Discovered Shakti within the last year after Sungazer played Vital Transformation by Mahavishnu Orchestra on their tour with Plini last year. John McLaughlin is a nutty genius. I'll have to look into the others in this band

Shakti was the group that got me into carnatic music, and non-western music in general. Forced me to rethink a ton of stuff. I'm so happy this is a topic for one of your videos! And I have to mention Yogev's time playing in the Berklee Indian and World Music ensembles. I knew you from Distorted Harmony but seeing you play in those groups exposed me to a lot more stuff to appreciate.

The listener dictates nothing, and thats the beautiful part about it. If the tempo was meant to be unchanged, which I would argue was the intent, the listener just gets to enjoy the ride they get put on!

While we're on the topic of complicated Grammy-winning songs, I feel like The Alien should be mentioned. (Even though I'm really pissed that after years of making awesome music, they get the Grammy for such a mediocre song)

I wanted to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for your exceptional teaching. Your ability to break down such a highly complex and dynamically changing rhythmic structure was truly remarkable. Although I found myself grappling to understand even the first level of the intricacies you presented, I was profoundly impressed by your mastery and depth of understanding across multiple layers of complexity. Your passion and dedication to the subject were evident, and it inspired me to continue exploring and learning, even when the material feels challenging. Thank you for making such an effort to share your knowledge and for making complex concepts more accessible to learners like me. Your work is not only enlightening but also incredibly motivating. -ChatGPT

Yogev, as you know I love your videos (and your music). But I'm a little mystified why you decided to analyse a piece using Carnatic rythmic structures by using western concepts instead of looking at it from the perspective of Carnatic talas. Of course, you can do that, but it's not likely that the musicians themselves are approaching it from a "time signature + tempor" perspective ....

Great question ! I grew up as a western musician and I'm very comfortable with it's boundaries. And while yes, usually I'll make a big deal about analyzing music with the wrong "tools", I feel like in this instance they still overlap nicely. Did you feel anything I said was wrong or misleading ?

It is impossible for me to hear the intro as anything other than 7-7-6, with a 4-tuple over the 6 count. Beat is at 192. Sorry man, 5/4 is a big ask.
@nomnom112
@nomnom112 24 күн бұрын
The thing is, these are Indian classical rhythms and the time signature is a Western concept. So this whole exercise is quite a stretch.

NGL was kinda frustrated w this video... 1:20… you never play the full section, you keep breaking it up to count, and then when you do play the 7+3 together you count over it. We never get to hear the relationship of the 7 to the 3, which is key since the 3 is all downbeats. Let us soak in the full cycle before you superimpose on top on it. (as for the 5/4, I hear it as 14/8-14/8-12/8 with a duplet-triplet dynamic). 2:35… I hear this as 8/8+7/8, with the highest note being the downbeat. At 3:30 you count it in double-time, uncomfortable tempo, no numbers or rhythms to be seen on screen. 4:45… Describing metric modulation verbally is a wild choice considering this is THE absolute #1 channel for visual metaphors of rhythm. I understand it already but could not follow the explanation (yeah I'm a visual learner). In the end I'm unconvinced this is a 5/4... I'm hearing it at half the tempo you describe, in a slinkier groove that suits the awesome music, and 40 can be subdivided like a million ways, so I prefer to choose a time sig that describes the music not just counts it. I dunno, love this channel, this one kinda lost me, felt like a rough draft.
