After many years of searching, I finally found what I was looking for and fulfilled a small dream.
I am now a proud hut owner in the middle of a beautiful spruce and pine forest.
Today I introduce you to my hut and what I want to convert and improve!
Of course, YOUR ideas are now in demand!
What would you improve or maybe do differently?
Let me know and let me know in the comments!
Have fun!

In the top right of the picture I created a survey for you about the hut. I would be very happy if you would leave me a feedback there. It's just a click for you, but I know if there is any interest in more hut videos. Thank you very much!! Feel free to post your wishes under this comment! All the best, Vanessa

Congratulations Vanessa. I am very happy for you. There are a few things I think you should put in your cabin. At least one (two is better) fire extinguishers. A Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide alarm. Especially for the winter and when you will be heating and cooking inside the cabin. As for the name: Vixen Vanessa's Den would be a good one perhaps. I predict many fond memories will be made here for you. Good Luck and I look forward to seeing your progress and camping at the cabin.

Suggestions: 1. Add a Water ceiling guttering system added to all 4 sides and going down and away into water barrels to be use and when it is filled the excessive water goes out and away from the cabin. 2. The hole in the wall needs full hard wood framing with heavy water snow insulation sheets 3. Led induction lights (motion detector) outside and inside. 4. Make frames to the size of ur windows and add some steel mesh to the frames, easy to remove and put up in spring summer autumn seasons and is good for ventilation. Add a steel frame mesh door as well. 5. Foldable bunk beds (one on top of each other), the wall between the bed and the other room needs to be removed and u can add some curtains for privacy. 6. cut the table into 2 smaller ones so u can use it for cooking and the other for eating. 7. Find a used medium size cast iron wood stove with enough space to cook on top. 8. Clean the floor with vinegar water mix with a mop, ants flies n other bugs will not come in. Stay safe n warm, God bless

In Nigeria, they use metal bar's to secure the windows, we call them "protectors" and you can get one's that look like wood to still keep the look of a cabin In the woods. But because it's metal, your home will be secured. This is a large project but when your done it will be amazing. I'm very happy for you 🤗

Long ago, when I had a summer job with the US Forest Service lookout, I spent the season in small cabins, watching for forest fires. The cabins had to be secured from unwanted visitors when it was not in use, so there were a set of plywood panels, cut to fit the outside window opening, and held in place by long bolts which went through the panels and the window frame, and were fixed with what Americans call 'wing nuts', which don't require a tool to remove, normally. You could easily do something similar to protect your beautiful cabin against break-in. Also, you might consider modifying the bedroom window to slide open, which would keep the window frame out of the way. Alternatively, consider a window where the frame and glass can tip inward, or be lifted out, entirely. They are often held in place by wedges, which close it very firmly, when needed. I hope you enjoy your new place for years to come!

If someone wants to get in you can't stop them. The problem is, the harder you make it, the more damage they will do. I would suggest not keeping anything valuable there and just leave the door secured but unlocked. Maybe have a sign inside that says "Welcome, please leave the cabin in better condition than you found it!" In Alaska, cabins in the wilderness are always left unlocked in case someone needs to take shelter. Something to think about! And good luck with your adventure!!!

Absolutely!! We have a little camp on a quiet lake in Louisiana, and every 2-3 years I spray the entire deck, porch & dock down with 2-sometimes 3 coats of the stuff! Once she replaces the bad boards, a quick spray once a year-or two-would really help extend the life of the wood!

Not too long ago, I heard an ex-Navy SEAL talk abut break-ins, and he mentioned how having plants or hedges for a couple of feet in front of windows, making them harder to climb into, was a good security precaution. I wonder if there's some kind of large bushes you can install..... Also, we swear by screen doors & windows in America: priceless for keeping the insects out. I don't know if you can install them easily (or at all), but they pay off!

That cabin does look like it has been abandoned for a very long time and there is plenty of work which needs to go into bringing it up to living standard, but probably worth it. You must mean wasps nest in the cabin, and they are not good to have in your cabin. I noticed that the windows have outer shutters to close and that is nice, but you can buy screen wire to put over the windows to keep the mosquitoes out during hot days and the screen isn't expensive either. If you are using a wood heater in the cabin you will need some fire extinguishers in it so if there is a fire you all can get out quickly, and practice escape procedure with your children so they know which way to leave in case of a fire.

WELL Well. You seem to be very happy. I'm so pleased to see that your dream has come true. There's lot's of work but that's a fun part of this new adventure. If I was anywhere close to you I would help you. I'll send you some ideas over time. The bed for the little ones could fold up and attach to the wall so when there not with you it would be out of the way. A drop bar on the inside of the window doors might work if there's room between the inner and outer Windows. Then there's bug screens that need to be placed between the two.a flat Rock underneath and on the wall behind the wood burning stove would do the job and fit in for the natural beauty. And the list goes on. Just courses how much money is he asking for the cabin? Any way I'm excited for you. If I can help let me know.

