TEPITO, MEXICO CITY - Mexico City is full of variety, full of amazing architecture and beautiful areas such as Condesa, Roma, Coyoacan and more. Mexico City is safe and full of amazing people (trust me, I've been gere a long tim).
However there's a side to Mexico City that people don't talk about, even some Mexico City residents will not venture there. This is Tepito.
Tepito is widely considered to be one of Mexico City's most dangerous areas with a reputation for crime, drug dealing, the weapons trade, violence and the sale of counterfeit goods. It's an area that feels worlds away from the rest of CDMX.
As a foreigner from the UK, I wanted to visit. I've lived in Doctores and been to Ecatapec. I'm from London so I am no stranger to drugs, violence and watching my back (yes, London is dangerous!).
DISCLAIMER - I do not for one second recommend that as a tourist ,you risk your safety by visiting Tepito, it's your choice. It's very rare that I would suggest not to go somewhere, but this is possibly one occasion.
TIPS -
- Do not go alone
- Have some grasp of Spanish
- No photos or video of vendors or products without permission
- No jewellery
- No money
- No bags
- No valuable equipment
- Do not go at night
I am happy to risk my safety to bring you these videos - I hope you understand that. I will not entertain abusive comments as it was my decision to go there and risk my safety.

8:13 That's not a "Santa Muerte", that's the Virgin Mary's supposed apparition in Mexico City known as Virgin of Guadalupe with Juan Diego, a local Native American. Virgin of Guadalupe has a church in a place known as "la Villa", near a hill known as Tepeyac, inside Mexico City. And that church is actually the second most visited Catholic church in the world, only behind The Vatican. I would also say that "San Judas", the patron saint of the "lost souls" (criminals) is much more important than "Santa Muerte" in Tepito. San Judas's church is somewhat nearby Tepito. Now, Santa Muerte does have a small cult, specially in places like Tepito, but it's not as big as people make it seem.

There is a caveat to this, the Virgin Mary and the Saints images might not represent what the Catholic Church icons are, but what Santeros use to represent other deities, like Yemaya and other noncristian entities, ( a sort of Witchcraft), I believe it is most likely that those altars are dedicated to the Santeros religion and not to Catholic images, please do a search on Santeria and Syncretism, it is very interesting, I'm not saying though that they are definitely that, but it is well known that in Tepito many follow Santeria.
@thegreatsilence1915
@thegreatsilence1915 5 жыл бұрын
@@jannadominguez7858 I'm perfectly aware that Santeria exists and how it works. I also know that Santeria is practiced in Tepito. But the altars dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe that you see in the video are common EVERYWHERE in Mexico, not just Tepito. And not only is it a cult that is completely accepted and embraced by the Catholic Church itself, on its highest orders (from the Popes themselves, for over centuries), with the Virgin of Guadalupe being one of the most known supposed Marian apparitions worldwide, on par with the Virgin of Fatima, with the tilma of its apparition being granted a canonical coronation and being almost as important as Turin's shred, and Juan Diego, the supposed native witness of the "miracle" being considered an official saint by the catholic church; but, it is also a practice mainly done by catholics in one the most catholic countries on the world, such as Mexico, both in total numbers and as a % of the population. There's a reason why "Basilica de Guadalupe" is the second most visited church in the world, with literal millions of people going there every year, only behind the Vatican: Mexicans in general are extremely devoted to her, no Santeria or witchcraft involved, to the point that an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was used by Miguel Hidalgo, the Mexican father of independence, as the flag of Mexico's independence movement. And as for the cult towards San Judas, it is also a super common catholic practice, and people in Tepito embrace him simply because both Catholicism is extremely widespread in Mexico and because he happens to be the patron Saint of lost causes. Also, just as a sidenote. The Virgin of Guadalupe itself is a syncretism, she being a "mestiza" (mixed European and Native heritage), but also between the Virgin from the bible and Tonantzin, I believe, a Mesoamerican goddess. Its image was used by the Spaniards for conversion purposes during the colony because of this.

