5 min in and thank you for being vulnerable enough to talk about this. I have been going through a similar situation this winter and have had to pack up my apt 3 times so far (fingers crossed it’s done). I totally relate to the overwhelmed feelings of the prep involved! ❤

Sorry about the fumigation and all that goes with that. As far as Bennett and traveling, cats are territorial and like routine. When you take them out of their 'safe place' they get stressed. When you travel with them, same thing, stressed. And once they are adults, unless they are raised with other cats, they don't like to be around other cats. Again, territorial and very stressful for them. I've had cats all my life and right now have 3. The best thing for Bennett is to keep him at home, and have others come in to care for him if you need to be away. I know this time couldn't be avoided, but I'm sure you want what's best for him. Hope your apartment if bug free now. HUGS!

I had them years ago. I’m spotless, so people were shocked that I had them. They don’t discriminate. They leave little black marks (like if you dabbed your sheets with permanent marker). They can go two years without a meal. We are sure I got mine from a moving truck with the blankets they provide for padding. Sorry girl. It is stressful.

This would be a good opportunity to make organize with me content and to put the whole place back together or a spring cleaning

I'm pretty sure by NYC law your landlord is supposed to take care of this.Usually multiple apartments are done at the same time.

I’ve had them in 2013. I think in total there were three treatments (to catch the egg cycles). The prep was a nightmare (clothes, bedding, curtains all had to be washed, dryed & bagged), everything off the walls. The exterminators drilled small holes at the bottom of the walls in each room & shot in diatomaceous earth which dries out the bugs’ exoskeleton and then they die. It worked but I was too freaked out over the whole thing so my lease was up in a couple months anyway so I was out there after that. My arms looked like I had pink polka dots on them which were the bites.

I am in pest control. Bed bugs can hide & you won’t see. It’s best to get it done. Better safe than sorry. I’ve stayed in that hotel. It’s awesome.

I had bedbugs:( I threw away almost everything I own and moved.... then I fumigated my new place with all my things. Also you have to wash your clothes all of them even the ones you don't wear at a certain temperature to kill them.not to make things worse... but it's a big process to get rid of them for good:( I'm so sorry this is happening... it's part of living in an apartment with others living there cuz you can't control how your neighbors live.

Get your encasement plastic sheets for box spring and bed now.Put multiple sheets down.

Sounds like an overly cautious response to the situation but honestly I would’ve done the same thing. One bug can turn into 100 in the blink of an eye. At least now you can rest assured knowing you did everything you could’ve done. You did a great job.

Oh man! That sucked! But thank you for sharing all aspects with us, even the not-so-fun parts! Also Bennett is adorable! I used to travel with my male cat, when I was young and single lol, he was my world, and a great travel companion. It does suck about them getting litter everywhere at hotels and stuff, but you have to maybe put a mat or a towel or something down underneath the disposable litter box... New subscriber here! I know you’re past this crazy time but just wanna let you know I also had a bed bug issue during this time. Never got bit but we found a few lives ones throughout the apartment. The exterminator came and sprayed but we never needed to get fumigated. Only the apartments that were infested. I can’t believe they made you fumigate without even checking for bugs!! But better safe than sorry - I’m glad this crazy time is over for you! ❤️

I'm familiar with services that bring a beagle stiffer dog. Sounds like you're paying for this yourself. If you have bugs likely other apts may also. Landlord should pay for all of this.

Bed bugs is definitely a normal thing. Back in 2020 I was waking up in the mornings with welts on my arms that I couldn't trace until I finally saw a bug after about two weeks. My family's house was on the market and they had literally accepted an offer the day before. It was a nightmare to pack up the entire house (5 adults' worth of everything) in one weekend. The exterminator that treated the house believed that the bed bugs ended up in my room during a showing when someone set down a purse/jacket/etc. Thankfully the buyer was super understanding and still closed on the house a month later. It's rough during the process but I promise it will get better in the aftermath. Hopefully everything will be over as soon as possible so that you can return to your normal activities❤

City living, apartment living- bugs happen. I went through it with an 87 year old relative who brought the bugs home from some place that they visited.

Had bed bugs in 2016. The worst experience of my life. SF Chronicle even did a story on it. Hope your journey is better than mine.

Hi Alexis. I've been thru this with roaches. My landlord hired an exterminator and I think your landlord should have done the same. I'm so sorry you had to go thru all these but like you said it's more common than ppl think. I was told to get a spray bottle pour rubbing alcohol and spray your bed every time you change your sheets/also spray under sink areas and that will keep the bugs away/ kill them. I've been doing that and I think it works. And BTW Bennett is so so cute 😺.

I could tell from the way you packed your stuff it was bed bugs. I've been there and done that and it was the most hellish things I ever went through, and it was weeks long, and expensive as hell. I've been paranoid ever since.
