Ah the blessing of living in an area where industry was commonplace. I live in the south, in an area where agriculture, not industry, was prevalent. There are no auctions like this of any kind here. Rarely, a machine shop or small manufacturing plant goes on the block, but most items are to large or specialized for a home shop. 1000 miles+ is just too far to go garage sale or auction hunting. I get excited when I see your expeditions and then sad when I realize I'll never see one in real life.

Yeah I had to choose between what I wanted and where to get it. Here in Louisiana there aren't many small machines. To get my homeshop together I traveled to Illinois, Virginia, North Carolina and Texas to get what I wanted. Looking back it was worth it though. As always Mr. Pete, awesome score yet again.

I had to travel 2400 km total to pick up my Bridgeport Mill because there were none in my area, and it was well worth it. I ended up picking up a metal band saw which really added to my metal hobby shop.

Good score Mr. Pete. We RARELY have these auctions in South Texas. Every once in awhile some rancher will pass away and his kids will auction everything off. Hundreds of bidders show up, and run prices up to crazy levels. More like a carnival event with food trucks, etc. Expect to see jugglers and firewaters at the next one.

This gives me an idea of what is gonna happen to my so precious tools when I'm gone... If the silver solder is in the range of 45% silver or over, it's worth much more than you paid for the whole lot, nice purchase... Guess that when we get to be seniors, we can say and do things and not worry about being taken seriously, " NO MORE AUCTIONS............" 🤓🦽🤣🤣🤣 P.S. Anything you do weird, just make sure you keep your pants on.... Then the family may lock you up, then, no more auctions for real.... 😁😁😁

If I have to rate my favorite things in this channel, it will be 1) Auctions; 2) Metal Castings; 3) Fixing stuff/ making chips; 4) Tutorials. Probably a bunch of people said it already, but that coaxial indicator is a Blake. The absolutely best made coaxial. All others od this style are copies of this Blake. What I find interesting is that I've never seen any other tools made by Blake. They seem to be a company content with making one item very well, and have not changed the design in ages. You can buy aftermarket contact probes online. Blake also offers repair and restoration services for these. Over the years I've had several of these pass through my hands, and each time I came across one with a contact point I didn't already have, I'd add it to my set, and sell off the rest. I'm amazed at how many different lengths and styles they offered. Most are straight or bent rods of various lengths, but one is a short spring loaded point for locating the spindle directly over a center punch mark. $5 is an absolute steal for that, I'm so jealous, congratulations.
@mrpete222
@mrpete222 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am aware that that brand is the best, thank you. Where do I buy the contact points? eBay? Or some other source. The contact points from my Chinese one, do not fit in the Blake

Hmmm, seems ordering them direct from Blake's website might be cheaper if buying new. There is a seller on Ebay selling points for the blake for $15 each. At this price, they've got to be aftermarket.

I need to bet a big truck with a big trailer and head out that way for auctions. $5 for a milling machine and no one wanted that big drill press. I coul bring them back here, mark them up 100x and still have people beating down the door. 2 of the 3 big industrial plants here closed 15-20 years ago and everything was either scrapped(heard about brnd new huge air compressors, still on the pallet being scrapped, due to liability of selling them) orthe other place, everything was abandoned. Had a couple coworkers go on a special assignment last year and the new owner was literally telling them to take whatever they wanted as it was on them to get rid of it. Heard most of its still there as they weren't using that part of the building and one of the contractors that comes into work and was also on that job was going to place a bid on it all.

If the lathe and the Bridgeport came with all the extras on them shown in the video then the prices were good. Most auctioneers separate down to the bare bones making you bid 100 times more and likely loose out. Those large verniers bring back memories. A old timer who has been gone for over 30 years now had a set hanging on he his shop wall. I think he did some large cylinder boring at one time. He kept them in great condition.

You would never see an auction like this in Mobile Alabama or anywhere near Mobile. If it's not on Craigslist or FB Marketplace then you go to the robbers on eBay. The word "Vintage" triples the price. I saw 4 or 5 pieces of 1/4" brass welding rod in the original brown paper wrapping listed for $200.00 because it was of course Vintage BS. I started our Oxygen/Acetylene Welding using 1/4" rods was an everyday thing. What kind of idiot would even consider some old brass rods that you can buy at your local Welding Supply for a few bucks???? I think the lathe went for a fair price and the mill, both had a lot of tooling to sweeten the deal. Thanks Mr. Pete, can't wait to see the next one you go to.

Mr. Pete You really did good at the auction! You are lucky to be living in an awesome place to find great tools for auction/for sale. Do you happen to know where a good small starter shop Metal Lathe is for sale? 6” to 8” X at least 20” no longer then 30” In good condition? I’ve been looking here in Texas and was 10 mins late calling before someone beat me to a really nice old Atlas lathe...in great condition with A lot of tooling and extra gears and screw making gears & several manuals. I almost cried. If I’m not mistaken I believe I bought 3 classes from you on thumb drives a few years ago. I was recuperating from my 6th back surgery and those 3 thumb drives keep me busy learning. I just wanted to say Thank you so very much! I got a lot of great information! 1. How to run an Atlas lathe. 2. How to run a bridge port mill. 3. Machine shop tips. Excellent learning materials!!! You should sell them again, I know people would buy them. Let me know if you find a good metal lathe for sale, please. I’d really hate to buy.a brand new one. I feel the older ones are much better. I’ll check back with you since I’m now retired from my job of 35 years....and my back just couldn’t take the 12 hrs shifts anymore. Thanks Mr Pete. P.S. Thanks for the hard work in making and sharing your knowledge through the “you tube” videos! J-Ray

Hi Mr. Pete I’m glad I was able to. Connect with you. As far as the lathe I will keep my eyes open for one. And yes sir if I find one I’ll have to have it shipped to me. A few years ago I purchased a blacksmith power hammer, I had it shipped. From Florida for around $800. It’s a nice one. Anyway glad to hear that your doing ok, and still helping people On you tube with the videos you make. You take care and God Bless. P.S. I still remember all my shop teachers! All great teachers that went the extra mile to help me learn and understand. I have a lot of respect them!

Lyle. the vice you say runs backward, is I think been taken apart and reassembled wrong. I think that the handle should be on the fixed jaw side. It is insane the way it is now with the handle between the guide bars, and all the end pressure is on the retaining ring.

I agree, but I did take it apart and try it the other way. And it cannot be done. I think it might be homemade, and somebody screwed it up from the start

Re the milling cutters you missed... You gotta really pay attention when they're selling off the wagons, the auction helpers just grab stuff to sell in any old order! If that really is silver solder, I'm pretty sure it's worth more than $50.

I guess I am getting old and sentimental but I still miss seeing the rams head on the hood of your truck. I usually keep a vehicle between 15 and 20 years.

No matter what you say, you enjoy going and bidding. I also enjoy it with you. The part I don't like is you complaining. grit your teeth, gird your loin and boldly go forth and enjoy yourself.

Lots of good stuff Mr Peterson. That speed vise is beat pretty bad but do you guys think one could repair the jaws by building them back up with weld beads? I'm sure it's cast iron but it might be worth repairing
