It's so true! People DON'T do research or check facts. That's why there are so many beliefs about what truly happens at death. It is a neat idea that I had been looking into myself recently. However, most HEPA filters are made of borosilicate (fiber) glass or polypropylene fibers with a percentage of acrylic binding (think latex paint). That simply ISN'T SAFE for individuals with a latex allergy-or really anyone else for that matter-as you run the risk of inhaling copious amounts of fiber glass material. There are "allegedly" synthetic brands that MAY not contain fiber glass (though still contain the other materials mentioned), but the specifications and transparency of that is murky across different brands. I'm currently looking into other non-woven materials for a safer option. ...Just so you know, one of the tell-tale signs of too much fiber glass inhalation is a sore throat-for those that still choose to make these. Stay safe everyone.

It talks about a filtering system in the room, and other equipment, but not the masks. You are fooling yourself if you feel this will keep you safe... You will be inhaling fiberglass or other unknown material that will severely damage your lungs, or whoever wears these masks. Dr. Ryan Southworth Dr. Ryan Southworth 3 days ago I called the manufacturer who told me they were made of PTFE. But even if it was fiberglass, I will still use this over the risk of illness. Also, the CDC guidelines talk about DIY/homemade masks. I never said or insinuate that the CDC endorsed this, in fact I made a very clear statement that this was a very unscientific study. Just for clarity: HEPA filters take out 99.97 down to 0.3 microns and the viral particle is about 0.12 microns. However, the virus doesn't just float around in the air without being surrounded by moisture. SARS-CoV-2 (the virus) that causes COVID-19 (the disease) is in droplets. When a droplet containing the virus hits the filter it is absorbed by the filtration system and gets stuck to the fabric. It is interesting to note that the N95 masks that are recommended by the CDC only filter out 95% of particulates. It is also interesting to note that the PAPR devices (think hood-like space suits) are considered better than N95 and have... guess what....... A HEPA FILTER! 4 Dr. Ryan Southworth Dr. Ryan Southworth 3 days ago (edited) To alleviate any concerns... here is a link to a HEPA filter mask made by 3M... it is (of course SOLD OUT) but it confirms the current use of HEPA filtration/safety... www.achooallergy.com/3m-8293-mask.html Please note the description: When it comes to personal filtration of particles, the gold standard is HEPA. You get that and more with the 3M 8293 HEPA filter face mask. Soft and lightweight, this fully adjustable mask exceeds the CDC recommended N95 rating to help prevent the spread of viruses like the flu, SARS, H1N1, and Avian flu. A valve allows for better air flow while letting moisture and warmth escape. Perfect for the workplace, at home, or on the go, the 3M 8293 HEPA mask is an inexpensive solution for filtering out allergens, oily aerosols, viruses, and germs. Replace after 150 hours of use. @@SCORP1ONF1RE Thank you for the quick reply. I mean this with no disrespect to the doctor, but I stopped reading when he stated, "...But even if it was fiberglass, I will still use this over the risk of illness." While this doctor may be fine with ingesting fiber glass, many other doctors and medical staff would certainly not be okay with doing so. And we still can't ignore the fact that other chemicals such as acrylic and latex are found in these products as well and could cause severe negative reactions for those being supplied with the masks-even if there was no fiber glass present. It is also important to note that Hepa filters come from different manufacturers-who have different procedures and use different materials. Medical grade Hepa filters versus random vacuum Hepa filter bags...I'm not sure one equates the other; clarification is needed. Most people taking the doctor's advice and sewing these masks will be sourcing their material from all over the place, which may impact quality as well. Even though this video was prefaced with a lack of scientific fact, it is still endorsed by a doctor. If we're being honest, the average layperson will take a doctor's advice like its scripture-which is dangerous. The cons-in addition to the pros-should of been clearly addressed IN THE VIDEO, as the majority of people watching will unfortunately not have the foresight to do their own research-because the information is coming from a doctor. That is irresponsible. I understand the idea behind wanting to find better protection for those in the hot zone right now (and it is a desperate situation)-but we can't neglect safety in other areas. I can not be encouraged to willingly sew masks for medical staff knowing that there is even the slightest chance that a single person receiving a mask could be adversely affected. That is not my call to make-nor this doctor's. They are going through enough as it is. I will continue to do some more research on my own about this. In the mean time, I will support hospitals with what they are suggesting I support them with. And I feel that those making these masks should send them with a disclaimer. That being said, most hospitals, at least where I live, will not accept these anyway, so I'll stick to what they are asking for, for now.

