Although this was done from the comfort of home, it is a good example of my favorite techniques when out painting on location.
A line and wash painting of an alley in Florence Italy
Music by Jason Shaw, www.audionautix.com
MATERIALS
PEN: A Pigma Micron pen, 005 nib. I'm using a rather worn out Pigma Micron 005 nib pen. It creates nice scratchy, sketchy lines.
PAPER:
Arches 1401b Hot Press Paper for this Video.
My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep.
A note on Davy's Gray: I rarely use this pigment straight and when using it I usually mix it with each colour used.
PAINT PALETTE::
The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
The paints are poured onto slips of paper and then stuck to the palette.
BRUSH:
A Polar Flo 1/2 inch flat brush is my current favorite. The bristle were originally white but have become stained.
I often use inexpensive brushes because several of my techniques are quite abusive.
Whenever the brush disappears from the screen it is either being wiped off or rinsed.
REFERENCE IDEAS: come from my imagination/memory, my own photos or by painting on location.
Thank you for Watching!

I am always fascinated by your line technique, Peter, and where you begin your sketch. As someone who continues to fight with perspective, it appears to me as though you use your pauses and smaller roof lines to keep perspective sorted, which is a cool way to monitor it.

Somewhere in my past I was told in city-scapes buildings normally appear darker as one goes further away from the front of the sketch. This is used as a technique to enhance perspective. It sure appears to have worked here. I really enjoy watching, and learning, from your videos. Thank you.

I just discovered your videos. I've been wanting to do Urban sketching for a travel journal for years! I've taken some Crafty classes, and watched other KZfaq videos but couldn't get the hang of it. Their camera angle isn't always right, the instructors have a hard time explaining and painting simultaneously (which I know it would be challenging to have to do both) it's edited so you don't see the entire process. The screen is crowded so you can't really see things. Your set up is PERFECT! Thanks for showing the reference photo in the beginning so we can screen shot it. I use my phone to see it. I then watch and sketch/paint along side you on my iPad, I like you do not talk (it's not distracting), you tell us which colors you are using, you do it all in real time so we can do the project together!! So please do not change! I did two videos with you and then had the confidence to start on my own and did it!!! I posted them on my Instagram and tagged you yesterday. :).

Thank you, again, for sharing the reference photo. I think many as they draw and illustrate draw from reference and from our imagination.. When folks put me on the spot to draw something without a certain subject. You know the type. "Oh, I'd love anything you do..." I draw from a rusty imagination. Usually found from something real that has impressed or I have repeated. It's nice to watch someone else do the heavy lifting, (Paint and draw.) The music helps. Husband of profile lady.

Thank you for your demos, they are so informative. Why do you prefer pouring colours on the bits of paper than into pans, is it so you can arrange them accordingly to your choice of color s?
@PeterSheelerart

Thank you. The paints are squeezed onto slips of paper and then stuck to the palette with two sided tape. This makes replacing or changing colours quick and easy. This practice has damaged my palette so I have discontinued using it.

Hi - Really nice demonstration. Thank you. Can you tell me something? At 14:21 or so, when you add the darker colour over the wet yellow ochre ... why doesn't the dark colour bleed into the lighter yellow ochre on its left? That's what happens if I try it!

Hello Peter - I have come to line and wash recently - have to say i really love your videos and doing them over and over makes a good way to practice. I like they present a simple focussed idea. Peter I wonder if you could recommend 2-3 books that will help me in making line and wash paintings. Thank you,sir.

Glad to hear I've been of help. Sorry, I can't suggest a book as I've never used an art tutorial book.

For curiosity, do you paint with the paper flat of with some angle. Thank you!

Hi Miquel. I keep it fairly flat, but work with it in my lap often.
