Angela's son Theo passed away when he was 3-months old. The hospital provided plaster casts of his hand and foot. I used ‪@polycam6558‬ to scan the casts, sent the scan and photos to ‪@PrintedObsession‬ to produce 3d models, and printed them on the ‪@Nexa3D‬ XiP 3d printer.

As a father-to-be many times without any successful outcomes (effectively 10 miscarriages between my current wife and ex-girlfriend from HS), wanting nothing more than to be a dad, it's a pain like any other. One of the things that sucks too with pregnancy loss is many fathers don't get the help they need or even acknowledged regarding their loss. I struggled with my grief for a long time. I'm much better now about it, but man it messed me up for years.

@@KensCounselingCouch I'm really sorry to ear that. I wish all the best in the world and hope that, some day, you'll get to be a father. For what I've read I think you will be a great dad.

Joel puts the "Telling" in Storytelling once again. 😭 It is rare to have online content affect us in such an emotional way in this day and age but this really got me. Seriously, Storytelling at its finest. Thank you for sharing this amazing application of 3D Printing with us and thank you for continually modeling love and positivity in this community. 3D Printing for causes like this is just some of the most amazing and memorable applications there are. Tremendous project Joel. We have worked on things like this in the past and they are ALWAYS hard, but it is 100% worth the effort, heartache, and more when you see the reaction from the recipient. 3DPN Team, great editing, composure, and flow, this video was amazingly well put together. This is what I want to see more of with 3D printing. On paper, it's simple. Scan the object, modify it better for printing, add a name, use a softer filament/ resin when printing. The impact of it is SOOOOOOOOOO much more than the normal benchy, fox, or replica of a model from a movie. Thanks Joel

Although my limited experience making castings suggests that it might be fine to use a casting silicone, going with a 3D scanner and then printing the casts was much safer since the plaster of Paris likely didn't have any reinforcement. When I made a latex mask (Hakuowlo's mask), a crucial step was adding burlap fiber to the plaster to give it structure. The mold was like a fragile version of fiberglass, even with the reinforcement it still has a tendency to crack and crumble over time. Also, had Angela gone down the casting route there was a risk of damaging the casts because you'd need to apply a release agent (oil, Vaseline, that sort of thing). Joel, you've not only avoided damaging the original casts, you've given this grieving family a lasting memory, and you've shown the community a fantastic use for these technologies.

As a father who in 1996 was presented with a Polaroid of my newborn daughter by a loving NICU who thought it might be the only trace of my now 27 year old daughter this is a great story and honestly something I am thinking how a can create locally for people who have lost a love one. I agree, it sucks seeing people do that, but I think Joel here had pure motives. The video didn't appear pushy, and I even felt when he moved the boxes out of the way of the camera, he was trying to be genuine and was trying to not focus so much on getting the film, but letting that mother process the mold recreations. I think the video was great to show how it was done so other people could create something similar for themselves or for others in their community.