This holds the filter in place, and protects the exterior of the mask. For the interior of the mask, I insert a piece of a facial tissue cut to approximate size to catch the spittle and nasal discharge that will occur. The tissue can be discarded and the cover washed in a machine thus keeping the filter mask almost clean. I have tried other non-duckbill masks and found breathing difficult. The duck bill allows a reservoir of air to allow you to breathe easily. Thank you Dr. Southworth.

While it is better than nothing, it’s not a comprehensive filter. The particulate will just take the path of least resistance. This is why they always say a HEPA filter needs to have an airtight seal to be truly filtering out particulate with 99.7% efficacy. Applying the same concept, the sides of the mask would also have to be airtight in the worst-case scenario of a sneeze where the force would lift the mask off your face.

Much easier to just cut filters out of the HEPA and insert them into the cloth mask. No, the filtrete HEPA filters do not contain fiber glass for those asking but you still shouldn’t be inhaling them. Put fabric between the filter and your face. Another reason to make these as inserts and not sew them into a mask. You also need to be able to wash the mask and REPLACE YOUR FILTERS. Inserts also eliminate the worry about the holes from stitching. The filter is not touched. But huge thanks to these Docs making these videos. This is how I learned to make masks that protect the wearer and we’re still a covid free family in 2022. Pro tip! If you’re crafty, skip the pricy vacuum bags and buy yourself a TRUE HEPA HVAC filter. Once you remove the stuff holding it together you get FIFTEEN FEET of filter! Much cheaper and you get much more out of it. But you must take GREAT CARE when you undo the filter. Otherwise you’ll end up with tiny pin holes and little rips in it. DO NOT use a piece you poked a hole in. Not worth it. Find a section with no holes. I lost half my filter the first time I tried but 7 feet is still a lot. Now I can do it without losing more than a foot or two to damage. I use a small pen knife for crafting and the blade with the rounded edge I find best as it doesn’t poke and slice unwanted like straight edge does. And lastly, for those questioning this man regarding “virus size”. You are incorrect. End of story. They use HEPA filters in those covid suits at the hospital to filter their air. It actually performs slightly better than N95. Look it up, HEPA vs N95. Lots of studies. Just make sure your masks has a PROPER FIT. If your glasses fog the fit is not good. Metal nose pieces are cheap on amazon and easy to slide into the seam of the 2 mask layers. You can even snip a mask you buy and slide the metal into that seam then sew your tiny slit shut again. You can also cut a slice on the far edge of the INNER LAYER of fabric in a mask you buy that has no filter pocket and slide your filter in between the two layers of fabric. I use the liquid stuff that seals fabric edges where I make my cut so the fabric doesn’t unravel. Thank you again good sir for the video! You docs 100% are the reason my family has gone 2 years Covid free. Forever grateful!

Great stuff. I would suggest just one improvement. The major issue about producing proper p3 (N99,99) masks is about using microsuturing or gluing. The holes in the fabric at the suture line are the weak points of such DIY masks and if you are to use it in the presence of infected person rather than on the street I would make sure, that additional layer of nonporous material is glued to the suture line. Just a narrow piece of thin flexible plastic could be glued over the suture line on the outside with the glue you used for the nose wire (I am a physician myself so that is not out of blue suggestion).

This is what I have recently learned directly from Hoover customer care: "Our vacuum bags have only been designed and tested for use in vacuum cleaners. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend for people to turn vacuum bags into makeshift face masks since this could give users a false sense of security and potentially put them at risk. Vacuum cleaners mechanically create a condition that facilitates effective filtration through the vacuum bag, but humans are unable to create this condition. Therefore, these types of masks cannot provide the appropriate filtration and would only provide minimal protection. With that being said, we are partnering with suppliers that have an expertise, volunteering resources, and redirecting vacuum bag materials that can be used to manufacture face masks to assist in the fight against COVID-19. This is the best way we can currently help, and we will continue to look for ways to assist.

