donald paluga There is a reason Torchwood was very popular for several seasons, Riversong and Missy were big hits with many Dr Who fans, Peggy Carter and Black Widow were very well liked by many Marvel fans, yet ghostbusters bombed, Jar Jar Burnham and STD were really terrible (at least first season), and Dr who went down hill when dialog included anti-male comments under late capaldi. Gostbusters seems to have learned there lesson. It would be nice, but unlikely Dr Who has.
@Irrev77

@@Scottlp2 There wasn't a single "anti-male" comment in Series 11. Every time the Doctor mentioned being a woman, it fit well with the scene. Like in "The Witchfinders" when she goes "If I was still a bloke, I wouldn't have to spend all this time defending myself". That's not anti-male. That's just a historical fact.

Chibnall has acknowledged that last series she didn’t use the words “Time Lord” or “Gallifrey” and that she hasn’t shared anything about her previous incarnations (save for the “white haired scotsman”). He’s confirmed that in this series she will!!

You'd think that previous incarnations, especially Capaldi's, would be fresh in Whittaker's Doctor's mind. I know the Doctor can forget some stuff as she regenerates but she spent 4.5 billion years in the confession dial as 12. This should feel like yesterday to Whittaker's Doctor. Although maybe this could be an explanation about why 13 hasn't said anything about the Time Lords or Gallifrey to her companions. She might be trying to distance herself from the Time Lords due to still feeling rage about Rassilon trapping and torturing her.

Thank you, Nathaniel, for being one of those fans who can dislike a season of a show and still give it credit for what it did right. Too many people turn into bundles of raging, unadulterated negativity the second something doesn't work for them. It takes a much more level-headed and thoughtful individual to find the positive within the negative. That's how people find middle ground, and middle ground is what makes discussions discussions instead of screaming-matches.

When the doctor was about to fall into dispair over Pompei and Donna convinces him to save at least one family or when Amy aimed a gun at him and yelled that they needed to be better than their enemies when the doctor was going to let a man be killed as examples. At first, I was going to say that Jodie does not have the acting “demeanor” to go dark, but then again, I’ve only seen her in DW. So, maybe that would play to her strengths as an actor. I've been rewatching Series 11 recently and I think the fundamental thing that holds it back for me is that the Doctor feels a bit distant. The companions share moments with each other in pretty much every episode but the Doctor is rarely involved. If anything, she feels like a teacher chaperoning a school trip rather than part of the family, so my main hope for series 12 would be for there to be more of a connection between the Doctor and her companions. Aside from that, I agree about Yaz, and keeping the way the historicals were used (might be a long shot but I'd be really happy to see a pure historical or two). I'm glad there will be some returning monsters but I hope that any new ones are a bit more interesting than the fairly bland ones from last series. And on more of a structural level I hope more emotional stuff is shown to us rather than a character just talking about something that's already happened off screen (hopefully having 2 parters will help with that).
@UltimateKyuubiFox

Maybe it’s because for me, based on Resolution, using the old stuff is when Chibnall is paradoxically at his most inventive. It feels like he’s the kind of writer who needs an established foundation to comment on and twist to really get his creative juices flowing. If the best his writing can be is based on older monsters and cliffhangers where he has had ideas since he was a kid about how he would make them fresh, that’s more exciting to me. I hope that’s the case. Some people need a baseline to shine, and he seems like that kind of writer so far.

