Cracking The Cryptic

Күн бұрын

This is a great debut puzzle called Per Zip by Anthony Anderson: app.crackingthecryptic.com/7Q...
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits an equal distance from the centre of a lavender 'Zipper Line' must sum to the digit in the middle of that line. Black dots connect digits in a 1:2 ratio. Blue dots connect digits in a 2:3 ratio. Not all dots are necessarily given. The grid contains nine "doublers," one in each row, column, and 3x3 box; each digit from 1-9 is "doubled" exactly once. Doubled digits count as twice their value for the purposes of the zipper lines or dots.

I just want to say a MASSIVE thank you to Cracking the Cryptic for featuring my puzzle! This completely made my day (I've had a Cheshire cat smile since I saw the thumb nail) and was an excellent way to close out the year. Really enjoyed watching your excellent solve Mark! I genuinely do appreciate all you do to showcase puzzles and watching you and Simon solve so many sudokus is where I started getting ideas for setting! Thanks to all who give the puzzle a go and hope you all enjoy! -Anthony Anderson (setter)

That was an excellent puzzle. Figuring the blue dot between B4 and B5 was the hardest.

Loved the puzzle... but that doubler rule was pretty confusing. It didn't help that on sudokupad they put the rule in last (in the wall of text representing the rules). I liked that eventually I could use it to determine the positions of the doubled 3, 4 and 7. Would have loved it more if instead the doublers were confined to lines and dots. Then its extra restriction would come in handy at the most confusing time. The double nine was pretty devilish and I think I've done the most scratching and deleting in the third column. But it was fun. Thank you.

I really liked this puzzle and video. I normally am very intimidated by doublers and similar, but this feels almost doable to me, especially with your excellent explanations and demonstrations, Mark. Thanks for featuring debut setters as often as you (and Simon) do - it is encouraging to think that brilliant puzzles are coming from many quarters!

What a brilliant puzzle. It took me a while to realise how the doublers worked on the transverse zipper up left, then I just couldn't differentiate how to finish from there UNTIL I eventually remembered that each digit is only doubled oince.

What a interesting puzzle with zipper lines. Love the logic in the start, and in every time we need to find the doublers! Thanks for the solve Mark! 🤗

That last part was very brilliant where the "one of each" constraint on the doublers isn't important at all for most of the puzzle and I in fact forgot about it until noticing that the last few doublers weren't on any lines or dots, and then it wound up being extremely important to unravel the final digits.

I falsely concluded you could never have a doubler on a black dot! This allowed me to take an unjustified shortcut in box 7. I was just lucky the solution didn't have a doubler on a black dot. It was only watching Mark that I realised my error. The larger value in the 2:1 relationship can clearly never be a doubler. But the smaller value could have been! Doh.

I found this quite challenging, mostly because I kept disregarding the possibility that r4c3 could be a doubler. I kept rewinding and going forward back to the same contradiction. Finally had to watch Mark's video, up to the point at which he considered that this cell might be a doubler, and I smacked my head (figuratively)! I moved forward, finally considering that it could be one, and of course finding out that it was. My time was 48:00 even, solver number 92!

This took me a long time. Desperate times require desperate measures, and this particular desperate time was when I thought I'd broken the puzzle. I saw one crazy escape, insane but very much in line with setter perversity -- and in the process, filled one of the three-celled lines with *two* doubler digits. I thought that line was only to be filled near the end, when things were a lot more restricted. 13:30 Where does 8 go in row 9? Then what do you do when 8 + 1 = 9 is ruled out? (This wasn't the desperate measure I mentioned above. It was just a bit strange.) 23:50 The desperate measure involved the 9 just placed on the three-cell line.

What are the impacts of the correct zip line in r9 with 1-3-4-2? Because I can see the 3-6 doublers in r3&4 wouldn't work with that.
@WhoStoleMyAlias
@WhoStoleMyAlias 6 ай бұрын
I had to read that multiple times before grasping what you were aiming at. You are wrong. The correct order is as Mark entered it: 1-2-4-3. On the zipper line the 1 in r9c3 combines with the 3 in r9c6 to sum to 4, the 2 in r9c4 combines with the doubled 1 in r8c6 to also sum to 4. If you were to use the order you consider correct this would make r9c3 the double and the zipper line in box 9 becomes impossible.
@kevinlux-sullivan3809
@kevinlux-sullivan3809 6 ай бұрын
I did the same thing as you, @longdov1. I thought Mark had swapped 2 and 3 in r9, but that was because I was treating r9c5 as double arrows, not a zipper line. @WhoStoleMyAlias is correct. Short zipper lines tend to look like arrows to me.
@Raven-Creations

@ 13:18 - "Do I know which one of these is the doubler?" - Yes, if you consider the line you were just looking at, it has at least 5 and 6 on its tips, so the centre digit must be doubled. This makes R8C6 the doubled 1. I didn't seem to struggle as much as you in the middle. I think that's probably because I considered the black dots earlier. I was also keeping track of which doublers had yet to be placed earlier than you, which helped me a bit earlier than when you used it. When you switch to beast mode you just leave me in your dust.

@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 6 ай бұрын
(Assume you mean box 5?) The blue dot couldn't take a doubled 3 in r5c4. A value of 6 on a blue dot requires either 4 or 9 for the 2:3 relationship. r5c3 cannot be 4 or 9. Neither can it be a doubled 2 if r5c4 is a doubler in the row.

It's a zipper line. r8c6 goes with r9c4, not r9c6 You're not the only one in the comments to make this mistake though. There must be something about this zipper line that makes it easy to treat it like two arrows, instead of a zipper.
