Today we are taking a look at a diver that has a bit of a different design. It's the James & Muriel Proteus. It's a fairly thin 40mm diver with a narrow lug to lug of 46mm. All powered by a Miyota 9039.
Note: Some of the links above are affiliate links, I am an Amazon, Armilla, Aliexpress, Spinnaker, eBay and Phoibos affiliate so I would earn a small commission on qualified purchases. But most of the time Amazon is just the best source to link something just to get a look. I always encourage you to shop around and find the best price.

Great review Shane. It is not a bad looking piece but it does need a bit more oomph at that price. The competition is pretty tough for that dollar amount. A great bracelet design would definitely help.

It's seems a bit out of proportion with that big steel bezel and small green dial. Yet the blue version looks fine.

Interesting looking watch. I think I prefer it with the bezel matching the dial colour though. That lume does look cool though.

Ask them to send you a blue dial with the blue 60 minute bezel on a bracelet to review. That looks like the signature combination. The lume cutout is a brilliant touch. I love BGW9 lume; and expect that it would be simply stunning on the black or blue dial. That lume would be best matched, IMO, with a silver sunburst dial, or perhaps a matte white dial. There are longer lasting lume formulas out there, but these would be green rather than blue. Functionally, green works better in a dive watch. It lasts longer and is more visible to the eye. Still, I am impressed. They are definitely thinking outside of the box. And, the lug to lug is short enough that even a man with baby wrists could wear this watch. The quality of the bracelet is going to be critical though. I really, really like the idea of the steel bezel. But, it needs to be slimmed down in order to avoid upstaging the dial and hands. I also really, really like that they chose a movement and a dial that are sans ornamentation; no day or date complication. IMO, these complications are useless to a diver, snorkler, water skier, or jet skier. Who cares what the day and date are when you are doing any of these things?

It's interesting however I prefer a design that allows you to tell the time at a glance. With those small hands and small hour markers it just wouldn't work out for me. I love the lume effect. Good rundown on this prototype Shane.

Interesting look. Love the moss green dial which looks like it has a matte finish. The design needs some finessing, though. Specifically, I think the ratio of dial to bezel needs to be tweaked - bigger dial with larger hands and markers/thinner bezel. Thanks for showing it to us.

I guess I'm supposed to know, but I gotta ask, are James & Muriel real? For a watch, I'm not crazy about the company name. A question that you'll soon be tired of answering, "Who are James & Muriel?"

I have a watch with a Miyota 9000 series in and it's fantastically accurate and I've never understood why so many reviewers mention the noise of the rotor. It really isn't a thing unless as you say you hold it up to your ear. Really not a fan of the brand name. Much better suited to a diner. Its only my opinion but the watch just seems disproportionate, huge bezel, small dial, tiny indices. But if you like it, go for it, at least it's an original design
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 жыл бұрын
For me it's no issue at all, but I've heard others complain about it enough that I mention it for those that are overly sensitive. As a whole I really like the 9000s. Every one I've had has been pretty accurate. Plus they are really thin and better priced then most eta based movements.

Nice review! The moss green dial is refreshingly different, and looks particularly good on the light brown leather strap. The border lume markers, too, look really good (but the lume time should be better). I find the hour markers too small, and the hands have a delicate feel that seems somewhat out of place in a dive style watch. Also, I think a flat sapphire crystal would be a good choice. The overall effect of the watch isn't bad, but I just think it could be better. Thanks again!

I think they came up with a very different design that many will like. As for myself, I prefer a larger dial face with a thinner bezel. I would also like a Selita movement. The rotor noise on the Miyota is a bit loud. Shane do you know anything about the STP movement? I belive it is a clone from Fossil.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have any personal experience with STP (yet), but I know a little about the movement. I believe fossil bought out STP a while ago to have access to their own movement shop. So any of the nicer watches they have, like Zodiac, will use them. Plus a few microbrands have used them from time to time. I've read that some people really like them, and other people say QC on the movements is an issue. So I'm not sure how good they are. But Fossil has a lot of money behind them to make improvements as needed. The one thing that's surprised me is that Shinola isn't using STP in their new automatics. They used one for their first limited edition auto but then switched over to Sellitta. Technically they have no official link to Fossil, but lots of personal connections. So I would have thought they would have stuck to STP.

Nice review love the camera work This watch has a lot of nice design aesthetics my biggest problem is the dust on the dial I know it's a prototype but one would think they would be more careful with a piece they are sending out to reviewers that coupled with the fact that the last watch of theirs you reviewed had sloppy solder on the wired lugs leads me to believe they need to work on their quality control especially for the price

I had one delivered yesterday in the black dial. It’s not bad at all. The second hand is the one polarizing feature. I can tell you that the lightning bolt sort of disappears in sunlight and pretty much all I can pick up on is the arrow tip. It looks good in indoor lighting but that’s a matter of personal taste. I can say this without that hand it wouldn’t stand out from the crowd like it does. The lume looks pretty cool. I’m sure Shane will cover it all in detail.

It's hard to put my finger on it, but; there is something about the watch that comes off as a bit odd. Maybe the relationship between the dial and the bezel. I see what you mean by it losing your attention. The dial and bezel don't work well together. Or, at least; for me. Good video.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I was thinking they needed to have a painted cross hair on the dial, or change the 3 & 9 indices to match the 12. Something like that would help bring focus to the center.

Nice review as usual. Your right, there are a lot of divers out there. Personally, I really like divers, but O can understand wanting something different. I personally think this looks much better with the colored Bezel on the bracelet. I am really not a fan, just does not personally interest me. In many cases personal preference has more to do with anything. It would have great specs and be a great value, but if don’t like it really doesn’t matter. From an objective view as possible, it’s fine for what you are getting. Nice they kept the dial clean and are using a true no date movement.
