Ah, I might be able to help! There's a fascinating Japanese mythological creature called the kitsune, and they are multitailed (or sometimes single-tailed, which has some very interesting connections I'll explain in a minute) shapeshifting fox (deities?? I'm not entirely sure). What's especially fun about this is that there's a kind of young, immature kitsune called a nogitsune. They have a single tail, and tricking two guys into fighting each other almost to the death is right up their alley, as they're very mischievous, to the point of sometimes being borderline malevolent. My guess is that the woman is a nogitsune who decided to have some fun by SERIOUSLY messing with two random dudes.
