Hey Scotty, I reckon you probably could have made 3-4 videos out of this one and it must have taken at-least a couple of days for just 22 minutes of content. I don't know about everybody else but I think if you were to post shorter 5-10 minute videos showing the build process and then one longer video upon completion with a compilation or key steps for the previous videos this would yield more content and I'd probably watch all of those videos too.

Just my amateur view... but having a sense of adventure I feel is a virtue, or what I regard as an element to attaining a kind of enlightenment. You are on that path! You're also an inventive person with many impressive skills where you envision something and with various pieces you create and construct what you conceive of or dream of, and that's a kind of ingenious leap. You also did not want to sail alone, but you also have a kind of empathy too where you share a unique and remarkable experience with someone who would have never experienced that before, a grand magnanimous gesture. Thank you for sharing so many gifts with the world. Life is a journey and you're one on the path less taken, and a great one!

Top tip for future fabrications, you can make sure everything is aligned when tacking it using a spirit level on the different faces and surfaces. also tack as much of it up first without full welds then if something needs adjusting it makes life so much easier.

The Lake Lefroy Mini! I'm in the process of building one too and it's been handy flicking through this vid for little details. For the steering I went with the 90 degree cut on the spine then weld brackets on for the steering shaft socket since I figured it'd be easier than cutting the angle directly into the spine... still got it crooked though.

I use to live in Lancaster and have been out to El Mirage a half dozen times - much more fun and much faster than sailing a boat. I had a correctly calibrated digital speedo and had my cart going 45 once, often 42 You have to keep in mind you face is literally 2 feet off the ground so you really get the sensation of speed. I'd have an ice chest with a couple of burgers and beer and go ping ponging across the lake all day stop to pee and stretch my legs then open another beer and Get Back At It I've put 70 miles on in a day thanks for this video, I'm going to put together another cart

At 8:25 the bushings don't fit: Why not get bigger bushings vs redoing the entire rig or anything else? Just thinking it is easier to lower the water than to raise the bridge :-) Very cool project but I would rather fall into the water at 5 or 10 knots than onto the dirt at 45 MPH... You never sleep but hey, which one was faster? Who won?

Good result but I was curious why you used steel rather than aluminum? Ease of welding perhaps (mig vs tig)? And why you chose a single sided fork for the front axle? Seems like a standard 2 pronged folk would have been way easier? I'm asking because I don't know. IF your answers are "because that's how I chose to do it," that's fine too. Just wondering.
@StrangeParts
@StrangeParts 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I chose steel because I don't know TIG yet (and don't have access to a TIG welder). And the single sided fork was just because that's what the plans I was following did. A lot of other land yachts use aluminum and have double sided forks:)
@StrangeParts
@StrangeParts 6 жыл бұрын
I will say though that this design has worked out great - both boats are off the same plans and sail really well.

spool gun mig or tig for aluminium is pretty tricky, espicially to get strong parts with relatively thin wall tube. mig on steel needs like a few hours of practice before welds become very strong and pretty easy to do.

Yeah, when i was learning to weld aluminum i burned so many holes in sheet aluminum. I worked for my uncles welding company growing up and he had a large shop with lots of good equipment. He even had a early version of the Water Jet machine cause this would have been early 2000's.
