The wire mesh was to prevent basketballs from breaking the glass. That building was where phy-ed classes used to go from the Almond-Bancroft School. That building is the old town hall. In the basement of the NE corner of the building used to be the town barber. The village library was in the basement on the SE corner entrance among other things throughout the years. Kudos for pronouncing the name correctly. I noticed you had said it correctly at 8:38 before you had actually told us, lol. I grew up in Almond, my father owned the gas station you were at and I grew up doing oil changes and pumping gas there.

My wife has lived in this community her entire life. We purchased our first home in this town and lived there for 19 years before building a new home about 10 miles away. Our kids continued to go to Almond Bancroft Schools. It is my understanding that the population was at least three times the present population. There was also a railroad that came through the town. I found it very interesting when going through the Historical Museum that a lot of the families have been there for many generations. It was a great area to raise our kids. A friend of mine owns Premier Overhead Doors. It used to be a hardware store.

As an Almond resident for 16 yrs, I still say almond like the nut! And the brick building with the metal on the windows was a gymnasium. So close to my house...but not quite!

Another great video. I would like to make a little suggestion/request. When you do the background information about these small towns, especially when revealing their population I think it would be interesting to also mention what the peak population of the town was and when it was at its peak population. Considering how these towns have shrunk over the last few decades it would just seem interesting to know how big they were at their peak. Well, at least to me. Thanks.

All of these old towns you show I would love to live in ..... but small towns dying all across USA.... I live near 3 small towns very rural....one is a real ghost town....one will soon be gone.....one is still somewhat operational but police recently no-more and hardware store gone and most businesses gone.....sad to watch.....place I live was founded in 1790 but nothing left now

i worked at a lot of old schools throught Chicago for some reason a lot of those schools had the gymnasium on the top floor ,witch seemed strange there must have been a reason . i think because they could build a much higher ceiling ,I think those grates were to protect the glass from basket balls and other objects . love the channel ! keep em comming

I grew up in Illinois but spent many Summer weekends in Wisconsin. Blatz was a terrible beer. We referred to Old Milwaukee as Old Hemorrhoid. Pabst shouldn't have been on the bad list at all. Strohs (the 'fire brewed beer) was pretty good. We drank Old Style all the time ($1.19/6 pack). Probably the best beer for the price was Fox Deluxe. It was $3.25 A CASE in bottles. I think there was a $1 deposit for the case of bottles. Mind you , this was in 1975-8.

The building infront of the hotel was a restaurant. My family used to own it but it had to close down because of the well. Some of the business in Almond are family owned. Tater Toot is the best. It's always the last weekend in July. We always have good food, drinks, beer, other adult drinks, we also have a band that comes and plays. We always have a parade the 2 day of tater toot. The almond bancroft band plays in the parade. And we always have floats. Almond is such a great place to live. Nice and quiet but not always quiet 😭 but still a nice place.

We just got a new overhead garage door from Premier Overhead Doors in downtown Almond. The new door is a big improvement for our house and the couple that own and run Premier were great to deal with. Great price for a superior door.

Ah, the water fight barrel. Brings back memories as well. That may be a German thing. Many volunteer fire departments in Wisconsin were started by German immigrants and the traditions carried on. I tried some Old Milwaukee earlier this year. It’s brewed by Schlitz. You know what that rhymes with.😧

The old building with the metal wire on the inside reminds me of the old neighborhood armories the national guard used to have before they went to the larger fortified buildings. We had a few of these armory buildings around our neighborhood in South Chicago.

That building with the chain link visible thru the 2nd story windows, was it a (or, formerly) a school gym? If so, like Marty said, it coukd be there to protect the glass from damage, as in an errantly thrown basketball. My guess anyway.

Love the name of the town , Almond. Pretty cool about the Walker house built on 1903. Almond historical society building was closed-too bad. 7th day Adventist church is a Unique old church. Visiting old cementaries is one of favorite things to do when in small towns. Small town pride is evident! Yes definitely different ways to pronounce "Almond " depending where you are a from. Love your two pups! You rarely see Pabtz Blue Ribbon signs. Old gas pumps are always interesting! That is a pretty cool looking "old" car. That is a random thing to find- guitar pick😂! The wire mesh was put into windows to help prevent from shattering during fires. Local hangouts in small towns are always fun.

Back in the day, when I was younger I was a carney worker and we set up in Almond... we all thought it was going to be a dud, but people came out of the woodwork and lost thier freakin minds because it was like the only big entertainment they got all year,,, ended up being one of the best spots I ever played and the people were awesome

we do the water fights here in SW Colorado , I think they used to spray each other but to many people got hurt so they came up with the barrel idea, I could be wrong, come visit Rico Colorado sometime , you would like it, old mining town. love your show

In our small town of Winthrop harbor IL, south of Pleasant Prairie our park has one of those barrels, I had to ask an uncle what it was for, he said the same thing as you. Those windows predate safety glass, so wire mesh was used.

You missed the coolest state historical marker - just down the road is a marker for Sir Henry Soloman Wellcome (of the pharmaceutical fame). It's two arbor vitae trees drawn together like a pair of lungs surrounding the historical marker.

The fire departments have the battle of the barrels between the firefighters I remember it in Valier Pennsylvania for the Valier homecoming

Not to be rude, but I grew up in almond. The east side is the bad part of town. Many drug related issues such as shootings, overdoses, and stealing. I have witness this first hand as a child up to an adult. Nothing is ever shared in the news and everyone is very hush hush about it. The town officials do not care about the residents on the east side. Even the portage county police do not care about the residents. The sheriff of portage county and his wife live on the outskirts of almond village and turn their cheeks to the dangers of these issues. At the end of the day, this is still a great informative video.

go buy a 100 acre farm and try and make a living any more and you will see why they sell out. farmers ARE the ONLY business in the states who are NOT allowed to set prices for what they produce unless they sell direct to the consumer
