For my channel members - an extended version of this interview here: • For Channel Members: U...
Leah Forster spent many years delighting Orthodox female audiences with her comedy. It is hard to overstate her success: she produced CDs, musicals, a ton of live acts, and was a household name among all Hasidic women. She was not only very funny and booked for major women's events, she was also an English teacher in Bais Yaakov for ears. In the last few years, Leah has been on a different path, as she was outed as gay and her place in the community fell apart. In this video, I ask her about her experience as a comedienne, and we talk about the many audiences that she has made laugh.
0:00 An overview of Leah's Hasidic and post-Hasidic comedy
4:58 How did you become a comedian?
11:36 Where did you grow up?
18:15 What was your comedy like for Orthodox women?
20:45 Why is it so hard to find your old comedy online?
27:44 Can you give examples of jokes you'd make when performing for frum audiences?
37:05 Are orthodox people offended by your imitations of Orthodox characters?

Most frum people laugh along with Leah Forster because she gets the nuances. Contrary to what everyone thinks the frum community is quite aware of our own issues and if you read our publications you can see the discussions that surround it.

Very interesting thumbs up. Watching now from Manhattan. I am Jewish (not Orthodox) and I would enjoy her comedy. Watching part she left wow. I am sorry she has had struggles. To those people who were unkind to her they are not following Torah guidelines to be kind. It really bothers me that some so called "religious" people are unkind. I have heard this talked about by Modern Orthodox rabbis to be kind.

Thank you both for sharing so much of yourselves in this video. I’m on what you might call the “opposite” journey of becoming increasingly frum, from a progressive and secular background. Many of those “progressive” values are still sacred to me, and I see them as vital parts of living my own Jewish mission. Navigating so many competing interests and facing personal sacrifice for the privilege of living the life that feels right for you…those seem like common themes in our experiences. Sending so much love and admiration for the ways both of your stories embody the beauty of klal Yisrael and help so many of us to feel seen and understood. It takes all kinds, as they say, so let’s start focusing on our shared journeys and traditions and stop segregating ourselves by sect. Let’s make room for that abundance!!! (Taking that one with me too!!) Thank you Leah for the uplifting comedy so especially needed at this hard moment. Am Yisrael Chai ❤

Amazing woman! I think humour is so valuable as an observation of society. Women offer a unique view of life. We are so often reluctant to be funny - it not ladylike- but it is sometimes a vehicle to address issues which might be difficult. Wish this lady lived next door to me. She could do my cleaning and I could bake Kugel. X

Absolutely loved listening to both of your comments. Two smart, funny Jewish women. It's truly a delight. For Leah regarding how she described her brand as "relatable comedy" and what that means... Leah, there is an expression found in the Torah generally and in Chassidus more specifically and especially in Chabad Chassidus quoting the Alter Rebbe, the first Lubavitcher Rebbe from the Tanya, "כל חד וחד לפום שיעורא דיליה כו׳". Meaning how everyone is capable of relating to and revealing G-d's absolute truth and kindness in the world...each and every individual, according to how G-d has created them in a custom-tailored fashion. Each individual is different and all are unique in what and how they perceive; and together with that all are essential to G-d's plan for Creation. Only blessings for good to you both, and please continue to serve G-d with joy and spread the light!

Leah, the beauty of your comedy (from what I saw) is every woman across the board can relate to you. Personally, I think there were comedians in the exodus out of Egypt. I can mentally come up with some funny stuff and I am not Jewish. Christians have the same Old Testament. I am still not sure if Moses looked like Charlton Heston or not.

Then don’t live that “lifestyle,” but stop trying to tell others how they should live or who they should be. You can’t ask someone to change how God made them. Imagine if someone told you to stop being heterosexual. Sounds insane, right?
