Lots of comments here saying how useless it is to offer a MIDI controller without MIDI ports. While I too wish it had them, please understand that the LaunchControl XL was designed and marketed specifically as an Ableton Live controller - not a general-purpose MIDI controller. The fact that it can be used as such is merely a bonus. Of course the LaunchPad and LaunchControl devices could have power supplies and MIDI I/O, but they would then become heavier and nearly twice as thick. Compare for instance with the Behringer BCF-2000 or Korg PadControl. I too prefer devices designed for maximum inter-operability. But I can understand why not all are made this way. Cost is a poor reason, but IMO size, weight, and power for portable devices can be reasonable considerations.

A really good MIDI din alternative to the Launch Control XL is the Novation ReMote series. Sadly, they are out of production but easily got on the second hand market. The SL series of ReMote's have 2 MIDI out, MIDI thru, MIDI in and USB! Also, the keyboard versions rock a Fatar keybed!

Consider combining it with a FaderHost from Expert Sleepers in your modular. They are meant for each other.

I completely agree on your point about having a real MIDI in and out, on the control XL. ~ If it had that, I could hook a Circuit and my I-pad up to the XL at the same time . . . And that's what I really want !

I grabbed this unit a few years back. Its built like a brick and is wonderful for use with generative and modular soft synths, like Cherry Audio's Voltage.

You can change the colours of the buttons by sending MIDI messages to them. It's kindof clunky but it is possible (though it perhaps only works if the LCXL is connected to a computer so you can choose what MIDI you're routing back to the unit). There are details in the LCXL programming guide.

Bo, I've been looking for a MIDI controller like this for a while but I am mostly going to use the controller with my DAW. Since I use more than 8 channels on projects and switch between projects often, motorised faders are kind of a must. Analogue faders wouldn't do simply because it would reset the levels everytime when I adjust a channel's volume on the controller. I have no idea where to look, since motorised faders are more on a digital mixer kinda grounds. Do you have experience with MIDI controllers with features such as motorised faders?

Can you use this to switch patches/favorites on a hardware RACK Synth such as Roland JV/XV if you get the midi adapter device ?

It’s smart to have no screen to keep production costs low, but a “midi controller” without midi port is a bummer.

@BoBeats, have you tried mapping the knob LEDs? They don't respond to the same control messages as the knobs, unlike the pads/buttons which do. I've reported this issue to Novation and they don't seem to care, as they released the mk2 and it's still the same. Ended up selling mine over this issue.

What do you think about studio one pro version four? I used it until the version 3 range drove me to uninstall it . Don’t you think there should be a real full blown version of everything that is available on a regular computer? For iOS? I do and when I compare the Mobile version of say GarageBand/ Logic mobile. I prefer the iOS version and I think it’s a better choice for songwriting . Cubase is also available on iOS called cubasis . Peace Christo

I wish NI made something this size that is just a NKS controller with knobs and their color OLED screens (no Maschine). I hade Kore 2 at one time.

I like the feel it has. But I experienced a high (~11kHz ) noise on my recordings when the LaunchControl XL was plugged into the same USB hub as my Audio interface! I thought my interface was broken until I realized that...

at 3:13 you mentioned you're doing a 'control all thing'... is that the same as the 'Ctrl-All' you can do on the Digitakt hardware? Have you mapped that function to the controller? Thanks.

A combination of this unit and Beatstep Pro anybody? Last few days having a lot of fun with Beatstep Pro and KArp Odyssey. The BSP was very easy to learn and the touch sensitive knobs are genius. The Odyssey keeps amazing me although is not as straightforward to learn as any substractive synthesis manchine. But it can sound seriously big and even out of control (in a good way) with Sample & Hold.

Between this vid and Mr. Tinez use of this with the Black Box I got a Launch Control XL but the software doesn't seem to want to work with the latest MacOS, so it's totally useless to me until they fix that! :(

I want a 16 track version, but since that doesn't exist, I ordered my second LaunchControl, which actually arrives later today. Fingers crossed that they won't conflict in software somehow.

I ordered a Keystep a couple of nights ago after watching the mylarmelodies video. Might have a bit of a wait as they seem to be out of stock all over. Fingers crossed it will be ok. Arturia's controller hardware can be hit and miss quality-wise from what I hear. WIll there be a livestream later? Missed it last week and there was no Sonic Talk either. One thing I never understood about the Launch control is why they put pots on instead of encoders. It would have been so useful to be able to scroll left and right in tracks in ableton and have the encoders automaticly be set to the right values.
