Thanks for the review! I think I read somewhere (perhaps Surly’s website) that the intent behind the shims was that shipping with 25.4 allows people to stick the corner bars on their older mtb for use as a gravel ride. Having said that, not sure what it would cost to just make 2 versions. Probably could have saved by selling fewer widths with the different clamp options. Oh well, at least they’re providing the shims for you.

Yeah I remember reading that somewhere too. I appreciate that in some ways, but think most people will be putting them on somewhat modern bikes (I.e. my rig) or have converted the threaded/quill set up to 31.8 already. I’m really just nitpicking about the shims, it’s not a deal breaker at all.

I'm actually facing this issue right now, but extra niche as I'm trying to find some replacement bars for a Cannondale with a Headshok stem that clamps in 25.4. That these are offered as such is honestly amazing otherwise it's having to source both new bars, and a boutique stem in the well documented supply shortage.

Yes, old mtb quills, important nod by Surly.

Like you I largely am not a fan of traditional drop bars, but I love love love these. I did find moving the controls to the bottom side of the cross bar to be better for me, and it makes the hoods more useable. It does make them more of a commitment tho. Keep ‘em coming!

Great review I have been eyeballing these for sometime now, my thought would be using tri bike bar end brake levers and then you’d be able to use hood position and drops. As for tape on the hood section instead use some ESI chunky grips cut down to fit might be perfect!
@RideYearRound
@RideYearRound 2 жыл бұрын
That ESI chunky idea is great, I’ll have to try that out (maybe even go extra chunk).

@@RideYearRound yeah the tri brakes may be a bit short but worth a try

But I'd note if you do use these type you'll need to drill and file the two holes for the exits for the cable housing near the stem. And need to know whether you could route the cables through that nub through the rest of the bar.

Enjoyed the video, thanks! I have the 54cm Corner Bar on order. Going to convert my old XC race hard tail into a drop/alt bar mtb/gravel bike. Planning on getting some bar extenders to lengthen the horns, and problem solvers to get the shifters/brakes on the horns. Still have the dropper post lever and fork lockout lever to get on too, but those clamps are relatively small.

There are so many different shaped bars these days. Experiment a bit. You might be surprised. With the 25.4 clamp area, these bars can work with almost any stem, new or old. This offers options when piecing together 'nice old junk'. Its a practical feature that may save some money. Practical, No nonsense bikes are Surly's bread and butter. Its what they do! Getting your bars higher with a taller stem allows you to use the hooks more often. Its the most secure and safest position. This offer lots of handling, weight distribution , power and safety benefits. Watch pro riders and the amazing things they can do on the bike. They don't just ride in the hooks for aerodynamics. Ignore marketing and fashionable vanity. Get YOUR bike set up correctly so you can spend more time rolling around on it.

There's a carbon version of the bar at aliexpress with a 31.8mm diameter size mounting area

yes hoods missing maybe a pain , ive a salsa fargo looking for a alternative that may lift the front position a bit more
@supahbob94
@supahbob94 3 ай бұрын
the reason the bars arent 31.8 is because most older 90s mtb use 24.5mm clamp diameter which is typically what ppl would use these types of bars for, so they dont have to convert to true drop bar brake levers and shifters

Would be interested to see what you think about the newer version of the Velo Orange Crazy Bars. Trying to decide between Moloko, Corner or the Velo’s

I know surly famous with its chromoly material, but I hope they make aluminum version of those bars, 700-800 grams are too much for me 😀

I imagine the clamp size had more to do with making the bars accessible for riders with quill stems than anything(?), so if it was to save production costs, it was likely a move to only keep a single handlebar in warehouses instead of two different SKUs. Does Surly classify these bars for MTB use? Would seem odd if they don't but I recall reading that the reason VO couldn't get certified with the original Crazy Bar was due to using the small clamp size and not 31.8 but maybe I misunderstood the reason they stated.

Hey, great channel. I’m middle-aged but somewhat of a bike newbie; my only bike is a Trek Marlin 6 that I’ve had for a few years. I’m thinking about getting a new bike to use for exploring western WA forest roads, abandoned/4WD roads, light trails and bikepacking. The available bikes I’m considering are the Kona Unit X, the Salsa Mukluk and the Beargrease. There isn’t much else available. Or I could just keep my Marlin and possibly upgrade something. It’s a pretty good bike but I’d like to run fatter tires like 2.8+. Just wondering if you had any advice. Thanks.

@RideYearRound 2 жыл бұрын
I actually don’t love plus tires for the type of riding I do, but with the ECR and other plus tires bikes being so popular for bikepacking it’s really just my personal preference/what I ride. If you don’t plan on riding on any snow/sand I would get the Unit X over the fat bikes. Otherwise, I’d go for the Mukluk if you’re really wanting to get into bikepacking.

There's also a few other dirt drop bars that use a 22.2mm clamp area for mtb controls. Soma Gator bars and maybe 3or 4 others. There's more and more weird h'bar choices every year. That's great. And pretty cool. Let your freak flag fly!! Ignore fashionable vanity and marketing BS. Who really looks at their bikes while riding them ?! My aspiration is to spend more time rolling around on two wheels. Best get comfortable!

I don't quite understand why no one hasn't thought to use bar end brake levers. They even make them with shifters and hydrologic brake compatible.
@PRH123
@PRH123 10 ай бұрын
'cuz the main idea of these bars is to be able to use your MTB levers and shifters on a drop-similar bar... it gets really expensive buying brifters, which may require you to change calipers also... you can buy a whole new bike for what that will cost.... of course if you have mechanical brakes or cable actuated hydraulics, then you could use Tektro bullhorn brake levers, which are pretty reasonable... and somehow figure out somewhere to put your shifters...

I have set on my hybrid/MTB bike and really liking it. Feel the same way about the hoods. The other change for me is probably going to shorten the stem. Currently at 60mm in length and thinking gong 50 or 35. Did you have to change the stem ?
@RideYearRound
@RideYearRound 2 жыл бұрын
I used the same 45mm stem from my Moloko bars, but I think I’d like a 50mm stem with a bit of a rise on them (I’d keep it 45mm but it’s harder to find a stem with significant rise at that length).

I'm still surprised that its a steel bar, they are SO heavy!!! surely they would consider making an alloy or carbon version, there is chinese made carbon versions out there already, but I've heard they are very weak!

Satori have a few bars similar in concept to these and Jones, but in aluminum, and reasonably priced. Firebird and Falcon Aero are interesting models. For some reason Satori are not well known, but have been using a set for years and they're great... The model I'm using weighs less than 200 grams....!

Your lost me on the stem. Surly made them 25.4 for many reasons, lower cost, simple and uniform design, looks better with many steel frame bikes. BTW, 25.4 handlebar rides better than 31.8 due to micro flex/dampening.

To me, these suck. Either flat bars or go with drop gravel bars with conventional hood position for much greater comfort on the hoods. These handlebars and niche and for hippies....lol.
