My first real hifi amplifier purchase was the NAD 320BEE integrated amplifier. The NAD C338 Hybrid Digital DAC Integrated Amplifier reminds me of my favorite amplifiers from NAD Electronics. The NAD C 338 DAC amplifier has almost everything an audiophile needs to build a hifi system in 2021.

Class-D amps these days I think get to have a seat at the table of Hi-Fi. Sure there will always be the purists and hold outs, but if I can get a meaningful, powerful, performance out of an amp that doesn't moonlight as a space heater and requires a fork lift to move, I'm all for it! One feature I wish NAD had included with this integrated is AirPlay. Yeah you have Chromecast, but it's not supported on Amazon HD so sadly it doesn't work in my use case.

Hi Andrew It’s about time you did more NAD ....(Napoleon dynamite rolls eyes)....lol I too started my “real” hi- fi journey with an old integrated I bought 30yrs ago. Once I went NAD, I am kind of a lifer now. I just purchased a C368 with an NAD C588 table and RP-8000F’s I Can report back once I get it all setup. That being said, class D is here to stay, NAD has invested a great deal into their class D designs and they aren’t everyone else’s designs. I may look to upgrade the phono stage to another model and eventually add the blue sound or HDMI ports. Keep up the great content, you are top of the heap with your channel, productions and reviews I give all the credit to your wife!!

My favorite part is actually the conversation they have at the end of the reviews. I love hearing their input and just coversating about both their thoughts. Especially because his wife is new to all of it, kinda bridges what a conversation with a non-audiophile and an audiophile would have. They both share a love for music and they’re explaining what they each hear, yet still relating to most of the same aspects.

I own the C368. Regarding build quality: from factory is poor. The C368 came from factory with loose screws rattling around inside the unit. I had to disassemble and screw down the freely moving about screws from all the circuit boards as the circuit boards were only mounted by 1 or 2 screws as a result. The screws all seemed to loosen up from shipping, not a single screw was tight. 1 screw was completely missing (could not be found). I called NAD customer support to have them ship me the missing screw and left 2 voice mail messages, nobody returned my calls. The speaker connectors are made of cheap plastic and their is no speaker post support. If you are connecting speaker wires with banana plugs, be aware the connection point on back of NAD C368 will greatly flex to an uncomfortable level upon making the connection. Regarding sound quality: It is excellent. I also agree with Andrew's review regarding the DAC performance. I listen mostly to rock and jazz. The NAD DAC sounds "clinical" to me. If I front-end the signal with the Schiit Bi-frost 2, wow, just wow. The music really comes alive as if you are physically in the studio room. The NAD BlueOS and streaming services are also A+ features and work flawlessly. My summary is: excellent features, excellent sound quality, no customer support, questionable factory assembly. After all of that, the unit seems to work just fine after 8 months, but I still would like my missing screw from NAD.

I had the C338's big brother - NAD C 388 Hybrid Digital DAC Amplifier powering a pair of Polk LSiM 705's. I ran this for about 6 months. For me it felt like something was missing. I swapped out the C 388 for a Cambridge CXA81. Even though I gave up many features and some power to the C 388 - I found the CXA81 to be a much better fit for me. A fuller sound with a bigger sound stage. About six years ago I had an excellent NAD C 375BEE. The 375BEE was a strong integrated that hit above it's class. Based on my experience I preferred the NAD class A/B designs.

@@TheMatsushitaMan This is my third system that runs music for a vacation home and I consider most integrated's in this price range (I picked up the CXA81 for $995USD) having a shelve life and being "semi-disposable", although I might think about recapping when needed. I found that the C388 was a little rolled off in the top end and slightly soften some of bass. In the end NAD's implementation of the Hypex’s “Ultimate Class D” (or ucD) power module didn't do it for me. My primary listening system revolves around a T+A PA3100HV integrated.

Good insight into this NAD integrated. One of my early amplifiers during my college period was the NAD 302 base amplifier which I cut my teeth on my music listening journey. I still keep the 302 and it now makes music for my kids in their bedroom but with a Bluetooth audio receiver. The recent improvements in AptX and better Bluetooth audio receivers also had me adding in a BT box for the boys to stream and listen to content from their tablets and cellphones.

I have the NAD C-388 that fits my needs flexibly to upgrade with various Modules and drive my Dynaudio speaker very well and to shine they do need power! I had the NAD S-300 for 20 years a nice warm-sounding amp. But innovation moves on and the 388 has it all in what I like and need.

