Used this system when I was living off my motorcycle. I could make a quick camp by stringing a tarp off the side of the bike and throwing this bag under it. Would protect from any wind, rain, or snow blowing under the tarp. Also did great in the tent.

Great video. I used your information to make my final decision. I bought the system piece meal. I paid $50 for the Bivy & $50 for the Patrol Bag all brand new. I dont plan to camp in extreme cold weather so this is fine. If I need more warmth, a wool blanket will work. To top off my system, I added a $36 Sleep Pad. So for $136, I got a great system. Thanks for the great info.

I was 21 in 1989 when Batman with Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton came out. And I saw it in the movie theater. I was a Boy Scout as a teenager and I camped with my parents too. So I learned something about moderate camping and hiking when I was young. I haven't been camping and hiking much these days. I would have to sleep earlier and focus on doing it. I just happened to notice this video when scrolling through videos suggested by KZfaq. I was searching for a video related to "modern sleep," I think possibly partly related to modern monophasic sleeping patterns compared to older poly-phasic sleep patterns. I had a particular video in mind. But I haven't found it yet. Oh! I just remembered that I was looking for a video about what happens when a night owl wakes up early. And I found it again. But maybe I can continue watching this video later. I also subscribed. Thanks!

Soldiers still sell owner some stuff usually when they go awol I believe lol.anyway I was in there and know owner, some guy sold one to owner, like brand new, I don't think it had ever been used, inner and outer bag gray, not black, no bivy, vic let me have it for $85.00!! What a quality channel, donot lose hope, you will have loads of subscribers. I know its pricy, I bought it for 30 USD from Peshawar, Pakistan, brand new, Bivy, Patrol Bag, Black Bag with all accessories. These were available, mostly people brought it from Afghanistan, left over of US Military. I have used it in below zero temperatures, this is awesome sleep system. One thing is missing in bivy, a mesh to prevent bugs getting in, I am trying to add mesh to it. Great channel, love from Pakistan.

Thank you so much! This comment made my day, and I really appreciate the fact your all the way in Pakistan. I think you win the award for the furthest comment on the channel so far. 30 USD???? Good grief! Wish I could have found that kind of deal here in the states. And they seem to have gone up since I purchased mine. If you ever get the mesh problem figured out, let us all know. I’m sure myself and a lot of others on here would like to see that work.

@@TheCraftyCrowShow yes 30 USD, mostly people ignored it because both bags and bivy was insode big sack, so people thought its one giant sleeping bag, I knew there are three pieces in it, so luckily I got it, there are plenty of them brand new, recently I asked, they increased price to 60 USD, I would have sent it to you as a gift, problem is its weight, shipment is too expensive. I love American products, your products are bench mark in the world. I bought loads of U.S.G.I equipment, Mole II Medium ruck sack, USGI liners, Ponchos, Canteen Bottles, Canteen, Lazerbrite lights, MR Goggles, MREs, Gerber Tools, Armstrong Tools, these are all brought from Afghanistan, these are left overs of US Military. I needed military tent, Litefighter 1 tent, I imported it from USA. Hats off to your products, I am really impressed by the R&D and quality of American companies on their products, there is no match. Yes sure, I will try to put two poles in bivi, at the top, and will add mesh to it, lets see, I will definitely make video of it and will send you. Thanks a lot for such cool videos.

Military equipment still has a lot of research and development put into it, but an increasing amount of our civilian products are made in China now unfortunately. Check out a company called Rothco. They do government contracting and I think you can find some products surplus through them. Your absolutely right about the shipping weight though. That whole system together is heavy, but I really appreciate the thought, And appreciate your kind words. If you get the bug net figured out I would love to see the video. Might even post it on here so everyone can see with your permission.

One enterprising young sergeant used 1/4" PVC piping cut to order to place into the four corners of a U.S. Army cot. He then sold the "cages" for $10 each to his fellow soldiers. You put the mosquito "bar" (netting) over that, and the pipe "cage" allows you to sit up inside the netting area of the cot to get dressed, etc. Mosquito netting only works if you keep it 1-2 inches away from your skin!

A few caveats from a U.S. Army officer who's slept everywhere from Fort Bragg, NC to Fort Irwin, CA to Iraq and back in the last 20+ years: 1.) There is a not-shown green stuff sack for the summer-weight patrol sleeping bag as well. 2.) There is a compressible pillow (cameo colored or blue/green pattern) available. 3.) Get the poncho liner. Not the "new" one, but the old cameo one. Get four or five. These heavily-knit sheets with shoelaces on each corner are more like thin quilts, and when used as a bottom bedsheet on a cot or air mattress lets you use either sleeping bag on top as a quilt with a footbox. When used with the entire three-piece sleep system, the poncho liner adds about another 10 degrees F of warmth, and slides around so you can use it to keep your neck warm, etc. They also make great quilt top covers for beds at home. The sleep system was U.S. Marines before it was U.S. Army, which explains some differences in colors on the Internet.

