Some of the best gardens in the world use shades of green and texture more than anything else

@@JimPutnam Green is my favorite color. I love shades of green. And I have a mild obsession with green flowers as well. I have green tulips, green echinacea, green ball dianthus and I even have a green peony (Green Lotus).

I have been working on my shade garden, slowly, for the past few years. I have a lady in red fern next to a begonia grandis and a japanese maple. It is very subtle, but the red tips of the maple , the red stems of the fern and the pinkish-red back of the begonia blend so well together, it is so beautiful. I actually bought a few more of the ferns today to add to the area.

I have the painted fern and absolutely love them, they don’t seem to spread which I’m okay with, but I have divided them and they handle it fine.

I cut back all my hardy ferns during March when their leaves look brown & tattered. I’m seeing some of their fronds peeking up. Can’t wait to see them all full in. My garden looks empty without them since I planted them in drifts.

I love ferns. My favorite thing is the way they unfurl themselves. I know you had a cool close-up picture on your subscriber photos last week. They aren't the easiest thing to grow here in our hot, dry summer climate. They require some special area in the yard, often the North side of the house or under a tree. We persevere because they are so lovely. I have two Japanese painted ferns which I have had for years. They don't ever get very large, but they are beautiful nonetheless. I have some other plain green hardy ferns (no idea what variety) that I bought from a nearby garden enthusiast who said they came from his mom's yard and that they were very hardy. He was right! They have reliably come back for about 4 years now. I wouldn't mind if they got larger and spread some.

A friend is bringing me an autumn fern and a a Japanese painted lady fern to add to my garden tomorrow. I can't wait! After this video, next on my wish list is a lady in red fern. I had never seen them before.

Perhaps Heuchera and Lenton Rose might be a good sub for Hosta if you are worried about deer resistance. Alternatively you can try Liquid Fence. It seems to work as it smells like garlic, urea and bad eggs. Yuck. I wish it were not so expensive though. I apply it after every rain to my Hosta mainly for Voles.

Older video really came in handy for my garden planning for 2024 Jim. I have a raised deck about 27 feet length facing North with large pine trees within 10 feet of this area. I was searching for something that could be evergreen below the deck that wouldn't need much maintenance and minimal sun. Further from the deck under the huge pines I recently planted Autumn Twist azaleas, this area because its a few feet away from the deck it gets more morning to noon sunlight. I also have some cast iron plants facing the same direction, but these are up against my house along with a Acuba and hostas. At 65 I love to garden still but need to keep the maintenance to a minimum. Now just to break it up a bit , plan on a few evergreen shrubs for full shade so I don't have a 27 ft runway of Holly ferns. Any Ideas?? btw I am local Rocky Mount NC so 7b border to 8 now.

Only ones I find ornamental enough are, (what I know them as) 'foxtail'. Many ferns are hard to remove--- They seems to eat glyphosate like its nitrogen

I'm new to landscape gardening, so don't blast me to bad on these next few questions. I have no shade near my house. I do have 5 acres of woods. Is there any ferns that like full sun? If I planted ferns on the edge or inside the wood line would they survive? What would be some good plants I could use as a border for a walkway to a creek? The woods block out about 50% of the sun. I teeter on the edge of zone 7a & 7b NC and SC border.
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 жыл бұрын
There are no bad questions here ever. There are a few ferns that will take more sun including the shield fern in this video, but most prefer part shade. The edge of the woods should be fine. I have a playlist on my channel called shade plants. If you go through that playlist it should give you some ideas.

@@JimPutnam this weekend I'll go on a HortTube video marathon and see how much the wife will let me spend. If I take her out for a crab dinner I think I can talk her into a fern garden. Anywho thanks for the info on where to get more info👍

What would be a good fern to grow for the floral trade in zone 7a SE, that is large and vigorous?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know in zone 7. Leatherleaf fern is the one florist use and it is zone 9 to 11. Not sure how the others hold up when cut.
