When Cuba Gooding Jr., and Tom Cruise performed together about 4 years later (in Jerry Maguire), they really had good chemistry in the film. It's one of my favorites. I can't remember but I think Cuba won an Oscar for that role.

This film is inspired by the true events surrounding the death of PFC William Alvarado. The sister of the author, Aaron Sorkin, was a lawyer assigned to the case. Things only got deeper years later when one of the defendants was mysteriously murdered.

2:57, the actor playing a Captain right here is John M. Jackson. A few years after this movie he played another Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer on the show JAG. On JAG he played the head off the whole JAG corps for the US Navy. JAG was created by veteran producer Donald Bellisario who had seen Top Gun and this movie. He thought to himself "What if Tom Cruise's characters in both these movies were the same person". So the show JAG was created in which the main character Harmon Rabb was a former US Navy aviator who stops flying and becomes a Navy lawyer or JAG officer. Its was a wild concept but the actors really sold it. The show ran for 10 years and spawned the NCIS franchise which follows the exploits of criminal investigators who work cases for the US Navy.

Following orders isn't an excuse if it was an illegal order. You can choose to not follow an illegal order...but you better be right (and able to prove it)! Really hard in the military to NOT follow an order, because the whole structure is about following orders. If somebody gave you an illegal order, I'm willing to bet they won't say it was an illegal order you refused. Kind of a no win for the two marines.

VH Col Jessup had forgotten the Marine Corps Code of Honor; Honor: This is the bedrock of a Marines character. It is the quality that empowers Marines to exemplify the ultimate in ethical and moral behavior: to never lie, cheat, or steal; to abide by an uncompromising code of integrity; to respect human dignity; and to have respect and concern for each other. From what someone said, Sorkin (who wrote the story) likes to have the villain believe he is in the right. A villain like in Batman movies knows he is the villain, but Sorkin likes to change that up. In this movie, Jessup - the villain - didn't think he was a villain, and thought he was doing the right thing.
@TSIRKLAND

True. Although, of course, he knew that what he did could get him in trouble, hence the cover-up and the lies. If he truly thought that what he did was 100% right, and that others would recognize that, he would have had no reason to cover it up. But even though he felt he was justified in his own mind, there was a part of him that was fully aware that what he did went against the rules, and he tried to cover his ass, and ended up getting his ass handed to him.

@TSIRKLAND

@@joshuarepko-cy2xu Jessup was a hero? Tragic or otherwise, how could you possibly defend him as any kind of hero? Colonel Jessup: the guy who ordered a code red against a soldier with medical issues, that soldier died because of those actions, and then the commanding officer Jessup covered up the crime, and was going to allow two low-ranking Marines to take the fall for HIS orders. This is a tragic hero, in your mind? You "don't know" whether he was right or wrong? I can't tell whether the emoji at the end is supposed to be a "that was sarcasm" smiley, or not. He considers what he did the right thing, in his own egotistical mind. But we in the audience can see how much harm and loss of life it caused, and how unnecessary it was, and how selfish and cowardly he was. Please tell me you're being sarcastic.

The doctor was negligent in missing Santiago's medical condition because he assumed Santiago was faking his symptoms. If the doctor had performed his duty free of bias Santiago would have received a medical discharge. As for following orders, Marines and other military personnel have a moral and legal duty to disobey unlawful orders..... of course that's easier said than done because as is the case with any other workplace, culture often supersedes the rules, policies, and even the law within the military.
@pirbird14

It's not always easy to disobey illegal orders when everyone else is doing it. Did you see "Casualties of War", which is also based on a trues story? The situation there is a bit different, as the incident took place when the squad was out in the filed, where the individual squad members' lives depend on getting along with the other squad members.

I don't believe the doctor was negligent in Santiago's condition because the doctor himself said it was poison that killed him. If that had been the case, he should have been able to identify the poison. He said that lactic acid was sped up by the mysterious poison. It was aluded to that the doctor had been manipulated and willingly purgered himself to protect Jessup and his cronies. I'm sure Jessup would eventually pin this on the doctor to salvage his career.

