Lol! I had to laugh on the whipping cream also! My dog, Humphrey Bogart, KNOWS what that can is when he sees it, KNOWS what that sound is when he is in another room and Hears it being shook and he comes running, stops with a skid and starts begging! And yes, he knows to open his mouth! Aren't they just the smartest?❤

I heard somewhere that a full refrigerator is more efficient. If yours isn't, fill it with jugs of water. I guess the water helps keep it cold so that you're not cooling empty space. I need to try it!

I checked out a meter reader from my utilities company so I could read how much electricity each of my appliances use when turned off. Some surprises: when not in use, my printer & washing machine still use electricity. Same with the humidifier, electric clothes dryer, & desktop computer. Solution? Purchased inexpensive power strip for my office and turn it off when I'm not in that room. Purchased inexpensive single plug inserts with on off switch for each 120 v appliance and switch that appliance off at the plug when not in use. The dryer I simply unplug the whole unit it when I'm done with my laundry. My energy usage has gone down!

Husband and I sold our massive 3000+ sq.ft. home 3 years ago in the early spring and lived in a motor home in a GREAT campground with a pool. Did laundry in the campground laundromat once per week, used the pool daily, and used their honor system library full of DVDs, CDs, and books/magazines. The Yearly Fee was $1500. Water/sewer/electric was included! We were there from April - November 1. We wouldn't have left and stayed until December if it hadn't been for the frigid Michigan winters. Ended up finding a small 2 bed 1 bath home with 1/2 acre in town, fenced for our German Shepherd. Should anything happen to my husband, I will be sorely pressed to find housing that will allow for a large breed dog, and I can't manage the house expenses and all the overhead on my income. These ideas are FANTASTIC for someone like me. If anything happens to Hubby, I know that I can DEFINITELY lower the monthly cost with your suggestions which could buy me some time to find another place to live.

I saved PG&E expenses this winter by doing three long cat sits in friends' homes. I recently began drying my clothes in increments of 10 minutes heat followed by the dryer's automatic cycle of ten minutes of cool down. Once the clothes are no longer dripping wet, I hang everything on a wooden drying rack set in the bathtub and on hangers suspended from an additional spring-loaded bathroom curtain rod positioned over the bathtub. Decades ago, during a drought, I switched to washing up or showering at night, to minimize how often I need to wash my bed linens. I've also implemented several tips from your videos showing how we can save energy costs, for which I am grateful!

I saw on another program, the “ten percent rule”: every few months, brainstorm ways that you can cut each bill by 10 percent. You wouldn’t believe how much you can reduce your bills, even after you think they are already as reduced as they can get. Then, once you’ve incorporated those new strategies, brainstorm AGAIN a few months later, on MORE WAYS to reduce them by 10 percent. Small changes add up!

Wow your power is almost as high as mine in the UK. I have no heating, no boiler, no dishwasher nor washing machine or dryer, not even a telephone, though I do own a television which I watch for an hour or so most days. My bill this month was £239! It's completely insane in the UK now, with the rich getting richer and the poor being ground into the dirt. We can't even make a profit on solar - the government takes it. :/ PS Oh my gosh your doggies are too too cute. 🥰

Hey PP, be careful constantly turning your electric off at the breakers. Breakers aren't meant to be used daily and will break, which can be costly to repair. We had a hard time finding the breaker style and brand we needed when one of ours went out (not common manufacturer.) Thanks for the tips though. Would love to see you do a "solar for dummies 101" video, just in how to set up a basic system beyond using generators.

Refrigerators require clearance on the sides, in the back and above, otherwise they get hot, and stay on all day. My wife put a broom and a mop next to out fridge and a bunch of stuff on top recently. A few days ago, I heard the fridge running forever, and saw what she had done. I moved the stuff away, and within 10 minutes, the fridge shut off and stayed off. I keep telling my wife about this, but she has a mental block about this one thing. Also, don't block the vents in your refrigerator or freezer. Without good air circulation in the fridge, you can get ice and inefficiency.