@@lwaves Well we do see that in Series 11. Like in Kerblam, and character wise that worked the best. What I mean is more an episode where we may not even see Graham and Ryan. I was mixed-to-positive on the last series, and there's lots of room for improvement- - We need Thirteen to have her Dalek/School Reunion/Amy's Choice moment, where the episodes and series start to shift and the character gets more complex. Give Whittaker some heavy material to chew on as we know she can. -More stories like Rosa, Demons of the Punjab and It Takes You Away that have balls and take risks. - A story arc. I think Ryan and Graham's development in Series 11 was great but that was to the detriment of a lack of any forward momentum for Thirteen, any really good episodes (except Demons) for Yaz or an arc to keep people watching week by week was poor on Chibnall's part. -IF (and with the Judoon and Cybermen returning it's a WHEN) monsters from the show's past return (I absolutely don't think this has to be a necessity however) make their stories worth the return. Don't just use them for fanservice like Moffat did, give their return some umph like Resolution did to the Daleks. - I don't need every episode to be a Vincent and the Doctor or a Waters of Mars. But try to make the bare minimum quality be something like Kerblam, not deep or complex but just fun (Gatiss, criticise him all you want, was great at this). -Make a truly original, interesting and memorable monster to add to the show's mythos. Tennant had the Ood and Angels, Smith had the Silence and Capaldi was missing one of these. Give Thirteen "her" villain because Tim Shaw is a bit shit. - Absolutely do not let fan demand dictate the direction of the series. This is where last era fell to pieces because Moffat tried to appease the Whoffaldi Tumblr shippers and the show descended into stupid fanfiction. Chibnall should write what works for the characters. - Have a pure historical. It really isn't that hard. If all of these points are addressed, then we should get a great series. I found Series 11 to be a breath of fresh air and a return to the show I loved from 2005-2013 (and Classic Who, of course) but it was FAR from perfect. I don't think it holds a candle to Series 1, 3, 4, 5 or 6 but is about equal with 2 and 10 and far better than 7, 8 and 9. If Chibnall wants to bring back goodwill to people who weren't as lenient as me he needs to take some of these points into consideration. I pretty much agree with all the points here, although I don't really care about the TARDIS needing to be a home all that much.

I honestly think the best route would be to give Yaz a small character arc and then kill her off in the finale (keeping her dead this time) and give 13, Graham, and Ryan more to emotionally tether them together. I like her, I just feel a 4 person Tardis Team is too crowded, only for certain occasions, like Mickey joining jack and rose for an episode or River joining for a few scenes or an episode. They did 4 in classic who but tv has changed and is more character and plot focused now. Also with the familiar elements (I.e recurring monsters, mystery box arcs, two parters) I think they could have pulled it off in a series that wasn’t a fresh start (new doctor, companions, tardis, etc) it would have worked a lot better if they kept at least some those familiar elements in to help us adjust to the fresh slate and then they could have slowly taken some of those elements out for series 12 if they really wanted to experiment with removing those elements.

Stu's video on Voyage of the Damned helped me realize what I loved about Doctor Who, and how it's probably lost forever - the combination of stupid, campy, corny monsters and ideas and jokes... with brutal, cruel death and drama that really hits you. What I want from Series 12: -Classic Monsters -Character Development for The Doctor -Less "happy-go-lucky fun time" for the whole season (It's fine to have fun but when every episode is just a lot of bumbling about it's hard to take the "dark" stuff seriously) -Dark Doctor -Give the TARDIS it's character back (also dislike the design of TARDIS and Sonic but that's just prefrence) -Give Yaz a role -Stop using the Sonic to yadda yadda your way out of things (E.g: The Doctor can just sonic a Dalek's weapons off) -Stop making it feel like SJA (E.g: too kid orientated and too simple solutions, like killing a dalek with a microwave) -Stop underestimating your audience (without going Moffat and overestimating your own writing) -Have The Doctor stop using casual language (This is more a peeve of mine, The Doctor has always spoken in proper English, and now it's all "fam" and "pals" and such) -Don't just have The Doctor be a female and brush it off like it's nothing. It *does* matter that she's changed, and it does need to be addressed in more than a one line joke -Bring *interesting* new monsters/characters. All the S11 monsters are forgetable, do like RTD or Moffat, with Weeping Angels, Silence, even Slitheen -Make the stakes clear. The "series finale" (which just felt like a filler episode) was supposed to have massive stakes, but it didn't feel big at all -Get Segun Akinola to stop writing shit music that a GCSE student could write and get him to use the themes of Murray Gold while still writing his own (instead of just background noise and ambience) *My biggest issue is the music, because I, a 17 year old British Kid who got a C+ in his Music GCSE, can write music to that standard, it's rubbish ambience, Akinola straight ignores Murray Gold's work, which is 10 seasons of solid music that was a constant through the good and bad, and they're just throwing it away. USE MURRAY GOLD'S THEMES but also make your own!!!*

Geniun question... Why a dark Doctor? The Doctor has been dark since the start of the revival, which was caused by the pain and doubt brought by the time war and stuff... Which was a good concept by itself. However, the whole point of the 12th Doctor developement, was that by the end of his era, he went through the pain and doubts, so he could be happier. Jodie is supposed to be this Doctor, one that, for once, would be more positive and happy. One without all the doubts that weighted on all the others Doctor. I would have nothing against the Doctor facing darker moments, especially after this season, but why bring back a dark Doctor again? We already had 4 in just this revival ^^'.

