Definitely still give it a go - I think I’m in the minority with my opinion on this one.

I've only read the sample so far, and I'm considering buying the book. When you say you don't know why she equates flat landscapes with her state of mind, I read right at the beginning that this was because as a child the flat green fields near Lahore represented the opposite of the cramped and noisy place where Noreen lived, which stifled and traumatised her, and which she hated. That sounds believable, not forced, to me. My hesitation about the book might be that I've read one too many books recently by outwardly successful people complaining about their inner issues. I'm drawn to this one for the nature writing, though. And because I'm off wild camping soon to the Dengie Peninsula in Essex, being a lover of flat landscapes and solitude. I appreciate your review, though. I found it valuable.

I’ll be really interested to see what you think when you finish it. I understood the general premise, but I didn’t think tying the nature and memoir sections together under that umbrella worked particularly well for me though. If you are interested in the nature side I thought that was pretty good. Thanks 🧡

I am about a quarter of the way through. I like digressions and tangents so it is working better for me so far at least. I can see a risk of it getting repetitive but at the moment I am still curious.

I think it’s much more of a you book than a me book, I’ll be interested to hear your final thoughts when you finish it

I loved this book, wasn’t completely perfect but I do love a memoir 😅 Great review as always. It’s important to have both sides of the coin with reviews esp with popular books ❤

I think memoir fans are enjoying this book more, maybe memoirs are just not my jam (though I did love Matrescence and Intervals…) 🤷‍♀️

The other reviews I've seen have been very positive, so it's good to get my expectations managed 😂My mind is always off on a tangent somewhere, so this might work for me. Depends if she's able to bring it back to the middle.

I’m taking this off of my TBR because I like the character development more than the beautiful prose. Linear is my preference too. Tangents are not for me.

Yeah, it definitely isn’t a book that everyone will like.

I read on the WP website an interview with the author that makes a lot of your feelings here make sense. It’s always interesting to hear different points of view, popular or not. A thoughtful review and I’m still looking forward to reading this and seeing what I think. 😊📚

You've expressed exactly how I felt about the book. I ended up dnf'ing it. I agree, it felt forced. Her writing was beautiful but it wasn't enough to keep me in the book. I've learned over the last year that I am not the biggest fan of memoirs. I lose my patience easily with them and dnf them more quickly than a novel.

I’m glad I’m not alone! I don’t read loads of memoirs, this may be why 😂😂

Ooooh. It doesn't sound interesting at all, but then I am not a fan of memoirs in general. NF is hard for me because nobody vets the information. Whose to say they're not all totally made up and should be called fiction? Just MHO 🙂. Thank you for the review!!