You can dry clothes in your bathroom. When we were without a dryer for a while, I just hung our clothes up on hangers (use plastic, not metal) and hung them from the shower curtain rod. (It is better if your rod is one that's attached to the wall instead of a tension rod; those can hold more weight; but I made it work even with a tension rod.) Your clothes will drip water. Depending on your floor type, you may want to just pull away your bath mat and let them drip, or you can arrange your shower curtain so that any drips hit it and roll into the tub. I have very cheap power relative to the rest of the US, but it has recently gone up noticeably. I did the hot water trick when I was home during Covid and it saved me $50 a month. I got lazy, though, about going to the basement to turn it off. Now that my power bill is up about $50 a month over its old average, I need to start turning it off again. Most of the time, since I just wash my dishes from a meal, I use cold water. (Hot water is not necessary from a hygiene perspective; it's just that hot water loosens baked-on or hardened food. But if you wash dishes as soon as they get dirty, the food will not be hard.) But if I want to do a full sink of dishes and the hot water heater isn't on, I will just heat water up to boiling in my electric kettle and fill the sink with that and enough cold water to make it tolerable.

Great ideas! Thank you! I have a suggestion that worked for me. It came from a delay with getting my clothes dryer hooked up and my landlords not allowing a laundry line in my back yard. I had a light weight inexpensive clothes hanging rack and started using that to hang clothes on. I've kept doing it (prefer to use dryer for some things-, towels, bedding, some underthings, etc). It works wonderfully for many clothes and cuts down on the wear and tear on the clothes, as well. Win, win! If people have the space, I encourage them to try it💕

You're so good at this. I'd go nuts trying to remember when to turn my water heater off and on. That's why I had a tankless gas water heater installed. It uses nothing until you need hot water. At my new home, I only have a gas stove, and my gas bill ran around $11.00. Since installing the tankless, my last bill was $19.00, and that's with two adults in the house. The only electric the tankless uses is for the ignitor, just like a gas stove, so it's really negligible. I'll let you know when I can pinpoint my electric savings. This has been an unusually strange weather pattern for North Florida this Winter - Much colder than last year, with bouts of much higher temps, so it's hard to say. You could install an electric tankless water heater, but they cost more to operate than the gas ones, and are not as efficient.

I'm glad you addressed the bathing issue head on! I too don't feel I require a lengthy hot bath or shower every day. If I am stiff and sore from exertion or terribly dirty, I'll take a long hot bath or shower. Other times I'm happy to skip a day or just do a quick wash cloth wipe down while in the tub or shower. Pop the water on just enough to wet my cloth, suds up or sometimes just use baby oil if my skin is dry and then do a quick rinse. Probably about 1/20th of the water and heating costs for even better results. The soap and oil fragrance lasts longer!

He explained that he evicted a tenant that was wasteful... leaving lights on.... running the dishwasher, washer & dryer with half loads... We all know the drill. Something, those that have the extra bathing facility might consider is to run a couple rods across the showerdoorframe/corners of the shower and drip dry heavy weight fabrics like jeans and towels instead of drying them in the dryer

Your fridge should be pulled out from the wall a bit (just an inch or two) so the compressor doesn't overheat/have to work so hard. That one little heater that you have in the living room is actually a benefit because you CAN close off all the other rooms and heat just the living area. If you have central heat, closing too many heat vents is very hard on the furnace and ducting (I know we've all been taught to close heat vents to save money, but a central heat, forced air furnace should have at least 75% of the vents left open to prevent damage to the system).

There are special blankets for hot water tanks to keep your water warm longer... REALLY handy when you keep your house cool. I would even consider doubling them up they have mylar on the outside and insulation... if there is a way to do that with free or thrift store blankets... I am SURE you will be the lady to get it done. You can also insulate the pipes coming off your hot water tank. I can't wait to see everything you figure out to keep those bills coming down. Personal challenge to you.... insulate the heck out of the hot water tank for the cost of the duct tape to hold it together or less. (Because, challenges are fun!)