I wanted to go to Tepito for a few reasons: I love Mexico city and want to know all the different neighborhoods, I am reading a book that is set there, a taxi driver once told me to never go there (that made me curious),and like you, I like to see places where tourists don't go. I watched your video and asked my Airbnb host her opinion. She said it was ok, just don't bring a backpack and watch my phone and money. So off I went. I had a fine time and no issues. I walked around the market, bought a few gifts, stopped at a small art gallery and a church and then headed home. Thank you for making this video!

Loved this video David, and as always I love your perspective. I feel like a lot of times the conversation about Mexico swings hard one way or the other--either everything is a delightful paradise where nothing bad ever happens, or it's filled with "bad hombres" who are out to get you. The truth is always in the middle. Being aware of your surroundings, being careful, and being realistic about where you're at is not the same as being terrified of Mexico or Mexicans. Yes there IS crime. You do have to be careful. But you're exactly right--you have to be careful anywhere you go. I was very cautious of pickpockets in Mexico City, but guess what? I was every bit as cautious about that in Lisbon. In New York City. It's all about being smart and not making yourself an easy mark. It's not unique to Mexico. I think the people who don't get that, who go in with a "Everything is perfect!" attitude are the ones who get in trouble. At any rate, I've been looking forward to this video from you, and I really enjoyed it.

They warn of crime like kidnapping, rape and last but not least dismemberment lol 😂... true enough one needs to take precautions but I do that in Toronto too... it’s no paradise any where ...just the reality of life. I really enjoyed this video. It was well made with intrigue!

You said mainstream media. In the US the MM is controlled by the shadow govt & the CIA. I've seen strong evidence that indicates many historic incidents are hoaxed, incidents like the Charles Manson murder case, Boston Marathon bombing, Sandy Hook, Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, JFK assassination, the Cuban Missle crisis, were all quite possibley faked by the shadow govt and the C I A. I've seen strong evidence that indicates drug cartels do not exist and, like Charles Manson, El Chapo Guzman is fake, it is the New World Order, C I A, and shadow govt that brings drugs into the US. I would not blame the reader for not believing any of these crazy sounding things, I know I would not have believed it 3 months ago - but I've seen the evidence and in each and every case the evidence is compelling. Point is, with the abundance of fakery they manufacture, besides the alleged drug cartels who may be fake, what other negative stories in Mexico might be lies that the NWO, CIA, and shadow govts are feeding to the sheeple via mainstream media? Food for thought: The C I A is headquartered in Langley, Virginia and Merida, Mexico - that should tell you something and raise some important questions.

What do you mean by "real" part of México, every part of it its the real part of it, the good and the bad, these seems bias towards "the bad part is the real" and that my amigo is wrong.
@davidostrowski679
@davidostrowski679 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Sergio I've talked about this before, Mexicans seem to misunderstand the meaning. Real is POSITIVE, not negative. By real I mean authentic and not a traditional tourist location. For example, I'm from London, I would not call Buckingham Palace 'real' as it's just a boring tourist location, but go to the suburbs and you get more of a real, authentic, local experience that is not mentioned in tourist brochures. For example, Condesa is not 'real' Mexico City as it's been taken over by gringos. I'd rather be somewhere surrounded by locals. Does that help?

Hey Brenda and Jeff! I'll take it as a compliment as I've just hit 40 LOL. Re equipment I always say you don't need to go crazy with spending, this video's quite old but back then I used a DJI gimbal with a smartphone. I now use a DJI OM4 and a Mavic Mini drone so I have invested since then, but I think to start off with it doesn't matter so much because even most smartphones are good quality and many in 4K. I'd try to have some kind of stabilization as nowadays the whole 'shaky cam' thing is a bit outdated and considering there's so much affordable equipment on offer these days, there's really no excuse! In Mexico I'd probably avoid a proper camera anyway just to avoid drawing attention to yourself.

Hi David! Thanks for the reply. I had to correct my typo. I saw it read equivalent , but I meant to type equipment. I knew you understood what I meant. 😂. I have a camcorder I bought for $80 on Amazon, but I need to upgrade a bit, because my camera doesn’t have a microphone. I still use it for taking videos and pictures. I also use my Canon DSLR and my smartphone.Can I purchase the equipment you use on Amazon as well? The video on Tepito in Mexico City was very interesting. Many places in Mexico are safe, but it’s so widely diverse, so of course there’s places where it’s important to be cautious. Can you send me a link on the equipment you use? That would be awesome!