I once bought a cabin up in the mountains of Colorado ! I really enjoyed living in it with my daughter and mother.. we are mountain girls at HEART !! What I loved the most about my cabin was my BIG WOOD fireplace..We would spent many days and nights enjoying the fire singing songs.... WE LOVED THE the SMELL of the wood burning and the fresh air filled with pine scent... Mountain life is WONDERFUL !!!! we had our town not to far away but yet we were among the pine trees and aspens.... We even have pictures of the deer that would come to eat for breakfast with us.....bears left us alone...and we even barbecued out side.. with no fear ever..... We were blessed to have enjoyed those 5 years in the mountains.. us three girls ALONE !!! My dream is to return again and live there for good !!! God really protected us from the Big brown bears that would slowly walk by our land... They never tried to break in.. .WE THANK GOD !! We ALWAYS loved the ELKS that would make sounds at night !! Everyone that came around would be afraid of the wild life WE just laughed !!! It was a GREAT TIME OF OUR LIFE !! God bless you dear... from missionary friends..peeking in to say HI !!

Before you bring your kids or sleep in there i would strongly recommend testing the place for mold. You can get mold testing kits from amazon and many other places. Mold can harm you and your kids. Please look in to it, before you get sick from the mold!!

When wood gets mold it is there to decompose it. Its nature. The mold you are thinking about grows on drywall.

@@anthonyromano8565 Not thinking about drywall mold. I live in a country where is a lot of wooden houses and cabins. Wooden house/cabin needs a good ventilation to keep the mold and moisture out, especially if it's not constantly heated. Harmful mold in a wooden structure is no joke

Looking at the inside of the cabin from the video, it all looks pretty sound with no wet or dry rot around , it's only the cladding and roof outside that seems rundown, basic mould can be easily cleaned thats inside, anything more than that stinks like shit, I don't think Vannessa would have rented if it had stank inside , I would suggested the owner pull it down.

Get a big rottweiler for security then record barking growling angry dogs an then make it play on alarm system that run on battery. Also game trail cams will take photo of your intruder. Maybe this helps best of luck.

This looks like a really nice place. My first thought is that some or all of the windows could be replaced with what we call single or double hung windows. These are the ones that slide up and down instead of opening in like the ones you have. There are probably places like we have that sell windows and other items that were salvaged from old buildings so you could get them made of wood instead of aluminum or vinyl.

There are something called window gates. They are costume made for your windows and they can be made of iron or metal. You can put them inside the house in the window part so no one can destroy them from the outside so there is no way inside.
@Khalagata

Window over the bed: I'd suggest either installing a double hung sash, which would lift instead of swinging, or changing the windows to open outward. You'd have to leave the shutter open to open the window but it'd work. Security: I would suggest a few things, first make sure the place looks lived in at all times. That will discourage some of the break-in attempts. Next get some motion activated trail cameras and hide them watching the sides of the cabin. That way you have a record if anyone does try and can turn it over to the police. You should also put up a few real or dummy security cameras that can be seen so they won't look for the sneaky ones. Then get some LED light bulbs, power supplies and timers so that lights can come on during the night. Nothing discourages break-ins like thinking someone's there. Put some prickly shrubs, like holly, under the side windows, nobody wants to climb over those and change the inside latch on the shutters to something more secure. If you don't want to add an alarm system, you can still put up a few signs for one. Install GOOD locks and deadbolts and make sure the widows are barricaded before you leave. You can get a 4' security plate for a door that's easy to install and makes it much harder to break in, just attach the deadbolt to it. On a related note, replace all the screws on the doors and windows with larger heavy duty ones. The default ones tend to be weak and easily broken. Other: Plant catnip around your yard. It may attract cats but mosquitoes hate it. Get a camping mattress heater for cold nights. usually a small power bank will power it a long time. If you do install a wood stove, make a firewood tower. Two long planks with short wooden brackets between them You can stack a lot of firewood in very little floor space with one of those. That's all I can think of for now.

Put a notice on the front door . Something like this. Hello this is my home I am not home right now . If you need to use my home the key is above the door. Please use what ya need and try real hard to leave it in better condition than you found it . If you are inside my home please hang this flag on the door so I know you are inside. There really is no way to keep people from going inside so might as well ask them to do it nicely and to not damage your stuff. Also find a very large pair of men's work boots that are well used. Sit them just out side the front door people see those and there mind starts to make a picture of the man that fills those boots. Never hurts to instill a little fear in the trespassers.

Get access to a portable, electric generator that you can bring out there when you want it. Use it to power an electric vacume cleaner to suck up and dispose the mouse droppings, dirt, dust, etc.. Then, use a can of expansion foam and search and fill any and all voids where mice can get in.

@@WildWomanBushcraft Yes Vanessa, wear a GOOD dust mask when cleaning the first time. Especially around that bed and old bedding. BURN (or bury) THAT! Once the dust is gone, you're safe. Now that I've read more, I can better understand the fears in your country of hanta. It seems to be associated with dry summers. Here in the SW U S, it happens most in the dryer areas, just west of me. But only 750 cases(in the entire U.S.) in 27 yrs....with few fatalities. More people have died from the flu THIS YEAR. Perspective, my friend!💾