Similar in Platoon. Or imagine being a German soldier in Nazi Germany. You know it is wrong, but you were ordered and if you refuse you may be killed as well. But as Dawson realized, the whole point of being a marine soldier was to fight to protect people who could not fight for themselves. Sometimes that is dying fighting the enemy, sometimes that is dying fighting the enemy within your own army.

Great reaction. I love how sharp you are, picking up on details. The film is partly based on a true story. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the film, has a sister, Deborah, who is a lawyer. She served 3 years in the JAG Corp. and was tasked with defending a group of marines accused of assaulting a fellow marine (code red). The case wasn't so graphic in real-life, the marine did not die. But you can see the basis of that story in the film. Daniel is based in part on his sister Deborah. Great film with amazing performances, especially Nicholson as Col. Jessup.

This movie is a grear example of doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. Cpl Dawson explains this in the first interview..."if the actions I took have consequences, I'll accept them." That distinguished his character from that of Col Jessup and Lt Kendrick, who were both unwilling to accept responsibility for their own actions and set up their subordinates to take the fall for their own failures.

I am German, 62 years old. After the end of the Second World War, too many German soldiers, SS and others, claimed to have only obeyed one order. In the Nuremberg trials it was established that following orders that clearly constitute a crime is clearly not legally protected. LCPL Harold W. Dawson realized this clearly in the end. But it remains that he is a man of absolute integrity.

Sam wasn’t wearing cologne or perfume it was just a joke. Tom Cruise was talking to Demi Moore but when she said “Really?” He saw his opportunity to pretend he was talking to Sam for comedic effect because he did use the term “perfume” to describe the fragrance. The filmmakers assumed that the audience would get the joke since Tom Cruise throughout the entire movie tried to make a joke of everything.

@BuccWylde
@BuccWylde 5 ай бұрын
As a military veteran, i can tell you that military personnel can definitely refuse to act on an order if they deem that order can cause unnecessary harm or be to the detriment of any person or persons. This film was from the early 90s and even by then, hazing was strictly forbidden in all U.S. branches of the military. There may have been instances where soldiers took matters into their own hands, but if a superior was found to have given them such an order, that person would be in serious trouble. The two marines were dishonorably discharged because the jury believed they didn't exercise sound judgement and went through with what was an unlawful order. Jessup and Kendrick were arrested at the end and now would have to go on trial themselves. They most likely wouldn't be convicted of murder but because they lied about the order, it clearly constitutes conspiracy to cover up a crime. Since the code red order was intentional, both would most likely be found guilty of voluntary manslaughter among other charges like conspiracy, perjury, conduct unbecoming, etc. Both Jessup and Kendrick would definitely be spending a hefty term in prison.

This was a really good reaction, I enjoyed this a lot. Just a quick point to be made - you asked how Santiago got into the marines when he has a heart condition. This is something that actually happens all the time unfortunately. When people join the military, they give you a physical, but as long as you pass the physical you can get in. They don't necessarily go through your entire medical history except to ask if you've had certain conditions which would keep you out. But if you have never been diagnosed with anything and don't know that you have a heart condition, there's no way for them to know that. I served in the US Air Force for 20 years, but I was diagnosed with asthma as an adult, after I had already been serving for 14 years. They don't let you in the military if you have a diagnosis of asthma, but I never knew I had that before joining at 19 years old. So people with medical conditions slip through the cracks all the time.

Sam’s disdain for Dawson and Downey can certainly be interpreted as something personal; but I think he just truly believes they’re at fault for Santiago’s death. In the final scene where Dawson acknowledges their mistakes, you can see the respect in Sam’s eyes and a sort’ve “maybe I was wrong” look

The lines where you only see the back of the Jack Nicholson's head, are impersonations of him done by the actor playing "Weinstein, the third of trio of lawyers working on the case together. They wanted to change some lines after Nicholson's work on the film was complete, and he gave permission to let the actor, Kevin Pollack, also a comedian known for impersonations, do the lines.

If you want Tom Cruise's greatest performance, you'd be doing yourself a huge favor watching Magnolia (1999), directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the absolute finest directors in American cinema. Now, Jack Nicholson's greatest performance, for my money, is in The Last Detail (1973). Of all the incredible roles he's chosen over the years, he really shines in that film. I can't exactly explain why, but he's a force of nature in that film.

