20 years after its debut, Cowboy Bebop still stands as one of the greatest anime series of all time. In this video I take a look at its rocky road to release and the lasting impact it's had on the industry in the decades following.
This video contains flashing lights, scenes of violence, and mild visual spoilers for Cowboy Bebop throughout.

I cant help but notice that Studio Ghibli never managed to make a meaningful Magic-System that goes beyond the Complexity of Noob-Baby-Mini-Level. Indeed, they totally ruined the one thing they wanted to 'adapt' and that happened to have a good Magic-System: Earthsee. Maybe they should try to pull it off. "You're gonna carry that weight" That line from the Beatles sums up the whole thing for me... Ed is the young/innocent, unburdened by the weight. Fey refuses to carry the weight, recklessly barrelling away from human connection. Jett is the old dog who grimly accepts the weight as a part of life. (Spoiler) And Spike's weight is so heavy that he can't help but buckle under it.

Bebop is timeless, but even moreso it gets better with age. As we grow further away from our first viewing and change as individuals, the world and the eyes we see it with morphing into unimaginable oblivion, the contrast between Bebop and the anime released in the present will become sharper, and because of the nostalgia, this will only be welcomed with open arms by our hearts and minds. Just like the original viewers of Bebop when it first aired who were hit by a wave of outdated music and cinema that so drastically contrasted with the pop/hip hop/punk/techno that was popular at the time - it'll continue to take us on the most refreshing yet also the most familiar of journeys. Long live Cowboy Bebop.

@John Beck tl;dr Yup Evangelion is a trip. LOLz, I think thats the whole point with Evangelion, just complete bafflement. I mean the common anime tropes are there. It's just the timing or the way the script or narrative is driven. Very large complex and emotional, but then strangely cold unemotional scenes. Black Lagoon or even Trigun was hilarious.

I don't know how many times i've watched Cowboy Bebop, but everytime i see it, i feel a pain deep in my chest, like a sentiment of nostalgia, like something that was always there, comforting me in my most introspect and philosophical moments of my teenagehood. It was the reason i started listening to jazz and blues at the age of 15 and became absolutely addicted to the genres since then. Puting the shounen aside that were born in the final of the 90s (in this case, the "big three"), Cowboy Bebop is definatly the greatest anime i've ever watched in my life, just like Ghost in the Shell, Akira and so many other animes that try to defy the greatest dogmas of society, and defy the civilization trough it's expectators, us of course. And as strange as it might seem, i've always preferred the subs over the dubs, always, not because the english language is not my native language, but because i've always prefer the series in their original content, however Bebop is the only show that i have that is in it's dub version, don't know why but the only way i can see it is in the american version like there's some inexplicable reason to it. Beyond Ghibli i just found out about you and your channel today and the only thing that comes to my mind to say about what you do is - "Tank" you. PS - You've just gained a new subscriber.

Man I just watched space dandy (first time), samurai champloo (first time) and Cowboy Bebop (second or third time can't remember) within a span of a month. After watching all of them, it is hard to pick which one is better but Bebop definitely hit me with the feels the most. My perception of the show has changed with every viewing. My first time was when I was a little shit in middle school. I absolutely loved it and hated that it was over, but I missed the point of the show. This time I just felt empty and depressed after the end of it. Nothing lasts forever, you can't run from your past, and you can't hide your vulnerabilities from other people. Still need to rewatch the movie, but goddamn, there are few shows that force introspection like this one. The main thing I can take away from this is you can always mend the past no matter the hardship, cause you're gonna carry that weight.

Your style of writing, editing and critical eye makes your videos almost equal to the anime’s that you are discussing. In some cases (Miss Hokusai) I’ve preferred your videos and hearing you discusss the movies more than I enjoyed the movies themselves. You are real talent and I think it’s only a matter of time until you break out of KZfaq...

This gave me the same feelings as when I first watched this show all over again. Well said- I couldn't pin down what that feeling I got from Bebop was, but I think you're right. It's "belonging". I got so invested and immersed in the characters and world that I felt like I was actually there, another member of their dysfunctional little family haha.. I just finished watching this show, but already I'm longing for a rewatch.

Thank you Beyond Ghibli for making a video on my favorite series of all time. All love. This anime touched me in a personal level because I can relate to spike and the rest of the cast because the anime display thier suffering through unique ways of story telling. The story is deep and unique in so many ways and I love it because it's very grounded and realistic. Cowboy bepop ost is my life, it helped me through depression because the ost has very emotional and relax vibe that I can listen to. I would listen to the ost religously because my life is filled with depressed things, I've listened to it these past 1 year and a half and still listening to this day. Love the characters and the rest.

For future videos, would you consider including a works cited list in the description to assist viewers who may want to follow up on some of the interesting facts you lay out in the video? Lastly, thank you for all of the research, editting, etc you did for this deep dive! It is amazing. As a long time Cowboy Bebop fan and repeat viewer, you have my immense gratitude.

The thing I definitely enjoy from your videos is when you go over the history of the series and its production. This video for example I have never heard about how cowboy bebop didn't air all the episodes originally, how it was funded, and how much effort it took just to actually make the series. The backstory to this series is one I rarely hear anyone talk about and its interesting to finally hear about it in detail.

I can't count how many times I've watched this short series, and i swear i see new stuff that i missed every time. The opening theme, Never ever ever gets old. Toys in the Attic is classic and hits every nail, that explains why anime/manga is so great, dead on its head.

It’s fun to come back to these retrospectives every so often. It brings up such good memories of watching this for the first time as a kid. Sitting there in the dark, completely enthralled with every episode. It made me feel emotions that were new at the time, and was probably the first time that a show really made me sit and think about it and process how I felt about it. And every time, it takes me right back to how I felt then, like it’s still somehow new. Shit. What a great show.