I have always line dried my clothes which I know helps. I also have an older washing machine which is a top load. I watched when I put the load on extra small water, and noticed that it fills up quite a bit, so I rarely use the extra large water setting. We can get very cold winters here in the Midwest. I used to take long hot baths at night before bed but realized it used up a bunch of energy and water. So now if it is bitter cold out, I still leave the thermostat low but just before going to bed I use my infrared sauna that I built. A man I know, married a woman. Her three adult daughters moved in shortly after with their kids. Not only was he not able to use the washer/dryer, the piles of clothes stacked up in the garage prevented him from coming within ten feet of it. He wound up wiring up a second washer/dryer in his shop. He had the only key. Marty Raines from the television show split his exhaust pipe off his wood stove. From one to three, then one again before going out the ceiling. He tripled the exposed metal and increased his heat noticeably. I've also seen folks stack cinder blocks around their heaters. The blocks absorb the heat and then release said heat after the heater is shut off. But, I notice you have a brick wall behind your heater so you're probably covered. Also, does that house have a sun porch?

New to the party but have you tried using clear bubble wrap on a portion of your windows--no light obstruction but you cannot view out well. Spray window with water to adhere? Also when considering central heat installation look into a heat pump. Excellent for heating and efficient. Finally, for your water heater and refrigerator there are outlet attachments that will decrease the restart load on those appliances thus preserving and protecting your compressors.

I'm 7 minutes into your video and watched the part about unplugging your fridge. A few years back we had an energy crisis in my town; the hydroelectric grid failed and we went to diesel back up which was beyond crazy expensive. We lined the back of the fridge and freezer with water bottles. That made the fridge's compressor only run an hour a day or so, and along with other changes we ended up lowering our electric bill to even less than it was the same time the previous year. Meanwhile everyone else's electric bill went up 4 to 5 times greater.

My situation is also a game to save power, we have solar with net metering in NC, I have the bottom element disconnected on the electric water heater, we use a low wattage mattress pad on the bed, we precool the home in the morning during summer to increase the efficiency of our AC / heat pump unit, and we burn wood when the outside temp is less than 30 degrees about 25 days a year. Our electric bill is about 30 bucks per month and most of that is just basic connect fees. A lot of my power never even hits the meter, goes right from solar to use in the home. ( It is a fun game, and I don't feel like I am sacrificing anything to do these things )

What switch do you all use to turn off your water heater? If you use the circuit breaker, it will eventually wear out. Also I'm not so sure how much money it would save because if it drops in temperature in a water tank and then you eventually need to get it up the temperature to take a shower it has to work harder. It's kind of like your furnace in Minnesota you do not want to set it to go too low when you leave because otherwise when you return it has to work really hard to get back to a reasonable temperature which actually costs more than setting it at a certain sort of low temperature when you're

When you empty your water heater it has to work hard to heat the water. You're especially turning it on only every 2 or 3 days so it's only heating up once. If you left it on it would kick on once the temp drops down to a certain degree. The more you use something the more it wears out. I had an hvac guy tell my ex to always leave the furnace fan running. So he did. A brand new unit had to have something replaced every single year and then eventually completely replaced at 15 years. If it costs more it would show on her electric usage.

The light portion of the bill was only 10% in the 1960s. It is probably even less now due to LED lights. Don't waste your time turning off your low wattage devices including lights, tv, router, computer. For example, at 33¢/hr it would probably take 5 hours for a 6 watt LED (called a 60 watt equivalent because it outputs the same amount of lumens as the old type 60 watt incandescent) to use 1 penny of electricity. An LED tv probably uses on average around 120 watts and costs around 4¢/hr. I think many devices run much lower than their sticker says. I don't know why. It's the big kilowatt appliances running for long time that cost you. A water heater will use nearly 5 kilowatts while its elements are on. That's around $1.50/hr if you're paying 33¢/kwhr. A/C also high and running many hours. Toaster,,, huge draw but only for a minute so no matter. Fighting with your devices that use low hundreds of watts is probably only saving you $10/month. For cost at 48¢/hr, just multiply the 33¢ calcs above by 1.5. I will NOT visit you if you are that cheap.

In our case, our water heater fried. We replaced it with an on-demand - used only in the bathroom for showers. In the kitchen, we have a little 4 gallon heater directly next to the sink. Our electricity costs went down by 55%, just from those two things. On the water heaters - both have VERY short runs between the heater and the faucet. The older hot water heater's run from the basement to the kitchen was 70' and to the bathroom 60'.