@PikaCinema The BBC has the rights to Murray Gold's musi, and I'm not saying "copy Murray Gold" I'm saying "Use the pre-established themes that we've had for 15 years and dont ditch them in an instant". Akinola can write his own score, but he *has* to use ideas from Murray Gold, there's too much behind Gold's score to just not keep using the themes and ideas. And Ambience is a valid form of music, but what Akinola writes is rubbish, it's about 4 notes in total unless he's feeling adventerous in which case he might use 5. The only good theme he's written is the title sequence, which I feel is the best the show has had since the 2005 revival, it shows he has the capability to write solid music using pre-established ideas, but he's writing at the level of a 14 year old GCSE Music Student

@PikaCinema I'm not saying that his work isn't to the taste of some people, I'm saying it's like if they got somebody different to do the music for the new Star Wars movie and they just didn't use *any* of the themes from the last 8 movies. It's almost an insult that they just come in and decide to ignore it. I'm all for the new take on the score (even if it is easily creatable in 5 minutes in a free software from the first page of google), but they HAVE to aknowledge that there was score before it that matters. Take "This is Gallifrey", it was first used in the Series 3 finale, and has now become the theme for Gallifrey, used all the way up to Series 10. Each theme the show presents has powerful meaning behind each of it and the fact that none if it is every going to be used ever against is almost like taking the character out of the show, it just lacks the fluidity of the past 10 seasons when you take away all that has been build and replace it with wishy washy ambience that doesn't have any memorable themes or ideas

@@Newt.--.Jaeden I totally agree with that, and I liked the developement of the Doctor with that story, but wouldn't that add even more depth to see them move on from that status instead of keeping the same old status quo? Doctor Who is a story about change, growing up, and being the better version of ourselves.

The sonic screwdriver reminds me of Star Trek tricorders. They started off sensible but turned into a prop that was waved around constantly. In TOS Spock would occasionally scan something. By Voyager the whole crew were dependent on them to identify manure.

I'm super happy that one of the first things we learned about Season 12 is that they'll focus more on Yaz I feel like the expansion and updating in the console room will draw more focus to it in this season Chibnall also said that the arc will impact the Doctor more personally and we'll see more impacting her this season The arm thing didn't bother me, but I get the complaint, and it would be nice to have something smaller, yeah. With having two parters and some cold opens, but with plenty of new monsters it seems like it'll balance it out in terms of "dropping everything new and bringing back everything old" I'm honestly looking forward to this season. It seems like it'll be a bigger step back to great stories (versus decent-to-bad stories) and return to "form" in a sense.

I'm very excited for the new season; and you're right about the historical episodes. As a history student, they tend to be my favourite stories and the one I appreciated most last season was actually 'The Witchfinders'. I've studied James I quite a bit and I think they handled his appearance as 'celebrity historical figure' very well--his morals and ideas were opposed to the Doctor's but there was still an appreciation for him being a product of his environment and background. Hopefully, this new series will keep that vibe going.

The thing I really missed in series 11 and have little to no hope of seing in S12 is that charming bit of madness that made the show so different from your regular sci-fi tv-series. I mean, The British Empire travelling through space on a giant whale! Statues that move when nobody watches them! Time paradoxes! Doctor Who was allways as close to "Star Treck meets Wonderland" as it could be as non-one-time gimmick. And then came the guy, who ironically is the screenwriter of an episode called "Dinosaures in Space" (yeah, i know, i know, it was not his own pitch). The guy takes over the show and he just seems to think the time travell itself is enough to call the stories he writes Doctor Who stories. Hope this will change someday.

@PikaCinema I did, yeah. It was the only episode I actually liked in S11 at the time. I've rewatched some of them this year and ended up with two more being at least ok. Nevertheless, Chibnall's run feels clearly too mundane to me. Which is a shame as i like Jody and am absolutely in to the idea of a female Doctor. And even "It takes You Away" itself, while being much closer to the stuff i`m talking about, is... I don`t know... Like Chibs and his crew had consciously decided to make one step less into the "weird" direction rather then go all the way.

