Reader’s Note: As you listen to this Appeal written in 1968 to then Patriarch of Constantinople, His All-Holiness Athenagoras, notice how few words would need correction or updating in order to apply to our own day, now in the year 2021.
“What do You think You have achieved by Your unique, but wholly uncanonical and unprecedented meeting with the Bishop of Rome? Most simply, You strengthened the Latin position on the schism. And what did Your melodramatic, far-fetched salutation, Your clinging embraces, and Your uncanonical exchange of gifts achieve? Precisely to increase the danger-the danger that the awareness the faithful now have that Papists are heretics will be blunted. Dialogue, prayers together, receiving of gifts, and "liberalizing" innovations are unforgivable according to Orthodox prescription, because they adulterate and change what has been transmitted through the holy Apostles, the holy Fathers, and the Ecumenical and Local Councils.”
“Glory be to God, there exist in this land of martyrdom a love of Orthodoxy and a spirit of resistance. Like an ocean wave, Orthodox thought will overwhelm and sink Your skiff on its course toward a servile, anti-Christ union (submission) with the superheresy of Papism. Florence shall never live again in any form whatsoever. We will tolerate no kind of betrayal. The Greek people, a people who has once given birth to many like St. Photios, Patriarch Michael Cerularios, and St. Mark Evgenikos [i.e. St. Mark of Ephesus (+1439)], will not tolerate betrayal. God has swept away the betrayers.”
“We rejoice over them as he that has found great spoil, and press to our bosom with gladness the divine Canons, holding fast all the precepts of the same complete and without change, whether they have been set forth by the holy trumpets of the Spirit, the renowned Apostles, the six Ecumenical Councils, by councils Iocally assembled,... or by our Holy Fathers... And those whom they placed under anathema we also anathematize; those whom they deposed, we also depose; those whom they excommunicated, we also excommunicate; and those whom they delivered over to punishment, we subject to the same penalty...” (First Canon of the Seventh Ecumenical Council).
Elder Philotheos Zervakos (+1980) was an Archimandrite, spiritual father, missionary, confessor, and wonderworker in Greece in the 20th century. The spiritual son of St. Nektarios of Aegina, Elder Philotheos preached and heard confessions for 68 years and built 12 churches, two monasteries, three cemeteries and two schools. The money he would receive from the faithful he would distribute to the poor, the widows and the orphans. He zealously confessed the faith, guarding his spiritual children and all who would listen against the many temptations and deceptions facing his people. Elder Philotheos is not formally glorified as a saint, but he is treated like a saint by the people of Greece and beyond.

I pray for all our Holy Orthodox Bishops, that may be deceived by the demon of false unity with the heretic. May God lead them back onto the right path. Also I hope with all my heart that the late Athenagoras in his last moments realized the error of his way and asked for Christ's forgivness and mercy.

@@macariusofnc7482 Rome was never in charge of a single ecumenical council for centuries, was not in charge of the council of Jerusalem (nor was Peter specifically). The canons of the ecumenical councils specifically prevent the possibility of papal supremacy. Pope St. Gregory the Great said if any Bishop comes and claims to be the universal Bishop let him be under God's curse. Papal authority as it is practiced since the schism has never been legitimate and was explicitly banned by the church. That's why you schismed. Get out of here with your man worship. How can you still believe such a thing when the fruits of that tree are so clearly rotted? Look at what Francis is doing, he brought pagan idols info the Vatican and prayed in front of them!

Well, we should beware of Ecumenism. The problem with the philosophy/heresy of Ecumenism is that it tries to say that there are many ways to God, and that ungodly beliefs are as valid as Holy Orthodoxy, and that among Christians there are many bodies of Christ, not just one. The Orthodox Church is the Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church of Christ. The one and only body of Christ. Rome broke from us in 1054 A.D.. The Church of Rome aided by the children of the devil who weren't Christians at all in persecuting the Orthodox faithful in Western Europe, conquering Anglo-Saxon England, burning old-English Bibles, setting up a Latin Patriarchate to rival the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem; destroying a Western Rite Orthodox monastery in Mt. Athos, and sacking Constantinople. We don't need to accept their heretical theology, dogma, and calendar. We Orthodox Christians must be many in culture, cuisine, and tradition; but one in Orthodox dogmatic theology. We can have culturally Bulgarian, German, Russian, African, Greek and Italian, Arabic, Jersusalemite (Palestinian), Orthodox Christians working together for one Orthodox Church of Christ. Not be divided by our cultures, boasting one cultural people as being superior to the others, or changing each other, but rather loving and working together with each other. The Truth of God, was the greatest quality of the Old Code of Knighthood, indirectly created by St. George the patron saint of knights, St. Maurice the Carthaginian, and St. Theodore the Recruit. So it should be with us Orthodox Christians today.

