My extensive Garden Railroad just sprouted another extension, a FUNICULAR.
It is such a simple looking, 6 meter long, addition, that it is hard to understand why it was such a formidable challenge to conceive and build. Two small, modified LGB cars are climbing alternately the 20 % grade.
The "Standseilbahn" is running on automatic with the help of an "Arduino" microprocessor. A friend helped with the programing. The guiding of the cable trough the complicated passing section was the biggest head-scatcher. The cars need to cross the Cable !
Make sure you watch the second half of the video. Enjoy

You are right, all the credit goes to Mr Abt. I just copied his idea, be it in a smaller scale. I try to make it look real, your comment says, I am getting close. Thank you for that.

Thanks. There are different ways to build a two car Funicular. The 4 -rail and the 3 -rail system are easier to design and build. But since I never avoid a challenge, I just had to pick the most involved, the 2 -rail system. The prototype was first created by a man called Abt.

Thank you for your comment. I have not been on the one in Quebec City. But I did ride one in Salzburg, in Paris and in Santiago, missed the one in Bergen and seen many more. They have them all over the world. However they are very rare on Garden Railroads ???

Using the double flange on the outside and a flangeless wheel on the inside is pure genius. Dubuque has a similar funicular but I believe it uses traditional flanges and has each car using two of three rails, splitting to four for the crossover.
@Landsend-Railroad
@Landsend-Railroad 8 ай бұрын
I looked up the Fenelon Co at Dubuque. They are using the simpler 3 rail system. There are basically three ways of getting the two cars past each other. A) The simple 4-rail sysyem. The two cars have their own tracks. B) The 3-rail System: Like the one you have in Dubuque. The two cars are sharing the center rail, except while passing. Simple standard flanged wheel are used. C) The 2-rail system which is the one I built. It uses two Abt-switches, which have no moving parts. The outer wheels look like pulleys and are guided by the continous outer rail. The inner wheels are flat and move over a number of gaps and the other car's cable without touching it. This last system is usually used when there is a long run invoved and/or the terrain does not allow room for 3 or 4 rails. Thanks for your comment.
@drewzero1

@@Landsend-Railroad I appreciate the explanation and extra context! Thanks! I thought the 2-rail system was especially clever for a model, because it could use standard track for all but a few sections, and only needs a little over half of the amount of track needed by the four-rail system. Whereas the three-rail system would need custom track for the entire length.
@Landsend-Railroad
@Landsend-Railroad 8 ай бұрын
The short center section was the tricky one to build. It took quite a bit of bending and cutting to get the wanted result. Beyond that you are quite right. The 2-rail system was the logical choice.

What plants are you using for dwarf size trees ??
@Landsend-Railroad
@Landsend-Railroad 9 ай бұрын
I use a great variety. Alberta spruce, heather, cryptomeria, box wood, lavender, azeleas and others. I have many Western Red Cedars, they seed themselves from large trees surounding my layout. They make good small trees and can also be trimmed into bushes and hedges, but need constant attention and pruning.

The instant turn-around had you puzzled? No perpetual motion here, just a clever edit. I did not want to show the static 15 second rest period programmed into the Arduino controller.