I found a lot of what S11 tried to do enjoyable, and I found some of it horrible. There are more of us that are tuning out the ones that want it to fail just so they can get more KZfaq followers, the ones that shout “series 12 is doomed” (real title) before it even begins. I agree with Yaz needing more to do. And I would like to see a bit more of the darker side of the Doctor, the one that told the Dalek “say it to my face”, in Resolution. Maybe explore The Nine Systems that apparently The Stenza have or whatever. I loved how S11 looked so keep that. Either do something with Yaz or, sadly, boot her off the TARDIS. Give us a better sense of The Doc. Stay away from stupid Mystery Box, which we shall see how the whole "something is after the doctor" thing goes. If that's just an episode thing or if it spans.

Yaz definitely needs some purpose apart from just being there as a companion. I'm rewatching the season right now (Xmas Blu-ray) and it really seems like several episodes were written before they decided to make her a police officer, then they didn't change the already written episodes. In particular, when a gun is pointed at her in Arachnids In The UK, there's no way she wouldn't have stated her job at that point. Here's hoping they were saving her arc for the upcoming season, as they had other stuff to deal with last season.

I would actually go one step further with the historical episodes and say they should have some that don’t even have aliens. It’s what they did during William Hartnell’s era, and more often than not, it worked. I actually preferred the ones that didn’t have a historical figure. I also want to see more episodes like “It Takes you Away” that have a stranger concept. Oh, and about the two parters; they’re going to have to come back if we’re keeping four members of the Tardis crew. One of the reasons we didn’t get more character development is because every episode was self-contained.

I agree with generally most of your points. For me when they announced the historic episodes I was worried it could be too preachy. Classic who at it's time was good at educating while still entertaining and worried the format wouldn't work as well today. So I was glad when they announced the historics would have a scifi twist. Yet this was the worst part in my opinion with the historics. It felt like the scifi elements where just tacked on like they had the historic idea first and forced a scifi element on top of it. I do now think a pure historic could work and would love to see one. As for the companions I do believe the tardis is crowded and sadly Yaz is the weakest link which is odd as being a police officer should work great for a companion but it's never really used. My only problem is I've yet to really find that 13 moment. I don't know if it's the writing or Jodie. Sometimes I've felt shes been playing too much Matt Smith and david Tennant without her own spin but this isn't helped by the fact the show didn't get a lot of time to focus on her. I'd love to see a standalone doctor episode to really showcase 13. I did kind of miss the returning monsters/villains in series 11. It was generally a spoiler free series with a lot of it tight lipped so I thought a surprise return would have been good slap bang in the middle of the series. Kind of a shock surprise to the audience and a way to remind them it's the same show. Series 11 just felt a bit bland to me. I do agree though the answer is not bringing everything back. What we need is balance. I did love how at one point each new series reintroduced us to a redesign of a classic monster and I'd love them to keep doing that if possible

Great commentary. I pretty much agree with most of your comments except for the one about the sonic screwdriver. For me it's a MAJOR problem (not a minor one). I absolutely hate her big waving arm-arc whenever she uses it. It's so annoying that it interrupts the story for me because I can't help thinking, "Oh ****, here she goes again." Actually, I'd love it if they got rid of the sonic altogether. I know it'll never happen because of merchandizing but it's such a crutch now. It's pretty much a Star Trek tricorder.

The lack of two parters annoyed me most. It’s like, if you need twice the run time to tell a good story, then use twice the run time! Rather than trying to cram everything into one (because Chibnall REALLY struggles to end his stories, it’s like Climax then The End) use the extra time to develop side characters so we can *feel* for them when they inevitably die

My hopes: 1)Better writing of the episodes - Writing was shocking TBH 2)A darker more emotional series (for me the best series and episodes of dr.who have been the darker ones) 3)A darker doctor which feels the full emotion of her past and not glances over it and really feels emotion 4)Less overly political correctness - yes don't be offensive but it became too much the other way. Usually if there was a female and male character the male would be weaker or meaner and it became cringey (this is from a female perspective) 5)BETTER NAMED THINGS - like wtf was that about "pting" "kerblam" "battle of raskavor thingy" "Tim Shaw" like omfg what 6)A story arc - Bad wolf,Missing planets, The crack and memory loss etc... allowed you to feel the series more but not that rope thing that killed people last series but come on 😂😂 7)Music - love the theme tune however the older themes for the older characters were beautiful Long list but I feel that's how my favourite series went x