My first receiver was a Sony 25watt receiver. Not enough power, but a very sweet sound. I replaced it with an NAD 7130. Same amps section (I am told) as the 2030 integrated amp. I liked the 7130 a lot, but it's tuner section wasn't as clean sounding as the Sony. A number of years later, I still had it around the house. It's speaker selector switch was causing issues and could not easily be replaced. A friend gave me a pair of Infinity RS2.5s. I ran those with a larger amp for a while (those infinity speakers are very power hungry). But I soon switched the big main amps back to my regular speakers. Not wanting to totally abandon the Infinities, I connected them to the NAD 7130. While extremely loud volumes of sound were not possible, it was this combination that sliced the most sweet sounds.

Bought this amp 6 month ago replacing NAD C316. Really a different sound.. but so good ! Sound really clean and yes there is little less dynamic compare to the classe AB C316 but the sound is so smooth, there is just something about it that is nice and warm.. and it really is good to listen for hours it's never getting annoying to listen to. I was worried about the classe D amp but they seriously make something good out of it. I was tired for looking for ''THE AMP'' under 1000$ . This amp is good for all kind of music and plug the TV in the interne DAC for movie and was really suprised, big sound coming out of it. !! Anyway really good amp overall.

Hi Andrew , I Bought the NAD C 316 BEE with the Bluesound NODE , in my case using my previously purchased DALI OBERON 7 speakers , and the result was and is magic !!! It's amazing how that little amp drives the Oberon 7 speakers with only 40W RMS but with more than 200 of Damping Factor !!! , I prefer the punch of the NAD class AB with the beautiful Toroidal Transformer inside, (I have sold my new NAD C 368 80 W class D Amp with the inside Bluesound 2i card previously purchased ) ,The NAD C 316 BEE has a different mood of sound, is hard to explain, and I think sounds much more harmonic, robust in the pounch to my ears and also much warmer with the Oberon 7 over the Class D Hipex Hibrid AMP like the NAD C 368 that I have solded, I always watch your interesting videos and I learn a lot with your logic, I am a subscriber, Thank you very Much !!!! Greetings from Argentina !!!

Great review. Like others here, I appreciated the conversation segment. My first amp was the original NAD 3020 which I bought new in the late 70s. It served me reliably for forty years and I only sold it when I moved from Oz to the US. During that time I also owned a much more expensive audiophile amp which, although intellectually "better", I never found as emotionally satisfying as the little NAD. The $500 to $1000 integrated space is pretty hotly contested. By my reckoning, there are 42 amps from 28 manufacturers available from US-based retailers in this range. (That is integrateds only and doesn't include receivers.) Manufacturers include many-storied firms such as Arcam, Audiolab, Cambridge, Creek, Denon, ELAC, Leak (without the case), Marantz, Musical Fidelity, Pro-Ject, Rega, Rotel, TEAC, and Yamaha. A real embarrassment of riches. I contend we are living in a golden age of hi-fi. Limiting the selection to integrateds with DACs still yields 30 amps from 20 manufacturers. If the field is further restricted to those with phono preamps, and WIFI - the pickings are pretty slim. Just the NAD, Marantz PM7000N and Peachtree decco25 SKY. The latter two are c. $300 more expensive than the NAD. So the NAD looks like a rare bargain.

I have been living with a C338 for six years and I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with it. Before I describe my experience with it, I need to point out that I don't play vinyl so I have no comment to make on the phono stage or how well it pairs. *What I love about it:* - Connectivity is excellent, though I'd have preferred one or two more analogue inputs because I have a few old bits and pieces I've collected over the years but I'm being lazy. For most people this will not matter a jot. The WiFi implementation is excellent. - Grunt. Power is fantastic. I had a NAD 3020B before the C338 and it always required bass boost. The C338 doesn't and I've never used it. In contrast to your experience, I had zero need to crank up to levels above what I was used to. This thing is a beast. Matched to a pair of Dynaudio X34s, It creates a big sound, not lacking in subtlety but responding with lightning speed and precision. *What I don't love about it:* - Very clinical (well, the amp's job is to amplify, not colour the sound). This amplifier has very low tolerance for poor recording. Since I listen to more classical than modern, this tends to be less of a problem. But to compare a classical recording to a remastered digital recording can really highlight the problems. I have some Deutsche Grammophon 'Archiv' recordings from the 1980s which were incredibly well done, all-digital recordings of stunning sonic purity. I recently compared them directly to a remaster of Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' and the comparison was revealing in ways a lot of people won't like. Too bad. The Pink Floyd remaster sounded like it was recorded on cardboard. It was flat and colourless - totally at odds with everything I've come to know of that band - while the 'Archiv' recordings just soared and rolled beautifully past me with an unmatched soundstage and presence. The C338 takes no prisoners. - The Burr-Brown DAC is a bit hit or miss for me. After six years I'm still unsure so I'm messing around with a third party DAC to see if I can identify the problem. - No USB input. This was not a problem when I bought it but it has become a problem now. My fault to some extent because I didn't see it coming. On the other hand, I have work arounds. If you're a classical listener, you might find this to your liking. It's very precise but intolerant of anything but the best quality recordings. For a lot of modern music it can make the spotty-faced 20 year-old producer genius look like an idiot... Don't start me on loudness wars. I don't recommend this to beginners in hifi. It's just too unforgiving. But for more experienced and selective listeners who are prepared to spend time matching it to the rest of their system and their room, it can be a great amp. I found the finish to be inferior - by some margin - to the 3020B it replaced and inferior to the likes of Arcam but I also think it is easily good enough for the money.

