In this video we have a discussion on filtering on a Motorcycle. It can be somewhat of grey area, especially for non-riders. Filtering in the UK is legal but it can also be dangerous at times. By learning some key points of what to do and what to look out for, you increase your chances of filtering safely and avoiding any dangerous situations.
This video is broken up into two parts. In the first half of the video we'll go over the theory side of things including what the Highway Code says about filtering and also the tips I like to use to stay safe while filtering.
In the second half of they video, I'll show some animated diagrams showing potential different scenarios you're likely to find while filtering.

I swear looking out for other bikers is the majority of what life savers are for, bikes teleport in!! As for filtering, it is the god mode of riding, rolling past long queues of stopped traffic. But I find if I'm not trying to get anywhere in a hurry, which is mostly the case if I'm on the bike, then I'm happy to join a small queue. Always being at the front, always overtaking everything in sight, that's a lot of work man. I'm usually out there to enjoy the ride!

Passed my test in October. Been riding my own bike since November. Not much as I’d like with the cold weather but finally had my proper filtering session yesterday and it honestly is an amazing feeling. I’d say about 2-3 miles of dual carriageway was going 5mph at most mostly stationary. Zipping through that traffic is honestly like a God mode. But I did have a few people move closer to the white line to prevent me getting past, still did get past but still. If you’re comfortable do it. But like this video explains. Be extra careful and don’t get too cocky or too comfortable. Anything can happen. Be safe :)

I use many modes of transport, including a motorbike. I always think of filtering as moving between lanes of traffic going in the same direction. Once you move to the opposite side of the road, that's an overtake and I don't think incoming traffic is obliged to give you priority or assume you're going to force them across. I've seen lots of videos of people getting irate when riding on the wrong side of the road because they think they're filtering. They're not; the oncoming traffic is moving faster and they're overtaking stationary vehicles in their lane. The overtaking rules apply there and not filtering. I'm enjoying your videos btw and I find your voice quite relaxing to listen to

Great video, thanks. I passed my Mod 2 in July and initially didn't want to filter as I wasn't confident enough. I went out with a couple of friends who have a lot more experience than me and watched what they did, and now I find myself actually enjoying filtering. I approach the filtering in pretty much the way you describe in this video and if the traffic is moving at anything more than 20mph on any road I usually don't bother. You're dead right though, the only way you get more confidence with filtering is to filter!

I started off with red lights, and small streets where the main speed is in the 5-10mph range and slowly worked up to being a more confident rider at higher speeds. And thank-you for pointing out the bell ends that filter at 50mph. Give us a bad name for sure and it's just not necessary

It never ceases to amaze me that car /van drivers don’t know what the broken white line down the middle of the road. It’s like drivers are ignorant of the rules of the road. If it’s a straight road and the opposite lane is clear, and it’s safe to do so (so not in the middle of town, near a school etc etc) then there is nothing wrong for one car to safely over take the car infront as long as it’s done in a safe manner (I.e mirror signal manoeuvre and then same again to pull back into the lane).

1:40 - This should be publicised. When I used to ride the number of times car drivers deliberately blocked me off. Could have been 'He's getting somewhere while I'm stuck here in traffic, I'll soon see to that'. But at least some of the time it was because they thought filtering is illegal and they are 'doing their bit'. Though I had drivers who would move over to let me through. He mentions this at 13:47. 5:32 - Exactly what I used to do. That way I had more of a chance to react if anything happened. 13:17 - I always used to wear a hi-vis vest and a white helmet. As he says, it gives you more chance to be seen. Overall this video should be required viewing for any rider thinking of filtering.

I'm glad your foot is a lot better now. Thanks again for a very informative vlog. Down here in the East Midlands I've come across a lot of cars that when they see you trying to filter in stationary traffic, they will deliberately move to block you from getting past. It is so annoying at times. I've watched other people on bikes deliberately smash their wing mirrors off if they do it to them lol 😆 hopefully they'll learn in future not to do that again. Just out of interest, does it stipulate that you should stay behind the first car at traffic lights? When I'm out with my partner he goes to the front, even if it means he's over the line a bit. He's probably doing it so he's not stuck behind anything though.