HEPA material is not safe, producers like Hoover have warned (see the comment section). BUT: search on smartairfilters(dot)com with What are the best materials for making diy masks. (the humble tea towel ! or cut up cotton shirts). smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus/ I am sure professional, bought masks are better, but you can come pretty close, despite the "holes" in the woven fabric. In practice a close FIT is very important. I am astonished that tea towels (the fabrik is loosely woven) should be that good, but they did the test. The material is also meant to be absorbant, and that does not suit the virus or bacteria with which they tested. Also the article about: N95 masks versus surgical masks (the finding during the flu season. Officially N95 is less protective. But it is much more comfortable to wear, and brings almost the same results, that was a clinical study). They also have an article: What’s a Reliable Way to Disinfect Masks from Viruses Without Harming Effectiveness? - the materials of bought are impregnated (water repellant, that is intended to help also against viri and bacteria getting through) and you lose that by washing. The hull of the virus is weak it breaks if exoses to soap or detergent, thus the 20 second hand washing. It is not only that you rinse it off, the soap literally destroys the virus. DIY cotton masks can and should be washed. probably hanging them up to dry - even better in sunlight - and washing every other days should work. The virus does not fare well on absorbant surfaces (like cardboard) when they are dry.

You shouldn't be wearing elastic straps, or have a mask that does not cover your entire head, and block off air supply. I know this is well known now, 5 months after your comment, but we in Sweden knew from the start that a) the virus was a mild flu virus and b) no mask a human could breathe through would protect against a flu virus. Our death toll has not risen, compared to last year and the year before and the year before and... so we're doing something right. Take off the masks; they're causing bad infections.

Also want to add that splitting the elastic down the middle to make it a quarter inch instead of the half inch size I had, just kept unraveling so I had to replace all the masks elastics that I had already done with something else. I did find some extra large hair elastics and if you cut it to open it up it works real well and I just used a silicone small hair elastic to secure them which can be rolled up or down to make the loop tighter or looser. For those worrying about a tight seal, you can use surgical tape around it. I have trouble with the nose piece, so just use tape there, the rest of the mask seals great by itself if you have the elastic tight enough. Also, if you search KZfaq, you'll find other doctors who have extensively researched this and say HEPA filters are safe and do not contain fiberglass. If a product contains fiberglass, the label must say so. The filter material must have a MERV rating of 13 or higher or a MPR rating of 1500 or higher.

A couple of things regarding the elastic: 1. Elastic needs to be stretched at least a few times before you cut it to length, or it will stretch out longer than it's supposed to be when it's worn. 2. Unless you're using the hard to find Fantastic Elastic, elastic should NOT be cut lengthwise as it will unravel.
@Joodster4 жыл бұрын
Given that these don't have to last long (single patient use in the best-case scenario), and given that most people won't have Fantastic Elastic at home, cutting the elastic is probably OK. I wouldn't, but if it all you have... Or you could just use 1/4 inch elastic if you have it.

I think the solution to elastic would be to simply make ties instead. That way you don't have to worry about if these elastic is too tight for someone to wear it for hours or too loose for people with small heads or it stretching. Ties can always be adjusted for the right fit
@aliciamcnamar82034 жыл бұрын
I used hair bands on the ends . Then to tighten to snug fit I also used string or ribbon . Instead of the hair bands going around the ears I tied the string onto the hairbands so you could pull tight and get it snug. It was a good seal even under the chin. Also if you cant find pipe cleaners you can use aluminum foil baking pans. cut 1in. x length of face 4in maybe?? and fold in the raw edges so no poking happens.

As far as I know, it is not recommended the HEPA material to be in contact with one's face, even less to breath through it. Way batter to have a cotton mask made of two stitched pieces forming a pouch; in the interior of the pouch / filter pocket one should have the HEPA which may be dispensed after every use and the cotton mask washed on a daily basis. A 5 HEPA hoover bags pack would be sufficient for one person for roughly 60-ish days / two months. Actually for your model, you would have room for five masks profiles on the hose connector side if you would have on the longitudinal left and right sides the profiles in the mirror - or one the trapezoid base towards the centre, with then second with the base towards the exterior, six on the opposing bag's side.