The NAD C-338 is really nice, and it is on my shortlist now. And as likable as I find the NAD C-338 to be, for just a few hundred dollars more, I am also liking the Marantz PM7000N. Has the around the same amount of amplifier power as the NAD C-338, but in addition, has a toroidal transformer and dual separate power supplies, has fully discrete current feedback, and has a 24-bit/192kHz high resolution streamer built-in with HDAM-SA3 circuitry and an AK4090EQ DAC (all built into one package). Also has a built-in M/M Phono Stage. AND ALL FOR… $1,200.00 All I got to is add speakers, turntable/phono cartridge and a small subwoofer or two to round out the whole system (I got a Turntable and a TV already), and for a little over $3,500.00, I’ll have a complete system then. What do you think about this piece Andrew & Kristi? -Charles-

Thanks! I looked at a number of integrated amps with my main criteria being streaming. I'd been familiar with the NAD name but never had any of their products. I decided to try the C368 BluOS. At first I was very disappointed in the bass response, but it took nearly a month for the amp to really open up. I am, however, driving a pair of power hungry Amphion Helium 2's with it, and the 80 watts still needs to be cranked to pick out details. The sound has become excellent and I agree that the soundstage is a bit compressed, especially compared to my Parasound/Paradigm combo in the loft. That soundstage envelopes the entire room :-)

The NAD 3140 integrated amp was the amp the put NAD on the audio map. The 3140 was a 40 watt amp that sounded like 100 watts and performed like one also . i don’t have any experience with a class D amp, but i really like that this nad sounds good, runs cool, and is power efficient. i use an old receiver that gets hot after awhile of listening and i’m sure that doesn’t help with the energy bill. if the nad can help with that, i’m open to it as another option to consider over other AB integrated amps.

Great review as always thx! If I was starting over, this amp would be on my shortlist. The lack of USB is my only gripe on paper. Suggestion: Mrs. Robinson should state her opinion first in the conversation and prompt you to react. I think it would feel a bit more natural with her being off camera. Especially since you guys agree on most points, it feels a bit off when she reiterates some of your points off camera. I look forward to the next one!

One of my first integrated amps just came back into my life today! Yamaha R-30 that got me through a few decades and then sat idle for a few more. Also retrieved my first good speakers, Paradigm 5se. A dusty pair but otherwise they look good. Time to hook it all up and see if my sonic memory stretches over 30 odd years.

@@trent_nathan3889 Well normally I would not respond to a question like this HOWEVER it is a great question. Being a broadcast engineer for coming up on 30 years now I can tell you that indeed it is possible for some electronic parts to how was it said, to break in. It is not that they are breaking in however it isn't uncommon in the engineering world (And I am talking about actually designing the circuits not just repairing them) to see certain electronic components change value when run for a while. For a simple way to put it lets just use the biasing circuit for something like output transistors. Lets pretend this, a component like a simple resister helps control the biasing of a transistor in the audio chain. Well after 500 hours of use or whatever it might be now the resister has changed value from heat or maybe it was part of a bad batch that was made. I know a lot about this I buy them by the hundreds at a time or used to. Anyway the bias resister changes value so instead of it being lets say 25K at 2 watts it is now 35k so the resistance went up and now it changed the operating characteristics of that transistor in the audio chain which can and does have a effect on the sound output. This happens way more than most people would think not only in amps but in everything these days the example I gave what is a VERY simple example but it goes to show that yes it is entirely possible for that to happen.

