5:26 - third part (in the car)
8:52 - fourth part (yums and chews)
10:41 - fifth part (tired baby)
Harvey is a part of our family, not an accessory to it. Therefore, he receives the care and attention that reflects such a position, which includes the necessary adjustments and compromises from us. Parrots/Conures require diligent care and attention, which might include forfeiture, on your part, of common daily habits and practices. If you can’t accommodate their needs, then please, reconsider bringing one into your home. Additionally, because so many succumb to neglect, there are many that find themselves abandoned or relinquished, waiting for someone who has the responsibility and patience they need; therefore, adoption remains an overlooked option, as to shopping, but can provide a profound opportunity for both human and bird. These little guys can live a long time, enriching your life exponentially, but only if you do your part.
------------------------------------------------------
At 0:22 --
Harvey never played with these toys unsupervised. Though he enjoyed them immensely, he no longer has these toy balls, given the potential harm they posed when he would chew off the protruding spikes.
------------------------------------------------------
At 3:34 --
Since Harvey uses our heads so much--as a perch, landing pad, playground, etc.--we refrain from personal grooming products that would harm him. On that note, other commonly used products can pose a great-even fatal-risk to your bird:
perfumes,
cigarettes and pipes and vaping,
aerosol products,
many household cleaners and disinfectants,
new carpeting (formaldehyde),
paint and varnish,
chocolate and caffeine and onions and other foods,
gas (natural gas, carbon monoxide, kerosene heaters, etc),
scented candles and air-fresheners,
fireplace smoke,
items with non-stick coating (PTFE) - this includes, but isn’t limited to: pots, pans, hair dryers, self-cleaning ovens, grills, waffle irons, indoor grills, space heaters, and more.

If you say “hey is that your boy” he starts like shaking and wagging his tail. You say “hey go get you boy” he flies with him everywhere. I love green cheeks. They have so much personality. Harvey reminds me of my green cheek Monkey. He was swinging upside down from a rope in his cage the day I walked into Petco. The store named him Gus Gus. I got him home and said his name is Monkey. He's a very funny bird and I could watch him play all day and never get bored.

This has been the most heartwarming thing I've watched in a long time. Guess my feathery chainsaw is the exception in conure behaviour. She is funny but man she can bite. (And she screams a good bit too even though we are home all the time) I do wish I could find ways to encourage her to play more like what your bird does.

What a little dear. I have a cinnamon greencheek that I’ve had for about 2 years now and no one could tell me if he was male or female but I’ve decided on male because he acts like one and has never laid an egg. Also, I heard that banding on the right leg means male, left leg for female. I clip his wings because I have 3 ceiling fans and they are always going. I take him outside in a harness. He loves that.
@ExtantChronicles
@ExtantChronicles 3 жыл бұрын
I've not heard that about the banding on a particular leg, to identify male or female; that's interesting! We've never had Harvey officially tested, i.e., sending a feather off for genetic confirmation, but like you, he really seems to exhibit little boy energy. Hahaha! It wouldn't matter to us, of course. I imagine your little one does enjoy the sunshine with you, on his harness. That's something Harvey still vehemently resists...lol. I completely understand the need, too, for some folks tenderly clipping some of the flight feathers, either due to ceiling fans, healing from medical procedures, multiple glass barriers in a home, etc... Your little one sounds loved and well. Thanks for visiting my channel and for sharing.