Dr Southworth, I certainly appreciate the efforts of you and your wife. HOWEVER, those planning to make them need to know that they fit VERY small and the pipe cleaner wore the skin off my nose after only a couple hours of wear. I recommend cutting the masks slightly larger and especially wrapping the pipe cleaner in adhesive tape before gluing it to the mask. Also don't know the purpose of two elastic bands since they both slide down to the base of the neck and won't rest successfully anywhere else. Best regards for your health.

DCN I also appreciate the efforts demonstrated via the video. Thanks to the Southworths for giving information and instructions. Your mask presented the same sizing experience I had. After finishing two adult masks early this morning, neither would fit around my head properly. The pipe cleaner would not conform to my nose/face enough to keep my eyeglasses from fogging up. The template just needs some tweaking for better fit. In particular, the top elastic band needs to be 12” minimum rather than 11”. PLEASE NOTE: >> Mrs. Southworth DID print 11 inches “or longer” on the template.

I think the best way is to make a white double fabric cooton mask with a opening to insert something as a filters. I think we can use paper towel, coffee filters or vacuum bags as a filters. The good part of making the masks from white cooton fabric is that we can reeuse them again and again. We just need to make sure to wash them often with a little bit of bleach and rinse with lots of water and press with a iron.

I wanted to see how effective this is, so I made one with your pattern. I fit tested it at my hospital using the equipment that we use to verify N95 mask fit to make sure employees are protected. Wearing the mask and something similar to a space helmet, we blow some gas into the helmet with aerosolized saccharine. If the mask is properly filtering out small particles, the wearer should not be able to taste the saccharine. My first mask, made just like the video describes, failed. I suspected the reason was that the pipe cleaner was too weak, it did not rigidly hold the shape of my nose very well. I got some metal inserts designed for masks, and used that in combination with the pipe cleaner to form the bridge, and now it passes the fit test! /Way more comfy than an N95 too //The bags I used, like the majority of vacuum cleaner bags, were made from polypropylene

@@designergirl86 you can always phone the company if you aren't sure, but I don't think any HEPA vacuum bags are made of fiberglass. Boy, I hate to be a party pooper, but I just contacted Oreck to see if their HEPA bags are made with fiberglass. Here is the response I got: Thank you for your question. First and foremost, we desire for you and others to stay safe! Our vacuum bags have only been designed and tested for use in vacuum cleaners.

So I have now gone back to the lined pocketed cotton ones I made. The "filters" that go into the masks i have made are non woven interfacing. Another idea for the filter to fit into the pocket is to cut off the outside layer of a new disposable nappy but throw it away before you wash the mask after each wear. I had to use whatever I could find at home to make these as only food and animal feed stores and petrol stations are open here in Ireland. We are still in lockdown.

I don't know if someone already has figured this out, but I thought I would post this on here. For anyone making face masks, there have been a few variations on what to use for the fabric to make it the most effective. The last video I watched was of a Doctor's wife who used a Hepa vacuum bag. It made me think of the mattress and pillowcase protector covers that I use. I bought them to protect against allergens and bed bugs. The fabric is breathable! The cotton masks in testing still block about 50-70% of the particles the size of covid 19 depending on the weave of the fabric and can be sanitized by the hospital on arrival and sanitized and re used. So if all people have available is the cotton people should still keep making those as a next step resort when these vacuum bag ones run out. This doctor is right in suggesting the Hoover AH10040 for the mask (or same fabric different size big if unavailable). For those people concerned about the vacuum cleaner bags having fiberglass, make sure your mask is made from the HEPA Fiiltrete bag, like the one his wife uses. While this 3M fabric was manufactured for Air filtering, rather than masks, here is what the website says, under the Title "Filtrete": 3. Specialized filter media allows for optimum airflow. Unlike fiberglass filters, Filtrete Filters help protect your heating and cooling system and improve your indoor air quality by cleaning the air as it passes through the filter. This material is a synthetic possibly like polypropylene. So, there is NO fiberglass in this one. Personally I think this fabric is GREAT covered by layers of cotton for prolonging the life of the mask filter material
@georgemarien62374 жыл бұрын
Must realize the most critical aspect of wearing any mask is close facial conformity to the facial anatomy, the cloth margins if the filter is enclosed in cotton fabric and certainly sewing creates perforations which leak, obviating this seal as created with ultrafrequency welding not possiible with this deesign. While I understand the intent they would not meet vertfication standards or grades and could present legal liability if failure ensued. I also note this physician is not well trained in the requirements of aseptic techniques, the most important of which would be mask leak from poor fit due to his beard! I do appreciate he and his wifes valiant attempts, perhaps marginally acceptable, and sorry for deflating the balloon but I am a retired physician with 45 years infection control experience with all varieties of masks and asepsis procedures and have some concern with the rrpresentation of this application!