That’s some great info, thank you. Got a few military guys at work that bring their poncho liners as blankets and still swear by them. I’ve used this setup recently in 32-35° weather thinking there was no way I’d be cold and I will say I wasn’t terribly cold, but I was pretty damn cold and certainly was not warm and cozy by any means. This was with me also wearing long underwear op and bottom, socks, a thick flannel long sleeve, hoodie and a beanie while also having a flannel sheet and a cotton knit blanket stuffed inside the bag with me.. so in regards to temperature rating I would definitely have to say unless you are fully dressed for extreme cold such as thick wool socks and your extreme cold pants/tops, I would not take this system below 30° without proper clothing and think you’re going to be warm because you won’t be. Oh and this was inside of a jeep as well so no ground temp or wind at play either. So consider that before taking your bag out and prepare appropriately. Aside from that it’s a solid setup, and better than most everyday bags you find on the market, aside from the expensive high compression light weight top of the line stuff you can get now at REI.

I find that sleeping inside of vehicles is worse than sleeping on the ground. I don’t know. Maybe more wind gets in than when you’re on the ground. I’ve slept in very cold temperatures in this system with a sleeping pad and a “woobie” inside the bag and although a little uncomfortable, it is totally good enough to sleep in. Adding more layers of blankets etc could definitely make this system warm enough to sleep in extremely cold temps.

How do you store your bags?? I’ve had my two bags, w/o the bivy, down to the low 20s and I woke up more than a few times having to vent. Granted I was wearing lvl 1 and 2 grid fleece. But if your bags are always compressed-you need to spend a good amount of time fluffing them up. In addition, any cold bag is useless without a good pad-and a jeep is the worse place to be in the cold-steel isn’t an insulator. Just my 2c

The Bivy and 1 (yes only ONE because you will HATE carrying it) are a great budget sleep system. I still have 2 and I’ll never get rid of them. Right now they are relegated to my boys until they move on to something nicer when they get older. I have slept all the way down to 8degF in the bivy and black bag with an inflatable sleeping pad and my winter cloth layers. GTG. The biggest drawback is it’s heavy and bulky. That system took up most of my backpack but it did it’s job and at the time it was all I had to not freeze at those temps. Love these! Now I use the snugpak SF bivy, SF1 bag (similar to the patrol bag but lighter/warmer, TS1 liner and a Hyke & Byke center zip down bag to match. That whole system weighs less than the MSS with the same philosophy of use. I have never used it all together, rather, I mix and match what I need depending on the worst case conditions I expect. Cheers! 🤙🏽

Liked the video. I’ve been in the Army since 1994. In the reserves now. The MSS is far superior coming from the days of a sleeping bag wool blanket and a shelter half. When we go to the field we have the Litefighter tent which is okay but not a four season tent. You can buy an add on that will winterize it. I still carry the Bivy cover as I can throw my ruck, assault pack and boots inside and it is completely waterproof. Mainly because the tent can’t hold the stuff in it. If you haven’t tried the Litefighter tent, you should.

Lighter layers closest to my body then work my way out. Works for me. Never hurts to invest in a REALLY GREAT PENDLETON WOOL BLANKET. Bought a queen size chief Joseph pattern Pendleton blanket. I bought mine a few years ago. It had only been used on one outing in Texas. The guy that sold mine to me (on eBay) bought five for his family. He said that his family didn't like the idea of feeling like they were sleeping in coffins. So after I bought it the guy refunded me $10 because he couldn't find the compression bag and I got the entire system for $117 including shipping. But he bought them brand new. Could had I afforded more than one bag at the time, I would have bought 2 or 3. But turned out the guy looked everywhere but in the boxes for the compression bags. It would have been $127. So I got a steal at nearly $120 for practically a brand new sleep system. I added a fleece liner and a liner that's like a sheet, sewn 3/4 of the way around looks like a rectangle sleeping bag. But thinking about taking the stitchings out and sewing it into the fleece liner. So it keeps everything clean... And I bought a refurbished Klymit memory foam camp pillow, to add to my sleep system. It really was a great investment on my part...

