In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between ten and twenty minutes usually. But sometimes a project needs a little MORE than just a few minutes... so in A Few (More) Minutes of Fun, you'll be invited along for a deeper dive into my creative process.
Today I'm playing with collage composition using a few of my favourite things - rusty wire, Distress Ink backgrounds, dried flower stems and Tim Holtz ephemera and die-cuts. I love working in pairs and trios and series, and this video follows my thought process as I balance my collage composition so that the elements are "in conversation" with one another.
This pair of tags developed in a more detailed way than I thought they would, so today's video is longer than the usual fifteen minutes. In the final shots, I have also inked the edges of the tags and spattered some white paint droplets.
Products used include:
Tim Holtz Idea-ology ephemera - Photobooth, Snippets Curator and Number Strips, Layers, Small Talk Stickers
Tim Holtz Sizzix Wildflowers Thinlits
Rusty wire
Dried Aquilegia/Columbine/Granny's Bonnet seedheads from my garden
Golden Gesso
For the tag backgrounds, see A Few Minutes of Fun - flipping stencils with Distress Spray Stains • A few minutes of fun.....
I bought (or foraged!) all of the products used in this video myself.
The music at the end is by William King on www.pixabay.com - a collection of royalty-free music downloads.

I love your narrative. Projects do speak to us, they share feelings with us. Colors and items can evoke feelings and memories for us. I do love creativity in all forms. When I am working on whatever craft of the moment, I remind myself "it isn't always about the finished piece, remember to enjoy the process".

I couldn't agree more - I'm always process-oriented rather than product-oriented... In my theatre work too, I always enjoy rehearsals more than performances! And a big yes to the evocation of feelings and memories and the unexpected stories which bubble up as you are creating. Thank you so much for your lovely, thoughtful comment.

What a lovely comment, thank you... I certainly wouldn't be interested in "eh"!! Colour is such a personal thing... it's hard to say how my colour preferences came about, but they've always been pretty clear to me, right from the start of my visual creative journey. I suppose the simple answer is "nature"... always my muse in colour terms, as well as shapes (I prefer organic to geometric). And then I mostly like to work in the cool end of the colour palette - there's maybe a touch of melancholy about it that appeals in the same way that I prefer music in a minor key to major (almost always). My palette is also very seasonal... so come autumn you'll find everything turns rust, gold, brown, orange. It's pretty much the only time you'll find orange in my work, but for those months, it's there all the time... I prefer to think of it as "burnished rust"! And for the berries I often paint (and which have made their way onto lots of my stamp designs for PaperArtsy), red is allowed... so again, nature has her way, even though red is not a colour I reach for otherwise. As far as what I grab while I'm actually working - I don't know whether I can bring that to a conscious process. I look at the piece in front of me and wait until I understand what it needs next. Sometimes that will be a contrast, sometimes something in harmony. It happens somewhere deep in the heart/gut/imagination... I hope this long answer has something useful in it for you somewhere!

@@w0rdsandp1ctures so enlightening! Makes total sense. I used to be a primary color person- taught little ones for so many years. But now I find earth tones more appealing. One of favorites will always be Paynes Grey. Thank you for your answer🖌️
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures 26 күн бұрын
So interesting that shift from primaries to earth tones. That's definitely somewhere I'm happy too. And a big YES to Payne's Grey. In fact, all tones of grey... Pumice Stone is probably my most used Distress Ink; I have a beautiful French Grey by American Journey watercolours; Art to Basic have some pale, medium and dark Olives which are basically versions of grey, which I love; my Daniel Smith Payne's Grey and Payne's Blue Grey are always having to be topped up; and I just recently indulged myself by getting a couple of the D.S. designer greys too!

I love your tags so much. What do you do with them all though? Do you ever make larger - like card size?
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures 3 ай бұрын
I really don't make cards - I don't know why not, I just don't (or at least it's vanishingly rare!). But you could easily layer these over other painted or decorative papers to create a card. I use them as gift tags, or frame them as pairs or - for the most part - keep them on display in small crates to flip through for inspiration or for pleasure. (You can see some of what I mean in my KZfaq Shorts.) And these are already quite large, actually - easily card-sized. They are mainly about the process, though, not the end product. I find tags an economical and stress-free place to play and experiment, to learn and grow as a creator and artist. Some people use journals (and I do that too!), but tags are quick and simple when time is short.

Happy you found your way here and thank you for your lovely words. Really the point of tags for me is the making of them, not what happens afterwards. It's about the process, the creative journey, learning, discovering, growing - playing with products and with composition. It's a substrate where I feel free to play without pressure, and since they are small you don't need much time to come to a happy completion. And then absolutely those ideas, techniques, colour combinations, compositional habits become part of other artworks... journals, handmade books, paintings, altered art - I do a lot of different stuff... you can see more on Instagram @w0rdsandp1ctures instagram.com/w0rdsandp1ctures/ For the tags themselves, they might end up as part of art journal pages, or occasionally a card-topper (though I really don't make cards much); they can be framed just as they are for display, either alone or in a series (I often create in pairs or trios or quartets or sets) or hung up; they can be used as bookmarks or as tags (which they are!) to decorate a gift. Lots of them live in little crates and baskets in my studio, for flipping through for inspiration or to show visitors what I get up to. You can see what I mean here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e92bqdCEuLHakmg.html That's a long answer, but I hope it helps! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Have a great Sunday.

I love the natural elements on the tag. What do you do with the tags after making?

Some I keep in little wooden crates to flick through for inspiration. Some go on pinboards or shelves. Some go into boxes. Maybe some day some will be for sale at a craft fair or online outlet, but that's another whole step of organisation - and I've got more than ten years' worth of them to sort through in that case! Thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated.

They're not actually stamped - I made them in the stencil-flipping video which is linked in the description... you can find it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nqdgbKuUv7vUlmQ.html Hope you enjoy it!

Happy you like them... and no worries at all about asking the question. Answer one - what is any art used for?!? Answer two - there are lots of ways you could use them. You could easily layer these over other painted or decorative papers to create a card. I sometimes use them as gift tags, or frame them (as pairs, or trios or whatever I've created them as). These are quite large, actually - easily card-sized, so you could use them as a card just as they are. Flat tags can be bookmarks. But for the most part - I keep them on display in small crates to flip through for inspiration or for pleasure. (You can see some of what I mean in my KZfaq Shorts.) They are mainly about the process, not the end product. I find tags an economical and stress-free place to play and experiment, to learn and grow as a creator and artist. Some people use journals (and I do that too!), but tags are quick and simple when time is short. So they are a learning tool. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