Yes ladies, PLEEEZZ, 'Magnolia' (1999)! One of my fave movies ever, & someone needs to start a trend of reactors reacting to it! Absolutely fantastic movie! ⚜️

@@deepermind4884I've been all over reaction videos trying to find any excuse I can to suggest ANY Paul Thomas Anderson films because so few reactors do outside of maybe There Will Be Blood. Magnolia is definitely my favorite, and an overwhelming emotional rollercoaster that is stunning in every conceivable way.

I enjoyed your reaction to A Few Good Men. - But one thing you ladies did not seem to realize during your reaction was, in the military, soldiers have a right and a responsibility to refuse an illegal order. The Code Red was an illegal order. They should have refused that order. Yes, they would have had to suffer a temporary punishment for refusing an order. But they would not have been Dishonorably Discharged from the military. Which is what they said in the movie was the most important thing to them. - You ladies are correct about the character Kernel Jessup. He let his power go to his head. He thought he knew better than everybody else. - But you two were wrong in your summation to say those two Marines got all the blame and punishment. They said in the movie both Jessup and Kendrick got arrested also, after the trial. But I still really enjoyed your reaction video.

We know the two marines didn’t get all the blame. We were just trying to say it would be sad if that had happened which is why we were happy that accountability was forced onto jessup because he is the one who gave the order. Glad you enjoyed 💜

There's a lot of scary things like this in the military. My brothers are veterans (I come from a big military family). The military system in the US is really scary. There are many in leadership who are like Jessup. Some people go into the military with that mindset, and some develop it. It's sad because there are good service members in the military who deserve better. The military itself generally ignores, condones, and/or does not punish bad behavior. They also dismiss or neglect severe physical and mental health issues in order to keep people active-duty. They don't want soldiers to leave mandatory service early, or the military to have to pay extra benefits if someone is disabled. I've heard true horror stories. I've seen other comments mention this film was inspired by PFC William Alvarado, but there are other similar cases. Higher-ranking people are almost never punished, and when they are, it is not nearly what they should justifiably receive. That's not even mentioning the often immoral recruiting tactics the military uses. If you're looking to react to something lighter, from this time, may I suggest "A League of Their Own" film.

A Few Good Men is an awesome movie and I'm glad that you reacted to it. My only complaint, and it's not with you , is that lots of content creators have reacted to this movie but ignore older classics. I hope you check out Murder In the First, another courtroom drama, also with Kevin Bacon.

Hot take: I think Tom Cruise peaked early in his career. His roles were more versatile back then. Now he only does action roles with little performance variations.

32:36 "However, when it's an order". You're right, Ryl, it's different when it's an order. It can put the person receiving the order in a sorry situation. But do you know what we heard from the Nazis during the Nuremberg Trials for crimes against humanity after WW II? Their excuse for doing the horrible things they did in the concentration camps to Jews and other "undesirable" citizens was "we were only following orders". Growing up in the 50's, when the Holocaust was fresh on everyone's minds, I understood that "following orders" is no excuse for doing something that is morally, and sometimes legally, wrong. Even in the military. In our military you are not required to follow an unlawful order. However, deciding which orders are "unlawful" is tricky, because not all orders you don't like, or personally don't agree with, are unlawful. You're advised to seek legal advice. Obviously, you may not be in a position, or have time, to seek legal advice. Like I said, an unlawful order can very easily put the person receiving a questionable order in a very bad situation. Thanks for letting us watch a great movie with you, and for your wonderful reactions! God bless you!

Facts. At the end of the day it is a choice and everyone needs to be accountable for their actions. Dawson and his colleague did the action and it resulted in Santiago’s death. Dawson realized in the end what they did wrong. Which is why in the end when we were discussing we stated it’s sad they took orders and didn’t second guess or question it. But I guess that’s because Dawson didn’t want to receive another low grade/report for not following orders. I guess we could say that was selfish of him and it resulted in someone’s death. We appreciate you watching along with us 💜