@@joerej1042 activated charcoal is probably on step better than no charcoal but it is not the best. An Electrostatic filtering method where an electrical charge is applied to any incoming particles at the outer side of the mask and then the opposite charge is used to collect the particles on the inner side. This way no particles of any size can get through the mask. The downside is that the small watch battery needed would have to be check regularly to make sure it was working and keeping the system electrically charged and how to then remove the captured particles from the mask or dispose and use a new one.

So Aab Aab you have raised a scare without the slightest evidence. I have a pretty good idea of the manufacturing methods and raw materials likely to have been used. You do not present this, so I believe you don’t have a clue. Do you really think that the people making, packaging or using vacuum bags are being put at risk by exposure to risky chemicals? This is an ingenious source of proper filter material that stands a chance of reducing unwelcome particulates. It is likely to be a cleaner material source than many woven fabrics generally available.

@shahnjaylaconnors14764 жыл бұрын
@@jimwoods9551 first of all, many people put their health at risk to make the chemicals, paper, etc. we use every day. Secondly, the people making the HEPA bags are not putting them over their faces to filter air. These filters are made for indirect filtering while vacuuming, not necessarily for use directly over your nose and mouth. It is reasonable to think that the filters in N95 masks have more stringent standards than those HEPA bags for the vacuum cleaner or filters for air/heating conditioning. This usage for HEPA bags on a massive scale has just emerged. We don't know the long term effects. We thought insulation with asbestos is safe, until we found out it wasn't. I'm not saying these materials have harmful chemicals or particulates, I don't know for sure, but I know that I personally won't take that chance.

My logic was to use the outside of the bag to face you nose, why? The inside of the bag is intentes to trap all the small particles and what comes out in theory should be clean air. 2. The vacuum a pressure of 20 kPa ( I just googled it) and if I’m using the outside of the bag to inhale at a lower pressure I do t think I’ll be dislodging particles into my lungs because if that is all it takes we would be inhaling fiber glass and other chemicals all the time. The ideea is very good but: - the inside part of the bag must be the outside of the mask; - the mask is a protective one for a long period of exposing time so you must have an exhale valve - it is easy to do it; - the edges here you sewed must be glued with neopren based glue ( Moment or Bison etc) or silicon in order to seal the punctured part; - the edge of the mask wich is in contact with your face must be very good in contact with the face, so you must glue or sewing a ruber reem toke from a pair of surgical gloves or other material which can make a good contact with face; Do not forget, in this kind of mask you inhale and exhale threw the mouth, not nose, so when you inhale if the mask is colapsing a little is good, that means it is in good contact with face, when you exhale the mask must not inflate that means the air has a very good flow rate and the interor of the mask will not be wet soon. Do you think that such a filter retains 0.2 |um greater particles and let out particles of glass fiber ? I can tell you that this filters are used at preasure differences much greater than human breathing. I worked 15 years in sterile drug industry and byosinthesys industry and I know what I am talking about. There are masks for two purposes: 1-2 hours single use for common people who are going autside and masks fol long term use. The most importand thing is te wet. I have been seeing comments made to use the HEPA filter mask instead of the cotton since the cotton is too loose of a weave and also that the HEPA fabric has fiberglass, How about combining the two materials?! Make the cotton mask as usual (Find a very close weave like maybe flannel for example), but add another layer that you don't sew on one side to form a very deep pocket. Take the HEPA Filter (or a coffee filter, cutting it to fill the pocket...I choose this option if you are making masks from what you have and can't afford to buy things right now) Soo the cotton fabric is very breathable, is also a barrier to keep the fiberglass at bay.6 Then before going out, slip the filter into the pocket. In the case of donating to health professionals, send written instructions on how to install the filter. Also they could send them to laundry to be sanitized, replace filter, then ready to go again! Just make sure you send plenty filters too lol STAY SAFE EVERYONE!!! I don't know anyone of you, but I would like to have the opportunity to just bump into you someday in the future! lol

