@nathanlarson6535 Ай бұрын
At least the Broncos actually needed QB, didn't have a second round pick, and there was only one good QB left on the board. If the Broncos couldn't trade down, there was a historic run on QBs so it was now or never to take Nix. Even if it's a reach the pick still makes sense because I wouldn't want Zach Wilson or Jarrett Stidham starting for an entire season either. The Falcons didn't need a QB, had a second round pick, and there were three good QBs on the board left. They took Penix who I think isn't as good of a prospect as McCarthy or Nix. If they really liked Penix that much they could've had him in the second round. Literally everybody knew the Vikings, Broncos, and Raiders wanted different QBs other than Penix. If the Falcons wanted the fifth year option they could've traded up to the end of the first round to take him there instead of their first pick. The Falcons royally screwed this one up in every conceivable way.

@@Oxy404 Maybe, but it looks so stupid after we signed Kirk to a massive contract. Why draft a 24 year old to sit for at least 2 seasons? He’ll be at least 26 before he gets the starting job, if not older. Had we only signed Kirk and drafted someone else, that’s a good decision. Had we not signed Kirk and we drafted Penix, that’s a good decision. The choice to have 2 QB1s on the team when we want to push for playoff success is so stupid
@ChiefsWin316
@ChiefsWin316 Ай бұрын
@@coldramen_1nah its the smart way to go, sure fans blow up but look at jordan love, even mahomes sits a yr. Being 26 in the nfl is the new 22 for qbs, if your talented youll be able to play well into the 40s the way the nfl is setup now. A qb that gets time to learn under a really good qb is where its at, throwing them in 1st yr literally hardly ever works, plus if kirk gets injured which he does alot they have actual backup. Makes sense to me.
@ChiefsWin316
@ChiefsWin316 Ай бұрын
@@Oxy404 yep lots of fans dont understand how difficult being a startong nfl qb is. Basically all rookies should sit one if not two yrs, that time is crucial for development. If falcons think penix jr. Can be developed into a great qb then this was a smart decision.
@ShudowWolf
@ShudowWolf Ай бұрын
If you love something, you'll find ways to get better at it. It's a 4-year deal for Kirk. And rookie QBs. So he'll be off the rookie deal...when Cousins is. Could they really not wait a year? I guess they didn't want to trade up later on, plus have him develop, but still.

That's a stretch. Plenty of first round QBs don't play in their first year. Even the legendary Marino didn't start his rookie season as the starter. It's a strange pick and probably a reach but it's clear they have decided to throw everything but the kitchen sink at QB play this year and it's understandable why given how putrid it has been since Ryan left the team.

@@ashleighelizabeth5916 Be a damn shame if Cousins tears his other achilles or has a season ending injury and Penix, Jr. is a bust or gets injured. Now you've wasted salary cap, a top 8 first round pick and still can't get to the opposing QB.

@@ashleighelizabeth5916 Most of the time when a first round pick sits though, it's behind a guy who's been there a while and is clearly on the way out. Kirk Cousins just got there. I really doubt he came to the Falcons intending to mentor his replacement in his first year.
@ashleighelizabeth5916
@ashleighelizabeth5916 Ай бұрын
@@TheCyberAthlete yes it would be a shame and honestly odds are pretty strong all of that could happen. Matt Ryan not withstanding Atlanta has notoriously bad luck at the QB position. That still doesn't mean there is no potential at all in this scenario though. If things go as planned the team gets back to having a winning record with Cousins while grooming their potential next QB. The idea makes a lot of sense EXCEPT the team is taking a hell of a gamble on the two QBs they are relying on.
@shmeebs387
@shmeebs387 Ай бұрын
Not really. Cousins's contract is super front-loaded. They can cut him after the second year easy if he declines, which is possible since he's 35 years old coming off an Achilles tear. He could retire in a couple years anyway. First round QBs are lottery tickets. Now they have a lottery ticket and a safe option. And the lottery ticket gets to sit and learn for a couple years while you evaluate if he can play in the NFL.

I was hanging out in the Bootleg stream last night and EJ had a pretty good call on what might've been going on - The Falcons may have been planning to draft Cousins' replacement *next* year, but with the tampering investigation were worried they might not have a 2025 first rounder. If the plan was always to cut or trade Cousins before the '27 season (and the contract is very team-friendly if that's the route they decide to go), then Penix with 3 years of backup experience is gonna be a much better QB situation in '27 than whoever they might end up drafting in '26 or'27.

@@anthonynicholson5193 as a person who's had a total ACL reconstruction (and a true believer in modern orthopedic surgery), I dread the thought of putting the hopes and dreams of an entire franchise on a Quarterback who couldn'tt even make it out of College without accumulating 2 blown-out knees AND and 2 major shoulder surgeries. that's simply not the structural profile of a long-term plan for the most-targeted body on an NFL football field. same with Kirk's torn-up leg. both are the kind of injury profiles you cross your fingers and hope make it through a Season, not a 5-year contract. realistically, Penix's body is structurally way older than Kirk's. disqualified.

I’m happy as a Falcons fan, we get a 1st round QB, if Cousins goes down or doesn’t live up to that stupid contract, we have a qb for the future, but if we’re going to draft a QB why in the hell did we pay Cousins?! My goodness that incompetence of the Front Office is down right disgusting, and I wish Cousins kept his mouth shut, he already choking before he takes a snap it’s ridiculous 😂

As a Bills fan, it felt like the Bills played a late April Fool’s joke on us by making us sit through 95% of that draft dog and pony show before not drafting. Let’s face it. We were so far down we couldn’t get the WRs we wanted. And we didn’t need OTs or QBs. Fortunately many prime picks were ignored by teams scrounging for QBs. In the end we get to get the best of the 2nd round (made larger by that QB scrounging) and a couple more others we can use to make our team more youthful. It’s still fraught with risk but it’s not a slam dunk stupid move like the Falcons’.

As a life long falcons fan, I was initially shocked but not disappointed, thought we were going DT seeing as though the falcons never drafted a first round DT, but has had interior issues forever. I understand the job security that having these caliber of quarterbacks can create for the GM and head coach. Kirk was the only realistic option for us and we had to pay him in order for him to come here. Drafting Michael is a great future and current insurance policy. The falcons hedged a bet. I hope it works out.

None of those situation you just described apply to the Falcons. Both examples have a qb that had been with their organizations for either the majority of their careers or at least one season. Not a free agent from another team and then be accused of tampering with said free agent and then reaching for his replacement a month later.

The only way he plays this year is if Cousins gets injured and if that does happen the Falcons will have to rely on their already mid defense that can't get pressure on the QB. They would have been better off trading for Justin Fields and using the cap space to fill other needs and still draft an edge rusher, and not worry about tampering charges.

Well you know Penix has had some bad injuries already himself... It's not that he is a bad player - he isn't. It's the fact they wasted all that money on Cousins and then turn around and draft Penix afterwards. It was a wasted pick.

Feel bad for Penix, seems like such a good kid, now he's gonna have everyone looking at him with crossed arms, the announcers always mentioning when the camera cuts to him on the sideline that he was a top-10 pick, or when the defense fails to get to the QB. On the bright side, maybe they're planning to trade Kirk in a year or two. QBs will still be at a premium, and that offense should pad his stats nicely. Pretty shitty move not to tell him though.
