Great video! My first eco Drive is a 2000 Titanium WR200. That is 22 years old and never missed a beat. It's in for its first service at the moment. I have dived that watch all around the South Pacific to as deep as 75 metres. I plan on still using it once it comes back from the watch chop. The second watch I bought was in 2004 a titanium eco drive dive watch WR300M. A great big but very light watch, but it flooded on me 10 years ago while diving in PNG. Since repaired it and I still use it occasionally. Back in 2015, Citizen had a huge discount deal on new watches for existing Citizen owners, so I bought a steel version of the Titanium military style watch WR200 which I just use until my Titanium comes back. it's my backup. The weak point is the straps and pins. Split straps, i.e. a left and right strap held in by pins can cause you to lose your watch if you catch as you're moving through close country. So it's essential you get rid of it and buy the endless straps that means if one pin goes south, the straps will hold the watch onto your wrist with the other pin. I think they are called NATO" or "zulu" straps.

Don't know if anyone mentions this but the best thing to have when homeless is a cheap robust watch. Phone batterys die, require charging very often and can't get wet. A watch can tell you the time and date needed for homeless shelters, food banks etc. Very underrated piece of kit, you don't know what you need until you lose it.

I use a Casio G-Shock here at home and around town, it has digital and analog features. If I'm going "out" I have a waterproof (300meters) self winding dive watch, made by INVICTA. I also have a eco-drive my wife gave me decades ago, one battery swap in all those years and service at the same time.

I own the Casio Pro Trek Tough Solar digital watch. It has the altimeter, barometer & compass built in. I do not live on or near any mountains, so the altimeter doesn't get much use. I still find the barometer useful as it can be used to predict changes in weather and of course, a compass can always come in handy. The fact that it is also waterproof and can go 6 months without seeing the sun, while still working properly, is a big bonus too. I can see what you mean about screen size and glasses, but I am at an age where I need reading glasses to see my cell phone screen as well so putting them on has become second nature, I always have a pair in my pocket or pack anyway. Thanks for sharing.

I also have a Casio ProTrek but the PRW-1500, there are several additional functions but I tend to stick to the ones you've mentioned as well. I've had it since I left the Army (in '93) when I treated myself to this watch. Only thing that I have had to change is the watch strap and I modded that myself from a paracord bracelet and a double layer of paracord for the strap. Atb Malcolm 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

The coments concerning automatic watches reminded me that i inherited one from my Dad. I went and got it out of the door it was living in. Gave it a couple of shakes noticed it needed a mew band, the reason i put it up actually. Got a band and put on my pocket as I did a chore It has kept good time so far Will ware it until morning Set aside, it is over40 year old timec water resistant. I think when the time comes it will go to my grand son I will.lok for the US brand you mentioned Love your Chanel

Went with a timex expedition year's ago and never looked back. i also have a seiko self winding one,, but the timex expedition is my "go to" for the lighted dial,, and the seiko i like because it doesn't need batteries

Great video as always. One good thing about mechanical watches is they can be worn outside your clothing in extreme cold and keep working. Saves having to remove or peel back mittens or parka sleeve. With battery powered watches some have vibration alarms which is good if worn under a heavy parka, sleeping bag or in a noisy environment or somewhere you want to be quiet. If using a watch with audible alarm and you want to hear it to wake up up (sleeping bags are good at absorbing sound) you can put the watch inside your toque so it is close to your ear.

I got a solar Citizen BM8180 field watch to use as my outdoor watch and I just love it, it's one of my most worn watches period. Clean, beautiful black dial, day/date function, blue lume, 100m water resistance, 37mm case is perfect for my wrist and the CNS paratrooper strap I got for it is comfortable, elastic and badass. Highly recommended!

I have the Titanium and steel versions of this watch bought back in 200 and 2015 respectively. Both are WR200 and I have taken the Titanium to 75 metres on several occasions, A damn good watch. I'd love to get a decent strap for both of them - would you mind sharing where you got the CNS straps from? I see CNS website is sill to open.

I used to be into G-shocks until I learned about eco drives. much better watches . at least the build seems more grown up , with sapphire and stainless steel vs plastic . it is a watch you dont have to be embarassed of wearing and packed with features.

I totally agree with you on your choice of watches. I had a citizen eco drive for 20 years which i bought in 1999. I still have a stainless steel casio tough solar which i bought in 2001 for £100 and i have the same casio tough solar as you which i got for Xmas in 2020 for £35 from Argos. I wouldn't have a watch that needs winding up or needs replacement batteries because you never know when they need replacing. They could fail when you need them most, whereas the solar ones you can just wear them with confidence

My personal experience shows the eco-drives will last 20 years at least before needing a service. Mine did 22 years and is in the shop lastw eek. That si the longest by far I have ever owned a watch,

Hi. I love a good watch. Got a few nice automatics, great watches as long as you keep moving,of course, but my go to ‘camping/outdoor’ watch,is my 1990’s Animal W001 Solstice quartz. It’s only had 4 or 5 batteries and probably half a dozen different straps. Used it for Mountain biking, swimming, surfing. It’s never leaked, lost time, etc. Guess I’ve been using it for 30 years now? Value for money. Stay well,Neil.

You should be able to fix that sweep hand issue on your Citizen yourself. There is a built in mode for re-zeroing the hands. Just google something like "recalibrate citizen chronograph". It is a common problem. I fixed mine that way. That Praesidus is a lovely field watch. I do love the aesthetics of a mechanical watch, but they always seem so expensive and high maintenance to me. Mostly I am a G-Shock obsessive nowadays, but I have a soft spot for all casios.

Wenger watches are great, although the seem to be getting stocked less and less in the UK. They are not at all expensive, are made in Switzerland, rugged and waterproof, and I like the fact that they are made by Wenger, who used to make Swiss Army knives until Victorinox bought out their knife factory. The budget Victorinox watch.

Glad you mentioned nite watched yes they maybe more expensive but found them to be bomb proof, I've owned 2 over the last 10 years both are still going strong have replaced the straps once and the batteries once in that time. Neil I own a few Luminox and they are super lightweight with fantastic luminosity! And tougher than Chinese algebra Haha! I also own a casio protrek that is very easy to read analog that is solar powered with a compass and all the bells and whistles and a push button lighted dial, waterproof and all that but it also has large numerals so it very easy to read at a glance. It's not cheap at about 200.00 dollars Usd but it's well worth the money. The problem I have is deciding which one to wear! If I'm out for a hike I prefer the casio because of the compass but I like it for around town as well. But life's full of decisions. Life is tough! Ha ha! ATB from Vietnam Sam Adler BTW another fine video! Thanks, Neil

Neil, another enjoyable video. And a wrist watch is such a valuable piece of EDC equipment. Just wondering how much alcohol does it take to boil water in your DIY "Vaseline tin" alcohol stove you used with your canteen cup?🖐 It is exactly what I am looking for to use with my canteen cup and stove along with the Nalgene bottle. Thanks

Been wearing watches forever. LOVE my field watches. I have several different watches-bulova, citizen, swiss army, seiko. Currently, my Seiko field watch is my daily driver. Rugged and simple. Mine has the day/date, but I find that largely useless for me. I havent set it forever. I am a big fan of auto winding watches though. PS-where did you get that alcohol stove? I love that thing!!

This fashion for oversized watches, beloved by the young bucks of today make me laugh. The implication being, the bigger the watch, the more expensive! The holy grail of watches has always been to make them smaller, the art, to miniaturise the workings into as low as profile watch face as possible, the total opposite of what they are trying to suggest with these Humvee sized watches they love to show off!🤣😂🤷‍♂️😩🥺