I ask not in argument but in genuine respect and confusion, what is it that makes the Gregorian calendar so bad? Is it the fact that the heretical pontiff did so in his own pride and "authority" or rather because it is not true that the Julian calendar has drifted form the solar year by 13 days? If it did drift and a Council of all Orthodox churches adjusted the leap year for the Julian calendar, would that be acceptable? I ask as an ignorant American catechumen.
@OrthodoxWisdom
@OrthodoxWisdom 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the new calendar is not a dogmatic issue, not something that makes someone automatically a schismatic and without grace. We have Saints who lived on and accepted the new calendar. However, the new calendar was introduced without conciliar agreement and without need. Many local Churches rejected the calendar and saw it as an innovation. If all local Churches adopted the new calendar then we’d have a whole different situation. As far as I know the old calendar is not accurate according to the solar movements. The issue is conciliarity and innovation, bringing division to the Orthodox by a non-Orthodox methodology. And of course there’s the Apostles Fast that is chapped down in the new calendar. But it’s not a dogmatic issue, not strictly a matter of grace or no grace. So while the new calendar is problematic, we have Saints who lived on the new calendar. Look at Elder Ephraim of AZ! Tell me he isn’t one of the greatest Saints!

@@OrthodoxWisdom Thank you! I ask because many of the wonderful Elders and Saints that you share with us here who are more akriveia oriented also decry the new calendar. In such an individualistic, relativistic and pluralistic society as the United States, akriveia is deeply needed to take us to the bedrock of the Orthodox Faith and Praxis. I'm enjoying the Divine Liturgy in English at my OCA parish very much but if Holy Tradition calls for the Old Calendar then I'm going to have to learn Serbian. 😂

I hear very much where you are coming from. Look at Fr. Seraphim Rose: he steadfastly held the old calendar as preferable and promoted it above the new calendar, but also communed at his monastery pilgrims from new calendar jurisdictions. He, and other Saints (I think St. Porphyrios was on the new calendar but I could be wrong) walked the royal path and give us an example. Go to a parish that is faithful and feeding the faithful, sitting at the feet of the Saints and not modernist theologians foreign to the mind of the Saints.

@@OrthodoxWisdom sigh. The fundamental problem is that the ancient cannons state that only a valid Emperor can fully authorize a valid change to the calendar, no matter how practically we need the change. I’ve read that, just prior to WW1, there was talk of having Saint Czar Nicholas act as an acceptable proxy to authorize the change, but now we have none.

No ecumenical synod has approved the use of either the Gregorian nor the revised Julian calendars, and there currently is in Orthodox Pope of Rome and Patriarch of the West to participate in such a synod or council. The Orthodox jurisdictions using the hybrid calendar (Julian for Movable Feasts, Revised Julian for Fixed) are equally in error!

If a church or religion rejects union, I see no problem with that, speaking as a former Catholic, but still retaining some of its precepts pre V2. Also I have met many holy people, seemingly, in many religions. To each his own, imo. I have high regard for the orthodox church but do not understand its insistence on beards (for men, not women) and since the RCC and some Orthodox churches have been infiltrated by...we all know by whom...it's mentioned in the video, then what???

The Church both contains and transcends her members. The saints are the Body of Christ par excellence. A great temptation of the last times is not only to doubt the person of Christ but also His Body, the Church. But no matter how sinful some of her members are, the Church will not be prevailed against because she is Christ’s Body, both human and divine. Do what you can to find faithful men and women and connect with them, crucify your mind and follow the witness of the saints, those who embrace and exemplify BOTH the truth and the way of Christ.
