A fatality further south causes timetable chaos at Retford, East Coast Main Line

12/08/2016. The day didn't go as planned! The plan was to spend a couple of hours at Retford station, mainly to film a track maintenance machine that was due to leave the up sidings, run through the up platform, cross back onto the down platform, and then head north. It didn't move! And, after a couple of other trains, nothing else moved!
The first clip shows the 1E05 Edinburgh to Kings Cross HST passing Retford on time. Just south of Newark, the train was involved in a fatality causing everything to be stopped. The 1Y82 York to Kings Cross arrived in Retford 6 minutes down and was then held in the platform for another 200 minutes.
In the end, I stayed filming for 5 hours to record the story when, first of all the northbound services started to move, and then, once the 1E05 was able to be moved, things started to head south again. Near the end of the video, the HST involved in the incident is seen heading back to Craigentinny as the 5F05 14:35 Grantham to Craigentinny T.&R.S.M.D empty stock train.
I hope I have managed to correctly identify each service.

Apart from the tragic fatality, I am surprised at the number of HST trains being used to operate services totally under the wires. That cannot be good practice for many reasons. Thanks for posting this. Beautiful day. Must have been the day we had summer that year!

Understood. What was really aiming at was the practice of, for example, using HSTs for Leeds to London trains. Looked again at the video - what a beautiful summer day!

These services may have run services into Leeds from the North where they terminate, before running south to London. Because the line north of Leeds until York is not under wires, HSTs are required for these services

There’s certainly an Aberdeen-Leeds service, which has to use HSTs (no wires on the northern hundred plus miles!) - presumably it makes more sense to timetable those HSTs to continue to KGX rather than returning north and using a 91 set for the southern route at the moment. I imagine that if they had more 91 sets available they’d use those instead, but there’s only a fixed number, and won’t always be in the right place and time - at least until they start swapping over to Azumas later this year, which will be more flexible and also allow some short term shuffling (maybe freeing up more 91s to displace HSTs in some routes?)

@@agent_605 Hi Alistair. The Leeds to Aberdeen, and Aberdeen to Leeds services are a standalone service. They don't operate to, or from King's Cross. The Aberdeen to Leeds terminated there, then headed straight to Nevle Hill depot for overnight servicing. No regular services from Edinburgh, or Newcastle to King's Cross, or vice-versa was booked to run via Leeds. The HST's were used on fully electrified services simply because there wasn't enough Class 91 electrics to fill the modern timetable. There main duty was to operate services which had a none-electrified portion.

Duncan Bhaltair Eanraig Wilson However, the following morning the HST has to go somewhere and usually ends up on a Leeds-London service. Also, services from Hull, Sunderland, Harrogate etc will end up running other services between the once a day services to these destinations, which usually means operating entirely electrified services, e.g most of the day the Hull HST operated on Leeds services

This is mad, I was due to go to a job interview in Grantham from Newark on this day and I had to call them up and say I couldn't get there due to a fatality on the line

Error A day is 1440 minutes, so that means if a train was 2190 minutes late it would be a day and a half

Excellent video and clear captions as the morning unfolded. You did well to hang in there and thanks for your time and effort putting this together for us all.I appreciate the tragedy of the fatality, but the "everything must stop, total lockdown" mentality of Network Rail and the BTP really is OTT.We should look at the much more practical approach of our close European railways, where getting the trains running again is the top priority. Many of their lines have mile after mile with nothing but a grass strip separating the rail from the public. They have a common sense approach - It is a railway, walk on to it and you will get killed! - end of...

I was on an Eurocity train in Germany that had hit a person passing through a station. The procedure was similar.

The total lockdown is so they can recover all the bits. It's grim but if you get hit by a train at speed you don't stay in one piece! So they have to shut all running lines so those doing recovery can avoid being hit by passing trains.

You'd rather have crew later on finding bits and peaches? Whether on the track or on a sindings facility, that's unacceptable.

Surprised there's still a "Class 373 Stop" sign given they last ran on the line over a decade ago

Quick tutorial on "its" and "it's". "It's" means "it is". "Its" means "belonging to it"and is the only exception to rule that "possession is indicated with apostrophe-S". "Its'", with the apostrophe at the end of the word, does not exist and is just plain wrong in all circumstances.

this is what happens when you commit suicide, extreme delays and potential cancellations. To anyone reading this, if you ever feel that life is better off without you, you should see this as an example of the aftermath. No matter how terrible you feel life is treating you, you should NEVER see suicide as a solution to your problems.