@MotoEcosse
@MotoEcosse 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers, David. Speed is something that comes with time as you build confidence. Getting 50mph out of a 125 always feels like you need to try and max it out to get it there. I'd spend a lot of your riding time, if you can, on dual carriageways. You don't have to try and match the speed of other traffic, but instead get used to constantly traveling at say 40mph. Then 45 and son. If you feel uncomfortable at the higher speed drop back down. Time and experience and of course, doing it safely. What kind of speeds do you feels comfortable at just now?

@MotoEcosse
@MotoEcosse 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers, David. How are you enjoying riding so far? Empty car parks or similar are great for things like practicing throttle control. What I used to do was to have the bike running but in neutral, and just practice slowly turning the throttle. Try and get to so many revs and hold it for a few seconds then slowly ease it back off. Do this to 1000 rpm then 2000 and so on up to about 4k rpm. Then do the exact same thing but in first gear, just creep along holding it about 1000 rpm. You'll quickly build up muscle memory. It's also worth checking how much free play there is when turning the throttle. There should be around 2-3 mm of free play before the throttle engages. If there's too much free play it might make it harder for throttle control and may need adjusted. 🤜🤛

Slow and steady is definitely the best way to use the throttle. Make sure your grip is loose. The tighter you grip the harder it will be to make smooth motions. Practicing at home is a great idea if you can. Especially getting used to loosely gripping it.

Some nice points 👍. I, being a rider of bikes and driver of cars would like to point out 1 or 2 items. On a single carriage way ( back road, town, 1 Lane going 1 way and 1 going the opposite) that isn't filtering, that's overtaking. Filtering is threading between traffic moving in the same direction. The lane hoppers your talking about are little different from us bikers filtering (trying to gain any little advantage). I personally think filtering is good. The police wi tell you that filtering is legal as long as you don't have to speed to do it. Not going higher than to 5-10 mph faster than the traffic your filtering past is safer for us the rider. How many bikers use indicators when filtering? Lastly filtering is legal but other road users do NOT have to leave you space. It is not a legal requirement for them to do so. The law is on the bikers side if other road users "close the door " on you. Filtering (passing) at chevrons is fine as long as it has a broken white lines. It is illegal for all road users to cross a solid white line. 1 little tip. The faster you filtering the less likely other road users will spot you. Your risk, not their fault. Happy safe riding.

One of the funniest things I’ve seen involved filtering. I was travelling between two lines of traffic on a one way street. Car on the outside Lane sees me coming and moves left (traffic still stationary). It was a blatant act on the drivers part. The amusing part is that a Police bike was following me! He promptly dismounted and “had a word” with the driver, who promptly returned to his lane when the traffic moved forward. I howled I’ll be honest.

Well the main reason is because if you did go infront of the lead car there's a good chance you end up with your bike over the white line which is a big no no. If there is a big enough gap then it's the riders call. This is only a suggestion in the highway code and not an official rule but it's always best to be courteous while out in the road. 🤜🤛

Bike comes up to junction on the right with car in front of him. Car flashes us to come out from the junction because of the density of the traffic and stops to allow us to turn right. Bike undertakes the car on the left (two way traffic)and we cut out in front of the car and bike is this classified as filtering as the bike nearly came into us from the kerb edge near side.. This to me shouldn't be allowed and probably causes many accidents across the country. Especially cyclists. This is traffic stopped for courteous reason. Should he have stayed behind the car that was being courteous until he had turned right.

Now I see a different, and way better response. Before it was just "if you want to see it go do it". I'm just starting out and wanted to know when I should/shouldn't, and what kind of things to watch out for.

@@jamesjellema7072 mmm that's odd. KZfaq being KZfaq I guess. When it comes to should/shouldn't you need to really think about the width of the gap, if you think you can easily get your bike through then go for it, if you're unsure then hold back. When you do first start filtering, go for gaps that are massive. This is mainly to get you used to passing through traffic. The more you do it, the more it becomes second nature. If there's ever any doubt when it comes to anything related to riding, don't do it until you know it's safe. There will always be another chance to filter, overtake or whatever you plan to do.