Electricity has been so expensive here in Denmark as well. Already in November I did a challenge to get my bill as low as possible. It worked very well, now I only pay the same amount for 3 months that I used to pay for one month. Heating is a different story. It is cold and humid most of the year here and to avoid fungus/mould they advice us to have at least 65F indoors. I have a little more but I can still keep my expenses down to 40% of what is expected in a normal household. I think most Danish homes keep the temperatur around 72-75. In public buildings - offices, schools etc. the temperature is kept at 66.5 to save money. Only nursinghomes, hospitals a.s.o. can heat more. Hot water is different. The fear of legionella keeps the hot water hot and it is not even an option not to. We had an outbreak of legionella some years ago and what a mess. I live in a condominium so we all had to participate in flussing the systems and making sure to leave the hot water running for 3 minuts before taking a shower etc. Only one had legionella but it took 1/2 year to get the problem solved and the bacteria out of our watersystem for good. I think the rise in energy prices has done more for the environmental problems/climate change than all the politicians negotiating goals they either do not intend to keep or cannot keep at all. I like saving money to invest - like you - so I try to keep my expenses down anyway but I did manage to get them futher down when the price rose.

Thank you for letting me know about the weekend rates for PG&E. I have been trying to do laundry before 4 when the peak rate starts. I will switch to weekends. I air dry my laundry on a rack in the garage. It still is drying well even with all the atmospheric rivers we have been having. Wish I could implement more but I have other family members and some of the strategies will not fly. Thank you for sharing.

Come Summer ( and sorry I've said this before ) and I live in NW Florida. Try just running ur A/C at night. Especially if you're not home all day. You've probably been in an airconditioned office or other workplace all day you're in a cool car on the way home so why not wait until you go to bed to turn it on. We turn ours off I'M HOME ALL DAY and I get by with fan. I am older and colder than young people and ladies going through hot flashes might not can do this either. Our new big place has 300 dollar utilities and that's the same as our old house, it was half the size. I also hang out towels in my garage and only fluff them in the dryer when still damp. If they are cleaner ones they can dry stiff! Heck they scrub better drying stiff. We switched to all LED lights too everywhere and they last 3-6 years! They don't run hot!

Too cute! My neighbor thought that because I put my two portable solar panels and one or two of my power stations out to charge that I was in trouble paying bills. I don’t have a lot of money true. I just hate paying PG&E. I use the re-chargeable solar lights in my house between 4 and 9 PM in California. I also think of as many other ways to save as I can. I use the power stations to power things and recharge things.

I saw a five degree improvement winter and summer both after putting the UV blocking film (gila platinum) on my windows, you'll get more benefit in the hot summer than I get here. Look at adding a few more solar panels (ground mount so it's easy to put up yourself). Check if your inverter system goes down when the grid is down or if you can still run. Some inverters are grid-tie only and some are off-grid plus grid-tie so if you are at risk when the grid is down you'll want a backup system.

You could plug the refrigerator into a small inexpensive timer rated, for the correct wattage, that would plug into the outlet. They can be set to automatically turn it on and off. I'm thinking that it might use less energy if it were just set to the highest temperatures that are acceptable and just leave it plugged in.

Interesting, very interesting. We live where our KWH rate is .08. But I remember trying to reason with an aunt who lived in Florida and turned the AC off at night. OMG, the house got to be like 90 and was terrible. Then, in the morning they turned the AC back on and the system ran constantly for hours trying to catch up. Our power company did a study and said that it would be cheaper to set the AC at a higher temp and just leave the thermostat there, rather than the up and down thing. Your water heater is probably 30 or 40 gallons. In three days, it probably gets to room temp. Maybe turning it down to 100 degrees and leaving it there would be cheaper than trying to raise the temp of 30 or 40 gallons of water 50 degrees would be more cost effective. I don't know - could be an interesting experiment. Needless to say, your rate for electricity in California is ridiculous! Taxes are too. Great video and I love the whipped cream thing with the dogs.

Prepper Princess Im not sure if you get to keep the Solar Generators (Sogens) that you review or if you have to send them back. Another way you can save on your electric bill is to have a Transfer Switch wired to your breaker and have in mind which circuits you would like to power directly from the sogen all without messing with extension cords or anything like that.