Yes, the video would also be in darkness if I filmed it at night, hence why this was filmed in the afternoon. I used to live in Guerrero about a year ago, I used to walk through Tepito and Lagunilla late at night all the time and never had an issue

That's why I purposely said 'considered to be' at the beginning as I knew I would get comments like this if I didn't. Plus if I did a video about those areas, no one would watch. You're right, Tepito is famous, hence why I did the video there! Thanks for the info though!

You were so brave. I have been for 4 time in Mexico City, I always have been thinking about going to Tepito but I felt a little insecure about it. It's interesting visit the real Mexican places and Tepito is a good place for it. Continúa haciendo el buen trabajo que haces y espero algún día finalmente poder visitar Tepito que sigue en mi lista de lugares pendientes de la Fantástica Ciudad de México. Greetings from Honduras my friend.

Hello friend David: thank you for your videos I love and I agree with you, you should always be careful, I am from Mexico City. Mexico has a reputation for bad, thanks to the ill-intentioned media but it is not so, now that Tepito has the same fame but I assure you I have 50 years going there and I was never assaulted or robbed, because the people there have a code of ethics that if they see someone steals when all would punish him, the people of all those areas are noble and kind people. Still, your caution is very good and that's all over the world, seriously your super well, you're the best, maybe if there's danger but not enough to die of fear or to trust yourself. Thank you for your words from my country, if the people there see your videos even will pamper you or help you in whatever you need, I am from the mayor of Cuajimalpa colony of San Lorenzo Acopilco, a small town full of very beautiful vegetation on the banks of the city even side of San ta Fe for the roadhut, when you like to come to your house, a friend who admires and respects you, Mexico City. by the way you spoke very well in Spanish,bay.

I would be more scared of dying from food poisoning. Everytime I visit Mexico, I get sick regardless of how careful I am to avoid street food. It's just me. Other family members have never gotten sick and they eat everything. Good filming.

Hey! I know what you mean. I've had lots of problems before in Asia, but in Mexico I had extreme sickness for 4 weeks when I first got there, but for the whole time after that, not a single problem! I had my appendix removed 5 years ago and since then I have problems with foods like dairy or pasta/rice so have to be careful. Thanks for watching!

I was born in Mexico City. My Dad is from Puebla but lives in Mexico City and has pretty much been there the majority of his life. he met my Mother in Dallas and when they married they moved to Mexico City where he had his business. I came to the states at 2 years of age with my Mother because she missed being close to family in Texas. But growing up I went there every year for Christmas. Honestly I never liked Mexico City. It's way too crowded. Traffic is a nightmare. Pollution, though not as bad as in decades past, still can be bad. But what I really don't like about Mexico City is that it feels too formal. It's almost like it tries to be a European city. The architecture of course goes back centuries to the Spaniards. But there is this ambiance, especially in higher class areas, of arrogance. I feel obligated to go every year because my Dad is older, now 89, and he can't come to Dallas. Otherwise I prefer other places in Mexico. I love Playa Del Carmen. It's very laid back and the weather is never too humid. I also went to Sonora in Northern Mexico where my Grandfather was born and I liked Sonora. I like the desert anyways and it feels laid back. There is so much more space in Sonora whereas in Mexico City I feel claustrophobic like I am closed in. Too many buildings all over the place. Hills, everywhere. It's hard to run there, which as an avid runner makes Mexico City not the best place for me. But I do manage to get used to it to some degree during my stay because I do not like to skip my daily run. Mexico City is just too pretentious. I also don't like the food at Christmas. I want to eat Mexican food but they end up making romeritos and bacalao (fish) which I think is more of a Spanish tradition. Fuck Spain. I don't want Spanish food. I want Mexican food. And it gets chilly at night. I've never been to Tepito and when I mentioned it to my relatives there they looked at me crossways.
