I've visited Yosemite countless times and never knew the contributions made by the Chinese people! Thank you for sharing your research!

Isn't it interesting that the Chinese contributions have been written OUT of much of America. For example, the Chinese workers were not invited to the Golden Spike ceremony when the intercontinental railroad, building from the east to the west and west to the east, finally was finished when the 2 parts met and joined. And of course in 1882 came along the Chinese Exclusion Act, the most racist piece of immigration legislation in American history up to that point and even after. This goes to show the enormous valuable contributions that immigrants from all over the world have made to the building of America... so often unsung, unrecognized and would be forgotten but for folks like Yenyen and other researchers. America was and still is being made by immigrants. Thank you for making this video!

I practically grew up in Yosemite, and worked one summer at Glen Aulen high Sierra camp, and never ever heard the story of the important contribution of the Chinese workers who brought so much to the park. Thank you for a missing part of my Yosemite education!

this lady deserves an award for the memory of asian americans and the fact that we also help built america. so the next time some white guy or some black guy thinks asians didn't do squat to help this country. remember this video.

You should be far more upset with the "white guy or some black guy" who not only don't know that but keep pushing you and your kids out of schools because so many of Chinese descent work their butt off to learn so much and then get punished by University enrollment for showing such strong American work ethic to be replaced by pitied other groups who conversely don't work as hard in their studies. So yeah, them not knowing, no sweat off your brow, them being rewarded at University enrollment for ignorance, now there's your problem.

A wonderful, informative video about Chinese that were a vital part of the history of America! Yenyen is one face of how Chinese-Americans have assimilated and vital part of America. I was at Yosemite over 30 years ago and this video makes me want to return and visit the roads Ms.Chan talked about! Thank you!!

Yosemite National Park should pay homage to the Chinese and include them in their museums and exhibits, such as at the Visitors Center. I've been visiting Yosemite since the 1950's and never knew about the major contribution of the Chinese having built major roads that have made it possible for all the millions of visitors to gain access to Yosemite National Park. I get tired of all the hype about John Muir and the white settlers that turned Yosemite into a playground. It is typical of the white man to suppress historical information that involves native peoples as well as the hardworking Chinese folks that were a Proud people. One can only imagine what they were subjected to with disrespect and discrimination hurled at them from the white man. After all, look what happened to the Miwok natives that were murdered and shoved off their ancestral land, YOSEMITE.

So the parks asked a Chinese descent woman to do the research for Chinese people of the park, and that's NOT racist how?

To be racist, discrimination or prejudice against people of other races must be shown. Nothing about this is racist, except for the way the laborers were treated in the 1800's.

@@doncrozier Really, since when did all that get added to the definition? Pretty you don't have show a thing to be a racist, all you have to do is believe one group is better than another. If people want to be discriminatory based on race heck that doesn't even require being a racist, but it sure helps. Prejudice means to have preconceived ideas as in pre-judging. They picked her because of her race, because they believed she would be better, that's text book racism and prejudice with them acting as racists. They did it because they were prejudiced that she would be superiour because of her race. Yeah, they were/are prejudiced, racists regardless if she if liked the assignment. But hey, SJW's are changing the dictionary on a daily basis (peaceful protest means killing, burning looting and rioting as one example), and math too, now they are saying 2+2=5 all over Twitter and KZfaq, so anything is possible.

19th Century Chinese in America 4.5 months = 56 miles of completed road construction with only human powered tools. 21st Century Americans 4.5 months = 0 miles 0 feet 0 inches of completed road construction with all the glorious gas fueled machines. But hey, we are superiour to them because we have smart phones.