Hey I have an important question. We are about to move to a new very modern home and I was thinking about my bird that we cannot have poops on our new furniture or new floor. I thought that he can go outside on a harness but it's only like 5-10 mins that we do it and he does not like more than that. I can't let him be is his cage forever it's so sad and he'll be super noisy too and he needs freedom I can't find an idea and even if we clean his poop, my parents will be super mad and that is really not ok. Please I need a solution quickly! He is a poor little bird. 1 more question can you pls give me a minimum time my bird needs to go out of the cage everyday, even if it's not important I need to focus on getting him out as much as possible. Please I need answer it's essential
@ExtantChronicles
@ExtantChronicles 3 жыл бұрын
Dear Jason Khalil, Congratulations on your new home. As I've said before, I'm no expert, but I do know communication is important, especially in a family. Maybe you could sit down with your parents and discuss with them your concerns, both for their happiness and for your bird's well-being? Expressing to them that you want to be a good responsible bird owner, while being respectful of the new home could be a good conversation. With time and patience, the whole family could bond with the feathered member. But mainly, you could all find a solution, together, that works for the whole family, including the members that have feathers. I'd try talking to them about it, first. I'm afraid having birds is a messy business; there will always be something to clean up. At my home, we put towels over the the backs of furniture that can't be easily cleaned-- those towels are regularly washed--and we are used to daily vacuuming and frequent mopping. We also have found untreated natural grass mats that we put over the backs of the furniture, over the towels, that our birds know are approved for chewing and destroying. (You can see it, here, in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jdB4atuD3N2wmKM.html ) If your parents prefer not to do something like this, then some bird owners have entire rooms dedicated to their parrots, so they're not in a cage all day but have freedom in a designated room to be...well...birds, and do what they do, like make messes. (There are videos on KZfaq showing all kinds of bird rooms.) If you are fortunate enough to have such a space for the little guy, that your parents approve of, that could be an option, however, it should only be for temporary spans of time. Our birds bond with us, so being away from us causes a great deal of stress and even trauma which can lead to feather plucking and uncontrollable screaming and other unhealthy coping behaviors. They live a long time, so their family is very important to them. So, I can't recommend to you a "minimum time" your little guy should be out free from his cage because I'll always, personally, recommend they should only be confined when absolutely necessary. I'm not criticizing or judging folks who have to put their birds in a cage for safety while they're at work or school, I'm just saying I'm not comfortable recommending a minimum time to be out of a cage. If you have to put your little guy in a cage, for when you're away, it's really important to know that the biggest one you can afford is better. I don't say this so lightly or easily. I know they are expensive but I, myself, wouldn't want to be stuck in a small cage, would you? As for the harness: Harvey and Betty (new bird in the family) enjoy taking walks in their backpack but they're in it only for the duration of the walk. I've never been successful at getting a harness on any of them, after a loooong time of trying. I don't force them. If the harness stresses your little guy out, I wouldn't force it or he may come to always be afraid of it. You could try to leave it out near where it's visible and he can see it, getting more used to it, and then move it closer to his favorite perch, and maybe seeing it draped over your shoulder so he can see it isn't a dangerous thing. Birds, like us, need to acclimate to things, to get used to things, before we shove new things onto them. On that note, moving into a new house might be a scary thing for your little guy, so try to be patient with him as he gets used to the new smells, sounds, and surroundings. Show him where his cage is and his food and toys. Have a good covering for his cage to help him rest at night, fully. Spend quiet, quality time with him as he adjusts. You'll be the only thing he knows. If he understands the change is an "ok thing," then that could help keep manage his stress and any excessive worried/scared screaming. Also, if your parents desire painting the walls of your new house, I highly recommend asking to board your birdie at the vet or parrot sanctuary until ALL paint fumes have cleared. Even a little paint can fatally harm them. I know I'm talking a lot but...I do detect the desperation in your message and I truly feel for your situation. I can guess that you're afraid of having to find another home for the little guy. I'm sorry I can't provide you with an easy perfect solution to help you. I'm afraid there isn't one. Birds are messy and noisy. Even healthy and happy birds will exercise their vocal cords and chewing tendencies. You could discuss the situation with your local avian vet, or visit a local parrot sanctuary; they may have encountered similar situations with other bird parents in your situation and know better ideas than I have; maybe they know other bird parents in your situation with whom you can talk about everything. Ultimately, try honestly and openly talking to your parents about your concerns. Then, ask to find a local avian vet or parrot sanctuary who might have suggestions to help you understand your little guy's needs. And, always remember that your little guy is smart, and can probably tell that your upset. Try to take a breath, relax, and then approach him. You can all help each other settle into your new home, as a family, with a little time and patience and honest talking. Good luck! I'll be cheering for you all!

