Thanks for watching! Apologies for the rant, I'm just very passionate about knives. 😄
This Seahorse Whittler makes a great pocket knife! But is it a good whittler? I'm no expert on whittling so I would love to hear your thoughts on this knife's performance as a carver. Even if it isn't a good whittler, it's still beautiful! The Blue Denim Peach Seed Jig Bone makes it look and feel so wonderfully classic!

Great knife, most people don't know how to use it

Nice review. I own several Case knives of various styles, acquired over the years…and none of them have gapping. And, when I bought many of them, I didn’t even check to see if there were gaps. Just wasn’t on my radar. Of course, if there had been severe gapping, I would have refused them. Anyways, great every day knives made for a purpose.

Howdy!! I always love watching videos from people passionate about knives n such as I always learn a thing or two from them :) Loved seeing this knife compared to other similar knives, seeing the differences from other options is always important when picking the tool you plan on using. On to how I see the knife, as a dedicated whittler it isn't a great option. Sure, it's better than some other knives not designed for whittling but it fails to impress on all 3 blades. The main blade is way to thick for general whittling work. You can use it for roughing off some wood or stripping off bark, but for any real whittling to produce detail work the main blade just wont do. The smaller blades are way to flimsy to be using on anything harder than balsa wood and could be a liability if one were to seriously use them. It's almost like Case went from two extremes with no middle ground in-between. The vast majority of whittlers will use a knife in the middle of these two blades, closer to the thickness of the small blades but still not what comes on this knife. While the manufactures edge that came on the knife is acceptable (and better than most Case edges I have seen) it still isn't anywhere near sharp enough to whittle safely and needs proper sharpening. The main blade needs the edge angel reprofiled with a smaller edge angle and required much more work than the smaller blades. Compared to Flexcut out of the box or any of my other knives that I use for whittling, this knife comes to you dull and dangerous. To end this all off, I personally don't suggest this knife at all to anyone other than collectors. You are paying a premium for a sub par whittling knife. If you really want to get a Case knife for whittling, I prefer the Medium Stockman any day. It's a great 3 bladed knife with the blades I want. It may not have smaller detail blades, but it's way more effective whittler than the Seahorse Whittler.

Hiya! So happy to see you here! You pretty much confirmed what Anita said earlier. The knife is two bad extremes. Secondary blades are too flimsy, primary blade's too thick. I have the Flexcut and love it! Best carver out there. (IMO). The knife as a whole is pretty and may be a nice traditional pocket knife for cutting string or peeling apples, but it seems to fail as a whittler. Also, you should check out the Opinel No.7 Chestnut knife. I know you liked Opinels for carving, plus the one you used was a No.7. The No.7 Chestnut has a more optimal blade for carving use, Opinel said so themselves!

@@TheStreamingEnderman I love the design of the chestnut knife, but really want a carbon steel varient for better edge retention on the edges I give my knives. Sent em an email about it last year, probably time to make a follow-up email.

Ah, I see! Opinel should do some new blade shapes on their clsssic carbon knives. Oh, another carver you may like is the A. Wright and Son Ettrick. It's only downside is a soft steel...

@@TheStreamingEnderman it looks like it has C70 steel and they harden up quite nicely if done right. Guess this is another knife I need to get my hands on and check out!

I could give you more options, but I don't want to kill your wallet. 😁 But still, the Otter Messer Webermesser should work as a whittler. A nice knife from Germany!

Great video! About my experience with a seahorse whittler, the main blade is indeed to thick for whittling. And the two smaller blades are to flimsy. They have to much flex. But for an edc knive and whittling a stick for passing some time, it will do just fine. But, it is a beautiful knive! I gave mine away to another whittler, and although I do not regret that I am on the hunt for another seahorse. About scratching on the blades, it is actually pretty normal for a Case to have bladerub. Thanks for the shout out! 🌷

Hi Anita! Thanks for stopping by to watch the video! I kinda figured the main blade was too thick. I didn't want to say it was "bad", in case I was wrong. The secondary blades are quite bendy, which is slightly scary for whittling. I appreciate the clarity on the blades and the mention about the blade scuffing. Thanks again for stopping by!

I have this one in (wait for it...) Olive Green Fence Row Jigged Bone (a 2019 issue), and like yours it's well executed (for a Case!) - one slight bit of bone missing next to the liner but you have to look hard to see it. No proud springs though! I might have to pick something up in that Blue Denim JB, it looks great. Curiously, the only Case I have that I would describe as flawless is a Swayback Gent, again same as you. Do try to get hold of the GEC equivalent you mentioned, the #38 Old English Whittler. Mine's in Bloodwood and it's just beautiful - plus, it's a Splitback, which the Case isn't - and the bladestock on its Wharncliffe is much thinner. BTW the difference between Coping and Sheepfoot blades is the curved top corner on the Sheepfoot, which is angular on the Coping. I reckon some blade rub is inevitable on any knife where opposing blades are packed closely into the same bladewell - I'll use your method of first opening the mainblade before accessing the secondaries if I'm concerned about blade rub, but I wouldn't get to hung up about it - it's inherent in the design - happens with GEC too! Yes, Opinels take a lot of beating. Walnut #6 Inox is my backpacking carry (only 25g weight), and #9 the best (and cheapest!) fishing knife I've ever had. Got your Padouk in the #8 - very smart, but I prefer the non-polished blades on an Opinel.

I appreciate the long comment! That GEC in Bloodwood is a Grail for me. I really want one! I know they're often better than Case, but hey...Case can make a good knife, too! It isn't perfect, but this one is excellent. The flaws are excusable, I suppose. I like bone handles, but just prefer wood. Also, Opinels are amazing, I'm glad you agree! Cheers!

Beautiful knife man but a terrible whittler I have the Case Turquoise Curly Maple and was so excited about it but it was a dud as a whittler so I bought a Whittling Jack and it’s a great whittler that many or most of the whittling channels suggest Anyway the pro pocket knife company Whittlers are beautiful and collectible so why not? Thanks for another sweet show pal!

I have one in green bone, it’s pretty , I love the main blade but the weak lock up on the smaller blades make it a bit dicey as an all purpose whittler. Wish the fit was a bit better to be honest. Yours looks a bit better lock up . Nice presentation as always .

I thoroughly enjoyed that vid. Thanks. It's just a personal thing, but I cant help thinking the Seahorse is as close as you'll get to the original Wharncliffe knife - if you removed the smaller blades. I've read that one of the Wharncliffe's requirements, during design, was to be able to baton, hence the buttressed blade. Batoning switches for traps etc, not logs for fires, I'd imagine, although I've not tried it out. I only have a Queen Wharncliffe, which in silhouette looks like my idea of a Wharncliffe knife, but there is no robustness to it. Just as an aside, I was looking recently at a trade card from a London Cutler, kept at the British Museum. In the corner is a knife with what looks like a Wharncliffe. Actually, it looks like the Seahorse blade. Except it can't be, the trade card is dated at c1780, and the Wharncliffe wasn't invented until he 1820s. Ahem! Nothing new under the sun as they say.

I see your point. But I believe Slick's idea is correct. With the Ettrick being the first Wharncliffe pattern. Again, I'm not sure if this is 100% the case, but it seems logically sound.

@@TheStreamingEnderman I remember that vid. I'll have to go bck and refresh my memory. I honestly thought he'd proposed that the Ettrick was a development of the Wharncliffe. I could easily of misunderstood.

Perhaps it was I who misunderstood! But from what I remember, he said the Ettrick was propably the closest thing to the original Wharncliffe knife. Again, don't quote me on that.
