Updates: Now you can use Amex, Mastercard, or Visa in lieu of Opal Cards for trains, light rails, and ferries. Yet, the benefits are quite limited so at the moment Opal is still the best option for public transport use. Ref: transportnsw.info/tickets-opal/opal/contactless-payments