@@ExtantChronicles thank you so much! My bird (tweety) hates my dad. like when he passes by he becomes puffy and opens the cage door. He hates him now my dad doesn't like that but he loves him(sometimes) Few months ago we sold 2 cocatiels because we knew that this family couldn't take care but tweety hates them he becomes jealous so much. He bit both of them and they are scared. So I think my conure saw my dad scritch rio(1 of my cocatiels). Does this make sense, we tried him giving all the treats and nothing works. We got a special hoodie for him to not get hurt by him but it's not cool to all ways were it.

I have a green cheek that goes on biting fits every now and then. Is that common. We are trying to figure out how to stop them. The only play she seems to like is chewing and biting.

Hello, Tony Linardi. Sometimes, it can be difficult to determine the cause of the aggression. Observing the scene, including your own behavior/activity, can offer clues. Sometimes we can unknowingly incite aggression from them. Sometimes, we seem to do everything right and we still get a bite. Welcome to the world of GCC, where love can sometimes hurt. (lol) But seriously, below, I've listed a few things I've learned: --I've noticed Harvey is particularly more ornery during mating season. At all times, though, I've learned to avoid from particular affections that are only going to frustrate him, thus leading to aggression, e.g., innocent stroking of the back, or petting under the wing, or playing with his tail. I can't send him "mixed signals." --When Harvey is growing a lot of pins, especially the thicker flight and tail feathers, he is a bit more sensitive. While handling him, preening him, or giving him scratches, he'll react if I accidentally press against one in the wrong way; they can be really painful if they're moved inappropriately. Any unknown injury, also, could cause sensitivity and certain warnings. --Also, I've recognized, that like us, he can just have "off days" where he's just kinda moody--whether he didn't get enough sleep*, or he's mad about the neighbor using a power tool, or I won't let him play with something he's deemed his, or if I've been away too long, or I've neglected his "routine" in some way, etc... In the beginning, during such times, I would use one of his portable perches to engage him, rather than offer a finger. Since then, I've only had to use this method on very rare occasions. --A good diet is essential for their balance, just like us. Remember that appropriate fresh fruits and veggies are critical for their well-being. This is a very over-looked factor. --I've learned to consider Harvey as I would any relationship in my life. Like people, our relationship and trust bond requires consistent attention with them. Deviation from that can spur uncertainty about us, in his mind, and he may respond accordingly. Also, they are not solitary creatures, at all, and will absolutely act out and breakdown if they're left alone for too long or are ignored. They are absolute social creatures. (I'm not implying you do this, I'm just including it in my list, here.) --Sometimes, they can be simply bored, and just become frustrated in general. To satisfy their natural traits, they must have things they're allowed to destroy: toys, suitable leaves and woods, safe paper and cardboard, etc. I try to make sure Harvey is physically, mentally, and emotionally engaged and enriched, i.e., making sure he has appropriate toys, window-viewing and sun-bathing perches, training, one-on-one time/cuddles, room to fly around, inclusion, etc. --It's important to remember, too, that they use their beaks for probing, stabilizing, moving, playing, etc. Harvey will use his beak when reaching for my finger, not to bite, but to stabilize the transfer. He'll also use his beak to give me "kisses," but upon initiation it could be misinterpreted as a would-be biting opportunity. He'll use his beak, too, when we're playing together, especially with his ball; it's just playing, though. I have learned to use his "that escalated quickly" mode, to avoid "going there." Using a portable perch or dowel will help you determine and better understand these gestures and motions, until a pattern of trust is mutually established. Basically, give them a proper diet, promote physical exercise, ensure quality sleep, be aware of their mating cues, teach them what's acceptable and what's not acceptable behavior, earn their trust, understand they're like us with "moods," enrich their lives mentally and emotionally. Even with all of this, I still get a random bite from Harvey. It's a venture in patience, empathy, and responsibility but it's SO worth it. Harvey is a little treasure in my life. I wish you well as you move forward with your little one. *For sleeping: make sure your little one has a dark, quiet place that is her own. They require a lot of sleep and if it's denied, they will absolutely become moody. _________________ Note: I'm NO expert, on anything; I'm simply sharing what I've learned. I've had my GCC for 3 years and he barely ever plays with his toys? He is totally spoiled and has a ton of different kinds but he would rather just sit and watch me. He's also scared of them half the time. Any advice to get him to be more active with his toys?