Whether or not the filter contains fibreglass is only part of the issue. What else is used to make those filters? Keep in mind that they are not designed to be used on the face and inhaled through. Tiny particles of material are likely going to be inhaled, ie: dust. It's one thing to inhale a room full of air but it's another to inhale 5 inches of air filled with whatever comes off the mask. It's important to look for material that does not create its own dust and whatever chemical elements are in them. New rugs, for example, contain toxic chemicals (that new rug smell) through manufacture which is why it's important to maintain good air flow in your house for the first 6 months or more after installation. No one tells you that. Cloth fabrics go through chemical processes during manufacture which don't all come out through washing. So far, it seems pure cotton is most often recommended for face masks but they must be washed thoroughly first.

Pins, she meant pins not needles. There are small clips, like clothespins that are an alternative to pins. This is a great pattern, thank you for sharing.

Just what I was thinking. Use sewing clips, or maybe clothespins if you don't have the clips.

DO NOT SEW glue the edges

@@MarkProffitt Is there a glue that stands up to the use of the face mask?

To clarify, CDC isn't "recommending" the use of homemade cotton or other fabric MASH surgical type masks for any purpose. Their protocol for shortages says that homemade masks *could* be used as a last resort when no other mask is available. I've heard at least one other doctor say that their best use is when the homemade masks are worn over N95 masks to extend the life of the N95 mask. I don't know how effective that would be, but you might have some insight. Anyway, thank you for getting this out there. There are tons of people out there sewing masks which are probably virtually useless in a medical environment.

Jerry C you are CORRECT!!! The cotton masks can be used to extend the life of a fitted N95 if no other mask is available. So I’m NOT saying stop making those... but I am saying I believe this to be much better.... what I am most concerned about is me picking up the virus and being asymptomatic for a few days an accidentally passing it to a patient... especially those at risk! Please just do what you can and We on The Front Line are Grateful!!!!

@@RyanSouthworthDO I'm tracking. I agree that your design will be far more effective that the old-fashioned M*A*S*H type, so I've been sharing the heck out of your video (hope you don't mind). I'll be using your design to make my wife's masks. Thanks for making this video. Stay safe.

No mask is 100% effective unless it’s sealed around your nose and mouth. The only mask that’s sealed around your nose and mouth kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdORe7B8qdnaf4U.html

@C. Lord That's incorrect. They are not made of glass "particles." They're constructed of glass fibres. Says that right in the link you provided. Unless you have some information that these fibres shed particles - which is not indicated by any description of how HEPA filters function, I think you should re-read your own link for clarification.

I like the video. I did make a mask long before I saw this using the inside liner of a vacuum cleaner bag (not a hepa) sandwiched between two layers of fabric. Inside the vacuum bag is a thin layer of material that is really doing all the work. The paper of the bag is just there for support. I basically reverse engineered a standard polypropylene pleated surgical mask for my design. I started thinking about it later though; even the smallest sewing needle is 2,000 microns. The filter material has holes that will filter .3 microns. Water droplets are 5 to 10 microns. The real goal is to just filter water droplets that can carry the virus in. With the sewing needle itself being 2,000 microns, I'm thinking the sewing needle itself almost defeats the purpose of the filter by leaving such big holes. I was thinking of a re-do on my mask, but this time gluing the filter material in first around the edges, and then sewing just outside the glue line to not put any holes in the filter material at all. I'm curious of any thoughts you or hubby might have on any of this.

it's great to see that you are thinking outside the box however the sneezed out covid particle can be airborne for up to 2 hours and the water encasing the covid can evaporate leaving the particle to float around. The size of the covid particle is .06-.125 microns, so you had better be sure that your filter material can filter down that low or else you have a very elaborate ineffective maks.