I have version 1 of the 316 which includes bass and treble controls and has much better volume knob in my opinion. After about 3 months of listening, I knew I wanted a little more in detail. At low everyday listening volumes.. it’s lacking something. Honestly don’t know if it’s the speakers or amp. The remote leaves a lot to be desired. I don’t have anything really to negative to say about it, just the feeling of wanting a little more.

Great review, Andrew. To answer your question about newer or older, I have to go with the older class A/B, for a few reason. First- it's class D. 'nuff said. Second- The 338 is an integrated amp? NAD dropped the ball on that spec. No tone controls at all, so it appears it's an amp. Coming from the old(er) gen of class A/B, the 314, 317, and 319, have the same design principals, yet, have tone controls, and using Cerwin Vega VE-12's connected to any of the 3 mentioned, you don't need to turn the volume much at all to let the neighbors (across the street) know you're home. NAD had a unique approach to using tone control, in that, the bass and treble controls were not to affect the midrange at all. Leaving that section out of the 338, would seem to prove they still follow that standard. Having that section added to the 338, would solve that treble roll off and the shyness of the bass. I've been a fan of NAD for years, the bass is always detailed and full the highs clear but not shrill. If you get the chance to test drive the older class A/B series, give it a shot. They definitely leave an impression on you. Thanks.

It's a little know fact that most high end Class D amplifiers have their origin in the Netherlands and Belgium with those companies all originating to the same company. As a Dutch guy, I am a bit proud of that fact! I switched to d&b Audio D12 Class D amplifiers back in 2003 for my pro audio needs and could definitely hear and feel a difference with P1200s that I had been using up until then. Like a blanket had been lifted from my speakers. Nicer and tighter bass, more detailed and refined mids and highs and more control over the speakers. Plus a huge weight saving which helps with setting up your system 2 times a night. For home use in my living room I recently switched from a Denon AVR-1706 to a Marantz M-CR412, mostly because I only have and had a 2.0 stereo system and wanted to have a compacter and weight-friendlier system. All of the benefits I experienced before when switching to the D12s applied. In fact, I liked it so much that my old DENON PMA-525R in my study/home office (which I had for over 25 years) got the boot and was replaced with another Marantz M-CR412. I was planning on buying Denon RCD-M41DAB or Onkyo but decided to spend the extra cash as I knew what I was getting and I already was more than happy with that. So happy days!

The best hifi I listened for the price is yet a pair of Sonos One connected in stereo. You need to have an iPhone to complete the configuration with their intuitive TruePlay equalizer but then you get the most incredibly well balanced sound possible and this deep tight bass sounds incredible. Limits are your only source will be your iPhone but for 400 $ you probably don’t get anything sounding better

First of all, I'm also an NAD fan. My second amp was an NAD, and I used it happily for 20+ years. Having said that, yes, someone who uses a phono front end with something like an Ortofon 2M Black (your choice) would likely want a better phono stage. But the cost of that cartridge alone is close to the price of the NAD! IOW, not a likely match.

Great reveiw! I was choosing between this and the H/K Citation Digital Amplifier to connect to my KEF LS50s (old ones). This because of the chromecast integration both amplifiers have and the ability to connect it to my already existing Google-ecosystem. I ended up choosing the Citation amp because of the higher wattage specification since I thought the LS50s would need it. I'm not so sure I made the right choice though. Would be very interesting to see you (or anyone else for that matter) to review the H/K Citation amp. I think it's the direct competitor to the popular sonos systems and fits right into that demographic that wants a good TV-soundsystem, and multiroom capability.

I like the remote because it fits the minimalistic, digital approach. One thing you should consider when you buy one of these is that the „Bass EQ“ function is useless. I tested the frequency response with LS 50 Metas. Without Bass EQ on, the bass starts audible at 20hz, even though not very loud. With Bass EQ turned on the bass is cut and starts to be audible from 39hz! And a lot more silent even after 39hz. Upper bass is boosted but you completely loose the range that makes you not need a subwoofer with speakers that have the potential to do that. If you dont use a subwoofer never turn Bass EQ on. Also there is no bluetooth security so your neighbour could connect to your NAD and destroy your speakers while you are not at home. Just take the left antenna off (Bluetooth). That will reduce the range to your room. Thanks for the great review. What microphone and post processing are you using? Sennheiser MKH 416? It is the best sounding KZfaq channel I ever heard!