Hello, Amna! Birds are like us; they have their own preferences and quirks. There may not be anything that's piqued his fancy, yet. A general understanding with GCCs are they love to climb and chew, so toys that encourage that are great! If your little guy seems truly lethargic, though, I'd be sure to get him checked out by an avian vet. Be sure, too, he's getting enough undisturbed sleep during the night--they need about 10 hours, as I understand it. His diet, too, should include healthy pellets--like Harrison's-- and appropriate fresh fruits and veggies (be sure they're save, e.g., no avocado) so he has the energy to play. I wish you well! Thanks for visiting our channel.

😕 I got my conure with 1 and a half years old, and he hasn’t been tamed. He hates when anyone gets close to him, doesn’t dance nor play around... Doesn’t step up, just doesn’t get near anyone... only time he speaks is when he gets scared I guess and screams 😞 I’ve been trying to give it love but nothing has changed. I’ve had him for two weeks.

I'm sorry, Vane G. They can take a long time to rehabilitate from a former living condition or sometimes it can take a while to just acclimate to a new one. If you have a bird sanctuary near you, they might be able to help you determine the best approach to forming a bond. I'd also be sure to visit your local avian vet to make sure your little guy doesn't have an illness, parasite, condition, nourishment issue, etc. There can be something psychological/behavioral or physiological going on. Don't give up on your little one, yet. They are a lot like us, needing patience and proper care for a healthy and enriching life. I hope things go well for you both. Additional: This KZfaq channel might be helpful, too (I've shared her vids on conures, specifically): kzfaq.infosearch?query=conure

I am neither an avian vet nor an expert but it could be stress bars or just regular wear-and-tear from being handled. Harvey LOVES to be held in a way that puts contact on his wings' shoulder areas; he's been known to have darkened feathers there, too. However, they've not torn, so....I'd be sure to locate a good avian vet near you to investigate. I wish you well. Thank you for visiting our channel.

I am interested in getting one but I am still in the stage of research and wonder if a Green Cheeked Conure fits my lifestyle. I work from 9-6pm daily and I dun go out after work and just head straight home maybe except on the weekends. is there a way for me to put in some time after work to bond with them? I also heard about Green Cheeked Conures grabbing food and flinging it all over the place, is there any tips on how to deal with that? Other birds I may have interest in are: Lovebirds Cockatiels

. Hello there. I'm no expert but I do know that these little guys require a lot of time and presence from their humans--even when they're sleeping during their 10-12 hours each day, they like to know someone is there. I do know of plenty of folks who have very busy schedules and still manage to build a healthy relationship and fulfilling life for their birds; this includes going home for lunch breaks, taking them along on vacation, including them on errands, etc. If you have a parrot/bird sanctuary or rescue near you, I would visit it and speak with the operators. Just be honest with them. Maybe you could start off by volunteering a few hours a week there to gauge if it's feasible for you? This way, you wouldn't invest in a little one only to tragically determine it's just not a good fit for your schedule. The fact that you're sensitive to the situation says much about your character, in a good way, showing you already care about their well-being. As for the food flinging...well...that's just part of the hazards to having these delightful little goofballs in your life. It's not so much as willful "flinging" of the food as it is insisting on crumbling their food into a million pieces in nearly every corner of the room or shaking their beaks to rid them of any fruit and veggie leftovers. I've found, personally, that Harvey has a few favorite spots to eat--though he's always ready and willing to test a new area--so I prepare the area. He prefers to eat from higher vantage points so I provide him free-standing perches or keep towels over the backs of his favorite couch spots. It's an adjustment on my part but it's an easy compromise to indulge is natural instincts and well-being. I hope this helps.

@@ExtantChronicles hi there. Thank you for your reply even though it was such an old video. I'm actually an owner of a green cheeked conure already (rehomed to me) and your advice will be plenty helpful in my journey with it. I will be sure to take note of all the pointers you said when taking care of this little guy. It's still not super bonded to me but these birds can live for 20 years, I'm just gonna take my time.
