just how it worked out timings wise as the tour dates would’ve been locked in before his wife was pregnant. 😂

I haven't listened to this whole album, so I could be wrong. But STP (was also a band in the 90s/early 2000s.) It stands for Stone Temple Pilots. Vocalist Scott Weiland left and became the vocalist of Velvet Revolver. Might be a dual reference there?

While P!ATD is no more, I do hope we'll get more music from Brendon after he's had time to rest and enjoy becoming a father. The way a lot of the fanbase has treated him since the stuff about Zach came out is pretty shitty IMO. I know he didn't respond to the accusations in a timeframe that most were happy with, but that isn't a good enough reason for people to go out of their way to ruin his career and quite literally bully him into exile. Digging up the stupid shit he said at seventeen is just a low, low blow. I understand holding people accountable for the things they've done, but in Brendon's case, I think it's safe to say he is not the young, dumb kid he was when he made those comments. There are so many celebrities who have said much worse and yet, they're allowed to keep on keeping on. Regardless, this was an excellent video. Your analysis was spot on and if you were to ever make another about any other albums, I would watch it. Thank you for the energy and time you put into this.

I personally love viva las vengeance, I understand why people hate it because its not the same like death of a bachelor or pray for the wicked. 12: Something About Maggie 11: Star Spangled Banger 10: Middle Of A Breakup 9: Local God 8: Sugar Soaker 7: Say It Louder 6: Do It To Death 5: Don't Let The Light Go Out 4: All By Yourself 3: Sad Clown 2: Viva Las Vengeance 1: God Killed Rock And Roll I can't believe I'm seeing panic for the 2nd and last time, now knowing it's the last tour ever! 😭

I know you mentioned that this album started your feeling of being over Panic! BUT I really like your interpretations of it! I've been a fan since 2006 so I also have a bit of a soft spot for them/Brendon no matter how much time passes and it's nice to see a more unbiased take on the album, especially because I recognize there are some uhh misses in there tbh. Also, Say It Louder and Star Spangled Banger are my least favorite songs & I cackled at your interpretations basically being that they weren't good lmao

I loved your analysis/deep dive it was fun and i think you did a great job im just relatively new to this band but im heavily obsessed with them. An interesting thing I can point out about the earlier mentioned going back to the beginning... Brendon in song titled Viva Las Vengeance says: I don't wanna be a diva, I just wanna be free On a sofa with Sativa, Living the dream... Meanwhile in the A fever you cant sweat out (more specifically in the song titled there's a good reason these tables are numbered honey, you just haven't thought of it yet) Brendon says: Talk to the mirror, oh choke back tears, and keep telling yourself that "I'm a diva" ... anyways... At first i also hated this album but now i got used to it and its kinda my most favorite album now because its not the best but its fun. I can compare this album to a drug: you dont like it at first but its from your most favorite band you have listen to it you have to like it. On the second listen your already familiar with it you know what it does what songs are there what emotions it triggers. On the third listen you think that its an okay album. On the fourth listen you like it and you are absolutely used to it and you have no problem just vibing to it. On the fifth listen your fully in love with it, youre basically addicted at this point.

The line: "I don't wanna be anonymous but I don't wanna be you" is a variation on the line "I don't wanna be a diva, I just wanna be free". These lines are talking about the same thing. I think they're drawing a dichotomy between the free-spirit and the industry baby. He's saying that being free comes at the cost of being a nobody ("I don't wanna be anonymous"); But being popular comes at the cost being a sellout. Therefore, I think the line "I don't wanna be you" is directed at the big dogs of the industry who he sees as sellouts, and he's maybe even seeing himself in them to some extent.

The thing is, if you are going to play an album from front to back, then you do have to keep it interesting. Melanie Martinez does this through set and costume changes as well as choreography to give every song their own atmosphere and aesthetic. Even if you don’t like her music, it keeps the performance interesting. It also works because her albums are stories from start to finish. It makes sense. But if you are not going to go through that extra effort to give every song it’s own aesthetic and atmosphere and just play the songs front to back, then it’s understandable for an audience to become disengaged when they know you from your older ones.

I have always felt like middle of a breakup was describing the album itself. That hes "breaking up" w the industry aka ending the band. Not to mention the relationship between him and the general public has already been steadily declining in the past few years w many ex diehard fans even walking away. So I think he knew there wasn't really anything he could do to fully bring Panic back to its glory days. But this album was still a last hurrah of him just throwing something out there to give the remaining fans something aka the "make up sex". He probably knew the album wouldn't do well so he just had fun without thinking of what would be successful as he already peaked. It makes me so happy to see somebody go so in-depth to these lyrics because I honestly assumed most of them were just gibberish and wordplay. So from one ex diehard to another, great video!

This video is amazing and i think truly shows what being a former/current panic stannie is/was like. Just be careful. The mythos of this band sucks in new kids everyday and because there’s not much VLV content. You might become a new figurehead in this sad fandom.

I think local God is his way of saying that after all is said and done his being “almost famous” is not any better than Ryan following his heart. I don’t think it’s a dis , I think it’s a concession or even perhaps an olive branch. Besides, Brendon doesn’t pull punches when he doesn’t like them he just says it-usually with several well chosen curse words in it.

Brendon did say somewhere that this is his rock opera. Which kinda makes sense listening to this album. That being said, I have loved this album, it was refreshing after listening to the mainstream album everywhere for 3 years. (If I hear high hopes 1 more tiiimmmmeeeee) lol. Sad sad sad news he's retired the band. I just got to my 1st Panic show in 2022 after 18 years of listening to the awesomeness that is Panic! The gf and I were talking about how we need to go to another show, and I was so pumped to. And little did I know, it was the end of the road. Like a slap in the face. I'll just have to hold out hope after being a father for a bit, he'll want to make another album, or at the very least, a proper farewell tour. Keeping my fingers crossed.