I have the grey intermediate cold bag, which I guess is the equivalent of the black portion of the system you have, but it looks a little different, like yours might be a newer version. In any case, the tag on the foot says it's designed for use between 30 and -10. I wouldn't trust it at -10 and would be wary of it at 0, but I have used it down to 20 with a thermal base layer and 3.8R Thermarest pad and it was very warm. I often use mine upside down so the hood lays over my head instead of under it. It's also really good in warmer weather for unzipping and turning sideways to use it like a quilt. The insulation in these things is Primaloft - a very good synthetic insulator designed for the US military, but also still in use by Nemo among other high end outdoor brands. It's kind of a heavy, bulky bag, but as far as synthetic bags go it's still more compact than a lot of more expensive civilian options and the peripherals are very heavy duty. The zipper opens just by ripping the bag so you don't have to fight with it. For the price you can pick these up for they're THE single best choice for people on a budget. They are every bit the equivalent of a top of the line civilian brand synthetic bag for a mere fraction of the cost. I paid a whopping $2.75 for mine at a thrift store and it gets more use than my $400 down bag because it's so much more comfortable and durable. And they are very comfortable, roomy bags.

I have a cheaper inflatable mattress and don’t notice a huge difference between the thin iso mat and it. But the inflatable is much easier to pack. A minor mistake people make is the bag orientation. the intermediate/Winter bag goes inside the patrol bag, not the other way around. The people who claim getting cold at 30 degrees I lay you 10 to 1 are laying on cold steel of a vehicle with wind freezing said steel and or have their bags layered improperly....or are just on the ground using no pad. I don't care how cold you sleep, there is no way in HELL this system will fail at 30 degrees without user error. Maybe if you strip first?🤣

Just a warning to anyone who has not used a bivy before. your body produces a HUGE amount of moisture as you sleep. its unreal. If its raining and you have to close yourself in. there is NO amount of ventilation that will pull out all the moisture you produce and just the amount of moisture from your breathing will actually turn the dome over your face into a terrarium. It will RAIN inside your bivy from the moisture coming out of your lungs. thats ok if you can dry all your things the next day. I once was caught in a rain storm that lasted 4 days. I didnt have a way to dry out my sleep system. so good fabric can be wet and still retain heat. So for a night my bed was soaked, I was warm and wet. it was a bad nights sleep but I was able to sleep and I avoided hypothermia easily. just sucked. so in good weather I love sleeping outside. no tent. just my bag. In bad weather, a bit of rain, kinda cold, be away from services for a week. you need a tent. Hands down.

Thanks a lot, and glad you enjoyed the video. I have got some condensation I noticed, but only after pulling my head inside the bag and breathing into it all night (like I’m not supposed to do). Every other time when I’ve kept only my mouth exposed and a gaiter over it I haven’t noticed any at all. I’m assuming the Gore-tex liner helps get rid of any that might unknowingly accumulate

They go for $200 in Canada. I picked up just the green patrol bag for $40 at surplus store, and recently another one for $8.99 at Value Village. Both patrol bags look brand new, no tears, no markings. If you are like me and own two patrol bags, they will work together. If you own all three, then you have more temp options: green or green+green, or green+black. Any idea what insulation is used in them? I got Gen III level 7 pants for cheap just because the army changed the insulation they use in it. I have a Canadian Army bivy but would rather have the USA ones as they are better designed than the simple envelope design of the Canadian ones.

Nooooo, not light at all. The entire setup is probably around 10-12 pounds. It would definitely take care of you with the weather starting to turn colder and being unpredictable this time of year, but it definitely isn’t light if your planning on hiking. But if your fit enough and that weight don’t scare you for that big of a hike, then I don’t think you will regret having what it offers.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I just measured my chest and it’s around 56, and my belly is probably 58 at the largest point. The individual bags aren’t bad by themselves, but once you put the whole system together it gets a little tight. Not uncomfortable tight, but still a bit snug after I get my arms tucked in. It might be good to try and find one you can try out first, just to be safe. Hope that helps though

I had one of those old M 1949’s for years. The MSS seems to have a little more room than the 1949’s do to me. So if you can fit in one of those, you should be good. MSS is a side zip, and I wish it had the front zip like the 1949. If you can only get one bag out if the MSS, I’d get the black one. Cold weather bag with the most room

@@TheCraftyCrowShow Good info. Thanks. I doubt I would ever need the whole system, but I thought one bag plus the bivy, to be on the safe side. Is the intermediate bag (black bag) plus bivy the same as black bag alone? Is bivy the limiting bag? Or just all the layers inside the bivy? I guess field bag is smallest, then intermediate then bivy? So maybe skip the field bag? Thanks again
@TheCraftyCrowShow
@TheCraftyCrowShow Жыл бұрын
I think it would be fair to say they go from a littke smaller to a little bigger. And the thickness of the bags when all together is definitely one of the limiting factors. Getting the intermediate bag and the bivy would probably be your best bet. If I hadn’t got the opportunity to get the entire set, that’s the route I would have went too
